So help me out here. Is scotch supposed to be drank on ice or at room temperature? or is it just a preference thing?

Usually one to two ice cubes "open up" the flavor of it.
No one likes red wine ?
Based on this topic have just bought some Laphroaig 10yo, having never really tried any single malts. I'm not sure where it stands in terms of quality tho.
How much are these whiskies over there (in the US)? This was $35, about the same as Glenfiddich 12yo

I'll drink it just fine, but don't know too much about brands and such.

yes, its a very common brand in the US.
Is it blasphemy to add water or ice to a single malt scotch?

A drop or two of water can help it open up, but you don't want small ice cubes (melt too quickly and dilute the taste). In general unless the bar really knows what it's doing I just order it neat, though something like Laphroiag often tastes much better with a splash of water.

It's a Canadian brand of whiskey.
So, anything other than neat is somewhat sketchy? Like, you would never do a 50/50 single malt scotch/water mix? What about ice, is it scotch dependant or a matter of personal taste? I've read that neat with a water chaser is the "right" way to drink good scotch but I also know "scotch" people who take ice in their Laphroiag (ask for specific # of cubes), so I guess h2o ev must be at least a little scotch dependant.
What would "knowing what he's doing" mean for a bartender, scotch-wise?
Is there a special way to drink it, like there is with wine?
thanks for the response btw!

1) If they serve ice cubes, they should be HUGE ice cubes (dissolve slower). Something like this maybe.
2) If you ask for scotch "with a splash" of water it should be just that - with a splash. I've gone places before where you ask for a splash and it comes back 15-20% water.
I definitely wouldn't do 50/50 scotch/water. Ice is dependent on the type of the scotch, etc. In Laphroaig I usually use a cube or two.
Rob
Thanks Rob
I don't understand how you can drink laphroiag, I mean it's so smokey. But i'm with the Glendfiddich 12yo people, def a good whisky. I also really like Gentlemans Jack, but it's kinda hard to find here in Denmark, has anyone tasted it?
About the ice/water thing, i've read that 2-3 drops of water takes some of the smokey taste, but I prefer ice.
Oh and bushmills is also a good scotch
