I certainly understand why people would suggest this, but it isn't technically feasible for us to produce videos like this (I tried a run of this when we first launched DeucesCracked, and we quickly realized that it simply wouldn't work at our organization's scale). If you have a large amount of concern about this, I'd strongly suggest you to urge poker sites to allow people to change names or participate in anonymized tables.

thanks rob!
i agree that this would be a noble effort and am happy dc put so much effort into investigating it. i also agree that the best all around fix to neutering PTR is to end permanent screen names.

For the "technical" issues with the vid's, one thing that crossed my mind would be to have the coaches move their HUD's to cover up the player's screen name. Similar to what someone would do for "tilt-blocking" their own chip stack. Obv's that is more applicable in LHE, and you couldn't cover up the other player's chip stack for you NL guys, but nonetheless it kind of removes the player names. As for chat boxes, if someone is that dedicated to looking for a players name in a vid, then hats off to them.
Then the only problem would then deal with the "communication" issue and how coaches would direct the players attention. Maybe highlight the mouse and just have the coach point out who they are talking about?
Oh, and I agree changing your screen name would work best.

this is definitely a good idea
we could have a video hud setting that would do that. thanks for the idea!

Figures an ACC grad couldn't think if this sooner.
I'm kidding. I just don't have any GaTech grads to make fun of anymore.

Actually I was thinking about the HUD covering the name also. On my tables that is exactly how I have my HUD placed normally. There would still remain the problem of adding some other sort of name for player identification purposes though. As far as the chatbox goes, in mini mode the chatbox at Merge is closed (and there are no player icons).
I have to say though that I'm finding it a little hard to believe that there isn't any video software out there that can't easily overlay text with a solid background onto video.

I know people don't generally watch videos strictly for entertainment, but blocking the player's names and referring to them by seat position would make it pretty dry to watch, imo
Yeah but hiding the screen names would make it soo much easier for Danzasmack!!

then where do you get the 5% 3bet % from? he never even mentioned getting 3bet
Hmm maybe I did misread as it looked like he said that. Anyway, it's just a minor detail and not really relevant to the content of my post. All of my points are still valid.

This thread has become a fascinating read. I will add that I have seen vids where coaches took the time to blur out their own name, so obviously with a little work it could be done. Having said that there are still plenty of fish out there and I don't really think it's necessary to take the time to seek out one particular player seen in a video. If they are that bad there's a decent chance they are bus to anyway. Still great thread though.

I have sooooooo much to learn. I feel so small right now
As for PTR, I think it's over-rated, but there is one feature they have that I hesitate to mention because you can go in and look at how someone constructs their ranges (though it will give you looks that aren't in context) - and I have used this, though I think it's been a waste of my time to do it.
The biggest problem of PTR isn't PTR but the idiots that use it and berating players with their negative win rates... these guys are NOT winning players. What winning player would ever berate a losing player? Do they not know where the money comes from? These are our customers!

Some people are just assholes. It has nothing to do with winning or losing.
