Eight new loans, 7 of which were made through money that was repaid by previous loans.
Buy In 2 Giving has loaned over $21,000 since last March! If you haven't joined your other DC'ers in this effort, now is a great time

Bump, 3,new loans made for some rwanda farmers,
I just finished the book "the end of poverty, how we can make it happen in our lifetime" by jeffrey sachs... a great book how the west got rich and how we can change the lives of the poorest for good... really a great read!
Great to so we passed the 20k mark, up to 25k!
Awesome job guys! I'll make a new one today.
new one to an El Salvadorian woman with a shop.
2 new loans made...
Atm i'm travelling for half a year through africa and asia and I see the projects we sponsor through the dc kiva challenge come to life..
Being able to start or extend your small shop is such an incredible jump forward in the living standards in these countries where the average income is between $1-$4!!! A day! With a small loan the people asking for loans through kiva just get that little help that they need to greatly improve their income...
Just keep making these loans guys!
Bump for six new loans!
All of them were in Tajikistan and Jordan and were close to expiring.
yeah new one from me. Lady in colombia
Just made 2 more loans. Check out this pic of Gabriel's shop. Once you see it, then you'll know why I HAD to lend to him ![]()
Gabriel's Shop
Nice. Stars.
Bump for new loans. Both to Iraqi's who need to renovate and expand their stores.
Interestingly, many Muslim's in Iraq and the rest of the Muslim world can't take out traditional loans because interest on money is prohibited. The idea is that money is valueless in and of itself and is just a means for exchange, so it is immoral to charge interest on it. These loans are 0% interest and have a service fee to cover the costs of making the loan.
Just thought that was interesting and wanted to share.

Yeah that is kinda interesting. It sounds like more of a cultural thing rather than religious, though I wouldn't be surprised if there was something in the Koran about it...

It's a religious thing. Historically, Catholicism had the same viewpoint on 'moneylenders' which is why most Middle Age and Renaissance moneylenders were Jewish. It was forbidden for Catholics to earn money on interest made on loans for basically the same reason.
And yet, if you go back even further into the Torah, the Book of Ezekiel considers charging interest as a major sin, but does encourage interest free loans.
Wikipedia serves as a good summary of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loans_and_interest_in_Judaism#In_Christianity
LOL that's a twisted history. I particularly like the point where the Italian christians got round the no-interest rule by offering loans that had to be insured against loss ![]()
I remember from sunday school the story of Jeebus kicking the money changers out of the temple... but was that a different thing, not lending cash but exchanging currencies and taking a slice as a fee or whatever?
Also.. that bible story gets a lot better if you imagine it with Jeebus having some Chuck Norris style whoopass skillz.
So the domains www.bi2g.org and www.buyintogiving.org are about to expire. Should I renew them? Does the website serve a purpose? If so, should I renew only 1?

Well, BF really screwed over BI2G going very big for obvious reasons, but that won't be the case forever. We should keep the website up and ready to go when the online poker environment gets friendly again.
Does it cost much to keep the domains registered? I can pitch in some money if needed.
Found a coupon that allows me to renew both of them for 2 years for $30.72.
If anyone has been wanting to try Kiva but hasn't for whatever reason, then now is your chance to try it for FREE! Just click here and you can start a free trial!
