Signed up on the monthly option, however after 1 month I'll probably want to pay up-front for a year by site transfer. Is it just a case of cancelling and opening a new account?

Yeah, that's the easiest way to work it right now. We're going to try to improve this process in the future, but for now just "cancel payments" and then make a site transfer for the 1yr amount.
