Hi I’m Spencer or mrhobbeys on here and a couple of other places,
Fast & Dirty:

Using a $50 deposit, try to play and run well enough to turn that into a bankroll and get 50k hands in for the month of April. Starting at 4NL, I will be working my way up the maximum level I can achieve, all the while finding and fixing leaks, and most importantly making myself go “back to basics.”
Basically I have effectively been putting this off for about 2 weeks now, to avoid putting this off into perpetuity I am going to just start by altering the goals and end date.

Today – 300 hands and little jump start
Wed. – 1.2k hands
Thurs. – 2k hands
Fri. – 500 hands
Sat. – UN
Sun. – 500 hands

Few details and info about why:

Week 1 projected total 4500 hands Based on 3 tabling at ~200 hands/hr estimate. Part of this project I will be starting with 1 table and adding them slowly, working up to 3 at a minimum as I am confident I am not making major mistakes I will be increasing the number of tables. The hard part for me will actually be to keep playing an ABC style of play when playing so few tables because since around June of 2010 I have been playing 2NL 5NL and 10NL 6max and HU(via starting tables) with the express purpose of developing better hand reading and trying to push looseness and aggression to the limits. I only got about 20k hands in total mostly losing but I think I at the end just before things got shut down I was really starting to put it all together. The problem is now I see spots all the time where I want so badly to work at getting a guys stack before he is gone, or take a thin thin edge vs a player that I saw do something 1 time, that I start to make big mistakes especially involving my position and the number of players in the hand, this becomes a major problem when playing Full Ring which I am doing now. So a big part of this is getting in the volume playing correctly, in a way reset.

I will make daily updates after I play linking to any hands I post and give a general description of other things mostly poker related. I think it best to point out now that I tilt and sometimes I mega tilt for an entire day like a few weeks ago I woke up hating the world I don’t know why I played that day but I lost $510 (almost 2 buyins) and that is really bad because I can’t afford to lose that much in 1 sitting right now.

I also want to point out that because I do not have a bankroll at all for any of the games I am playing winning is extremely important to me right now, I think this makes this experiment that much more interesting because winning a few hundred dollars to put just toward poker will mean a lot to me, and I know this has a negative effect on my play.

More about me:

I am a sometimes pro and sometimes semipro poker player (but as of now less pro Wink), and as a friend put it to me recently I have, “tried just about every way to make money except get a job”, before I found poker I tried to start a couple of businesses, sold on eBay for a couple of years, and for the most part (although I hate to admit this) I really have tried not to get a “normal” job.
So now I found myself in an interesting situation since April 15, 2011 I was trying to play live poker, and where I had a winning record in all previous 2 years and for the start of 2011, I started losing (I know myself and I know this is because I am thinking about how important the money is to me, so I am trying to get over that by winning a bank roll online). It took only about 2-1/2 maybe 3 months for my money to run out and I had to make some changes. I now live behind my parent’s house in an RV I purchased, and I have a really great setup to try and accomplish something good. Basically I help my dad at his business and I get to stay here without rent covering only the cost of the resources I use. This gives me a lot of free time and keeps my costs of living to a bare minimum. I also have started a business that I would like to see succeed, and have another job that is part time when they need another worker and this is the main reason for the title. This should be interesting to see if I am able to make the changes needed to actually get some decent volume in.

I welcome any advice, or questions.

Looks awesome man, best of luck to you.

It would be cool if you could put in here what the general tendencies are at each stakes, and how they change as you are moving up..

You sound like me in the regards to not wanting to ever get a "real" job lol. I hope this works out for you. Stick to the goals that you set and you should do well imo.

Well I have had a good start when I went to open my poker client I had a surprise $5, I decided to play on it and just deposit tomorrow or tonight if I absolutely had to Poke Tongue

This is the results mostly from HU because I couldn't get seated.

2 tables HU 2.5hrs
272.55 bb/100
total won $23.33
but only 214 hands

I really cant go any longer and must get to bed. Tonight was not the best example of me sticking to my game plan, playing HU was not something I counted on doing much if at all, I do however like it. And I will not complain about the great results to start with. Next time I will post some bankroll information.

As for hands today there was only 1 I really thought stood out but my computer was on the fritz and had to be shutdown, when it started again I could not find that hand. I also made some questionable call downs vs players that seemed to be overly aggressive. I will try to find an example in the morning before I start again.

Also is there a way to add a picture without having to upload it onto another site first? (it such a sick brag my #1 graph Poke Tongue)

Yesterday was slow going, and full of distractions. For the short times I did get to play I was somewhat unfocused so I decided to get to bed early and get an early morning start. What a ruff start it was. I'll be stopping soon to possibly play a live poker tournament, and then head into work. After losing a little yesterday I am actually still playing on the $5 bonus I had, and have yet to make my $50 deposit Smile I think it will be cool to keep going and try to make something of it especially since I am not going to start out mass multitabling.

This morning I have only gotten in 200 hands at breakeven and well below my ev line, but I will be back for more this evening.

I have run into an interesting problem I am about to go to work but I started looking through my hands for trouble spots and to find a couple that I thought were odd when I played them. The interesting problem has to do with most of these hands being short handed, a friend and I did some variance calculations yesterday and it became clear that I have a higher risk of not making it when playing shorter handed so I am going to make an effort to only get onto tables with 6+ players and leave when they get down below 7 unless the table is extra good. For now I have some hands that can be found here:

I will eventually post some graphs and some of the more interesting points about the variance calculations.

That is the first graph that shows my amazing run good on the first day followed by some run bad then just plan tilt.

I have made some changes to my plan and am no longer just taking the first seat I find. I am instead trying to sit at tables with more players and so far after 7k total hands on this site I have not found anyone that I need to avoid at this level.

Last night I had kind of a break through and realized that I am playing so loose and aggressive because I am simply board of playing ABC poker Frown so basically after pulling out the old hand guides as a reference for the first 30min or so and making myself stick to them I started auto piloting and winning a little, eventually I made a really bad shove because I misread the action in front of me.

So now we are back to square 1 I have lost the $5 and it is time for me to deposit I am still going to be way behind in my hand goals because I am still sticking to 1 table for the time being.

Due to extra work I was unable to play yesterday and today I have made the choice to play live poker, but I wont be gone so long that I wont get any hands in I plan to get a few in before I go and to grind a ton when I return.

:-o

I maybe nuts but I am waiting until after April 15, to deposit my $50.....

That doesn't mean I stop, there are plenty of free rolls and I have several player points that I can use to play on, and I do want to get the maximum amount of play in I can. I also need to rehash my tourney skills so that I can play well in the upcoming freeroll at my casino!

Hello again, although I have taken a break from the brutal micro cash games I have spent some time studying and I have played a few freerolls and have been able to build up from nothing to about $1 so far Poke Tongue I don't plan on taking over the world ... yet. I have through all of this made some interesting conclusions about my play as a whole and have revisited some of my core poker concepts to test their validity as I currently understand them. Because I have found it so interesting, I am going to start a blog Smile basically I have found that writing out what I am thinking really puts my understanding to the test. So I plan to cover a lot and hope that it is not too long and boring. I will post a link after I make my first post which might be a 2 part write-up about some very basic poker bankroll concepts.

I would want to give the full rundown on everything that has happened and how I reached each conclusion, but I think it will be better to lay out what changes I am going to make and get my goals up and posted this way it will be done and if I feel the need I can go back and explain things better and if I do something like that include some sort of warning so readers know what they might be getting into. With that said here are my goals for the rest of April and the first part of May.

Goals Rest of April start of May:

1. Save money and set a budget that allows me to save enough money to sustain me at least 6 months of my current situation income free.
2. Daily regimented study program.
a. Post in the forums
b. Post in a blog daily
3. Play poker every day.
4. Weekly take 1-2 hours to write out a complicated poker concept or theory, and how it might apply
5. Work out or Run/Jog daily
6. Eat Healthy
7. Recognize when I am delaying something out of fear(or whatever) and STOP the delay
8. Sell at least 1 thing a week

Overall Poker Gaols:

1. Make meaningful life changing money
2. Have the freedom to travel
3. Play in the biggest games
4. Have the simple freedom of choice

Planned blog posts (not in this order)

Variance, Standard Deviation, and winrate simulations (and a short about not reading too much into the data given)
