SB in the hand is a regular, seems ok/good, has a relatively wide 3-betting range in this spot preflop. BB is a loose passive, runs around 35/5 pre I think, under plays hands like top pair postflop.
At the time, I felt like I didn't have any immediate fold equity on the flop and there were a lot of turns that would significantly change my equity in the hand, so I decided to just call the flop in position and see how the turn plays out. Is there any merit to this kind of play here? Afterwards, I thought it was still probably better to just raise the flop with hopes of folding out K or Q hi on the turn.

I would just go ahead and raise the flop. Like you said, there are a lot of turn cards that will change things and make us not want to raise any more, so I don't mind taking my value now. If a turn ace comes we will be able to get lots of bets in, since our hand looks like 8x. Our raise will also probably force SB to clarify his range for us - 3betting overpairs and calling most else. The pot is very big and I agree with you that getting six outers to fold at some point is a win.

Given reads, as played, isn't there merit to folding the turn for two more?
Possibly, but I had a read SB was capable of making some aggressive plays with draws &/or very marginal hands, so basically a very polarized range when he reraises, but not just monsters. Given the read, i debated between all 3 options on the turn, but decided on calling.

I fistpump 3bet the turn as played and check the river unless you improve or bet depending on the timing/soulreads.
My play would be to always cap pre here. BB coldcalling is always frustrating because if SB 3bets fairly wide, BB is going to stick around and start flop semi-bluffing with PP and draws.
This is avoided by capping pre AND you get the added bonus of folding out low PP if the flop/turn come scary.
