Artificial sweeteners cause an insulin spike similar to sugar. This is bad, and this is why people who use them are no skinnier than those who don't.

If your friend's blood sugar is high, they might consider eliminating grains and legumes from their diet as well. These carbohydrate sources are quickly converted to sugar in the gut and can lead to insulin resistance, which results in high blood sugar.

Replace the lost calories with high quality fats: animal fats, coconut oil, avocado, olive oil.

Sweetners BAD
Honey pretty good
real sugar cane BAD

I would say that equal and sweet n low and the like are the least healthy. Then sugar next due to it's intense support of fungus. I'm sure that people who think Doctors know about health will take issue with this.

This isn't true, but is often quoted as gospel by people. I don't know why it perpetuates as well as it does.

Link discussing these claims: http://www.marksdailyapple.com/artificial-sweeteners-insulin/

FWIW, Mark's Daily Apple is a GREAT resource on nutrition in general. n0whereman is a pretty smart guy too, worth listening to (or reading) on this stuff.

Since I can't play PLO and don't scour the internetz for sweet youtube vids, nutrition and exercise are all I have on DC right now. Frown

Does this make me the equivalent of Joe Tall saying "Watch EPTPE" for anyone talking about tilt?

ETA: also, can we just have a sports/exercise/nutrition/n0whereman forum? It'd make my life a lot easier. Smile

The only people whose advice you should listen to on this subject have a diploma from medical school imo.

i have an excellent report on carbs and fats and general nutrition information.
it talks about how foods are converted to energy fairly indepth.
its a pretty long read but im sure you could get alot of helpful information on sugars (natural and artificial) and other sources of carbs.
only problem is its not on a web page.
i recieved it as a download with a package i bought for a nutrition program. i can send it to you if you like.

TBH I think this would be a fantastic idea and I am fully behind it. We have a ton of threads that come up like this all the time.

Well, someone who went to a school solely dedicated to the human body and spent years and years studying it exclusively MIGHT have picked up a little something... I'm just sayin...

I have had so many dissenting opinions from so many different doctors on carbs, fat etc... as far as health implications.

Some go with the traditional super low fat is best- even when its very high carb. Others praise high protein, higher fat, and lower carb.

People get very emotional about this topic for some reason- its almost like politics at a certain point.

Eh, you have to be careful with this. Tons of MDs were educated on stuff from the 50s/60s that is pretty much bullshit now, and many of them never bother updating their knowledge from med school (CME be damned). Also you leave out PHDs from your list, many of whom are doing the research that the MDs spout off to their patients (I am not one of those PHDs that you should necessarily listen to, fwiw).
