I'm finally able to afford a new computer, but I have been avoiding upgrading in fear of not knowing how to move my HEM/hand histories, poker clients, etc. quickly and easily without losing anything or making it appear I am doing something wrong (like breaking the 1 player per account rule or something) causing me to be unable to play. I'm planning on buying an external hard drive to transfer the actual files, but which files do I transfer? How do I go about it in a way that will not cause HEM/FTP/PS to think I'm breaking their rules? Do I need to set it up in a certain order? Anything I need to avoid? Do I need to do something to de-activate my old computer or something?

Anyone know how to do the same with i-tunes? Any other advice from those who have upgraded their towers before? (only advice I've gotten so far is get at least 2gigs of RAM and a graphics card with dual monitor support).

Thanks for any help

Usernames on poker clients are stored on their servers, so as long as you don't create a new account you'll be fine. As far as HEM, I'm pretty sure they have an export button somewhere in there.

You can just take the HDD from the old computer and put it in your new one.
If you don't however I recommend Wiping the harddrive with something like BCWipe since just deleting files doesn't actually remove them from a harddrive and you don't want someone going though it and finding your personal information.

Sorry, not very computer savy-does HDD=hard drive? my computer is very old, so I plan to get a new machine with 2ce the hard drive space, so unless there's a way to have both, that wouldn't really work. Wiping is a great idea-I was going to save it in my lock box just in case I needed a file I didn't transfer, but certainly when I decide I no longer need it I will get it wiped with BCWipe.

thanks.

Yeah, HDD means hard disk drive, same as harddisk.

Don't know what 2ce is? But you can have multiple HDDs hooked up to a single PC with raid. Thats kinda advanced though.

Since your computer is pretty old I doubt its a very big HDD you could probably just transfer all the files directly to your new one and still have a ton of room left, its not really hard to do there are tons of tutorials.. somewhere.

How are you buying your new machine anyway?(Just interested)

I've got a good friend who works as a licensed Dell re-sale guy, so I get amazing prices on desktops/laptops (Dell and other brands as well) that are anywhere from a few months to a few years old. Here's an example of the one I'm looking at:

2. Dell XPS 420 Tower. Super fast high end graphics / gaming computer. Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz processor, 4 gigs of ram, 320 gig hard drive, DVD burner, memory card reader, 8600GT Nvidia Card (supports 2 digital monitors) Windows 7 and Office 2007. Price is $350. Can upgrade the hard drive to a 1 TB (terabyte) hard drive for $40 more. Picture is here http://cdn.overstock.com/images/products/L11931884.jpg

It's kind of overkill, but with 1TB of hard drive space, and this type of graphics card, I won't need to replace it for a long time. I also have a fancy soundblaster sound card in a PCI slot on my current machine that I can transfer-I'm a musician and do a lot of recording. He's also got 2 Samsung 22 inch monitors for $150 each I'm going to pick up-it's gonna be SWEET!

He also has some VERY inexpensive machines (under $200) that are bare-boned from last year. We might do some haggling and see if I can get just what I need for a real good price. (though it would be cool to be able to finally play games on my computer besides poker)

It's honestly sad that I didn't do this earlier-I was under the impression that it was a challenge to transfer the data. I've known the guy for almost a year, bought a laptop for my GF and my mom, and still use this machine from my frosh. year at college ( fall 2000) It's needed a RAM update, a new DVD burner, a sound card update, and a fan replacement, but is still working pretty much like new...

Poker Software:
Download/install from the site you use
*You will need to copy your notes file (even if only use color-coding).
.......In PokerStars, it is C:\Program Files\PokerStars\notes.xml
.......In FullTilt (not sure where it is)

HEM Transfer/Migration:
OLD METHOD: Transfer HM to New PC.wmv . . . (HEM site 7-minute video)
WARNING: in the video, they "nuke" the old HEM folder (before the install on new PC). IMO, do not 'nuke' anything until you verify the migration is successful.

NEW METHOD: HEM has a new "Backup & Restore" wizard . . . (HEM site 7-minute video)

Things to verify after transfer:
1. Cash hands
2. Tourney hands
3. HEM (and Poker site) notes
4. HUD setting (and any other custom settings or reports)

The HEM registration is suppose to be for two (2) computers. If you run into any problems with this, contact HEM support. They will help you.

Thank you! I assume it's best to download the poker site software first, then paste in the notes, and finally download HEM and restore it, correct?

The order (HEM vs Site) does not really matter. They are independent of each other. But yes, install site software before transferring the given site's notes (so the directory is created first).

Be aware that in HEM, depending on the size of your database (and hand history), the migration will take some time.
