Size, colour and location of tarp would be useful.

All I know right now is that they were quietly minding their own business, someone snuck up behind them, and sprung the tarp.

Honestly the word "tarp" makes it more believable, not less. If PH had said they had been arrested, I might be skeptical. But tarps, man. Those things are tricky.
