Hey Entity,
Here is most of the traceroutes for the US downloads. The Latency appears to be quiet high. What do I need to change to get the EU mirror?
Transfer speed of the Bins were 2-6KBs for the US site and 180+ for the EU

Sorry for the long delay -- we're still working on doing this as it requires a pretty significant rewrite to our backend to do it well. When it happens, it will be automatic, but I need to track down customers from AUS (thanks to you we should be set with that), NZ, and hopefully Africa, China, and Japan. I really need to see where speeds are best based on the country so that we can automate which country hits which server.
So yeah -- bumping this for the time being.
ANY NON-US CUSTOMERS: please run this test.
From your commandline (linux, Mac users only or PC users who have installed cURL), issue the following command:
curl http://testmeplease-us.s3.amazonaws.com/10mb.bin > /dev/null
Then, for comparison:
curl http://testmeplease-eu.s3.amazonaws.com/10mb.bin > /dev/null
If you don't have CURL, you can emulate this just by loading those files in your browser and telling me what the download speeds are of those files based on the two connections.
Please report your country, and the speed that you got on both of the downloads. This will help us make your experience at DeucesCracked the best one possible.
thanks again,
Rob

I haven't been downloading as much during the day lately mainly because I've caught up with the majority of the shows. I'll try running some tests next week to see what the speeds are like at different times of the day.

Entity,
Looks like the issue I was having with speeds dropping off at certain points of the day has been fixed. I've been downloading the test file at different times of the day for a week now and haven't seen any drop in speed. It must have been a been a problem with one of the routes to the US during that period.
Cheers for the help

Australia
US server seems much faster, average probably around 120 which is standard, spiking up to 200.
EU was in 60 - 100 range.
Australia proves to be a very very difficult continent to provide solutions for. We're still working toward better solutions for non-US downloads but with a lot of site developments that we're undergoing, it's not the #1 priority we have right now. Please keep updating this as you find more info though as I'm keeping all of the info onhand.

The streams are always almost instantaneous for me (I'm in Ireland). I let vids buffer for 30 seconds or so, then press play and it plays right through no problem. It's really impressive as I seem to remember CR streams being very unreliable.
Haven't done much downloading because the streams are so handy.

Sup!
This comes from Finland too, I'm behind 20Mbps connection, and downloading a video ATM at 25-50Kb/s speed. Has been like this for a while, i remember when the site got launched w/ some invite tickets etc, it was close to 300kb/s or so, but obviously the userbase has been growing ridiculously since then.
Takes 1,5-2hours now to dl a 60min vid.

Our userbase really won't affect our download speeds at all as our downloadable files aren't hosted on our own server/network/computers -- they're hosted by Amazon.com (their scalable download service, S3). While capacity isn't going to be an issue for that, we are still working on getting EU mirrors up because latency and downloads from some European countries is worse than others.
Amazon has been beta-testing some software upgrades to their backend which, when they are out of beta, we'll incorporate into our site to give you guys a European source for all videos. Unfortunately I don't have any sort of ETA on this as it's dependent on Amazon and their platform upgrades, but they work on a pretty insanely fast schedule for such a large operation so I'm hopeful that we'll see a EU-specific download site over the summer. I will update this as soon as I have updates from them.
The short answer, though, is yes -- by all means use a download manager (I use DownThemAll in Firefox). There are some nifty tricks that Amazon uses to get faster speeds to EU customers, and these are seen best when people have their local connections/software optimized, which most download managers seem to do a good job of.

I have been running a few tests on this since at this exact moment my speeds are a bit pants. Although I find that the vast majority of the time the vids fly in.
So, I decided to test to see if downloading multiple videos made any difference. The result was it made no difference to the "individual" files downloading speed. Which obviously makes me think it is something that amazon is doing to cap the individual file speed.
Anyway.
What this means is you can download the file and at the same time watch it via the stream if your speeds are poor.
Obviously you will want to buffer the stream. The way to do this is to start the video and then hit pause. Wait until about 25% has buffered which might take 10 or 15 mins if your speeds are very slow. Then it should play for a good while. In the meantime your file will carry on downloading at the same speed as it was already doing. If you catch up with the buffer and your file has not finished downloading you can always hit the pause and let it buffer up some more.
There is no need for someone to wait for the whole file to download before watching if you do it this way.
