Is AF a dead stat?

Hi everyone.

I've been meaning to reevaluate the value of the aggression factor (AF) stat in ring games for some time now. As many have pointed out, a player's AF does not include his checking and folding tendencies, which is a huge leak in representing his aggression. Surely the shortcomings of this stat are documented and known by many.

That leads me to my question: is AF a dead stat in your poker analytics? Does anyone still show it on the HUD, and if so, how do you use it properly?

I am thinking about phasing in AFq (aggression frequency) to use on my HUD instead, but I have no idea how to interpret that set of stats. To anyone who uses AFq, can you explain it, or point to a place where it's well explained?

Thanks!

not totally dead. i mean if someone has a extreme AF then it is useful. in general i would say no. i mean if its super tiny V never raises so cool. if its really high then it depends on how many hands he is playing. but punch line, generally not the best stat imo.

Anyways, i love notes much more then stats. even thou im finding in MTT's when im multitabling i kinda need stats for reshove spots. that kinda spot stats are extremely useful.

If I had to choose one I'd take AFq over AF any day.

I too don't know how to interpret this stat can anyone elaborate. I've seen it talked about in a video but don't remember which one

I also don't know how to use those stats as well. I took AFq off my HUD just cause most players had similar aggression frequency (regs) didn't find it that useful.

Almost all people I talk to have that on their HUD so it obviously works well if you know how to interpret the numbers.

With the fish, if I see that their river aggression is 10% and of all of sudden bombs the river I might call real light since they are so polarized. If they can not have the nuts in that spot I will call otherwise I fold.

AFq is the percentage of the time your opponent takes an aggressive action.

So someone with a 30% AFq is betting or raising 30% of the time.

I think we all understand this, but I still struggle with how to apply it. I've never seen its application discussed in a video. And, yes, I've read the posts on 2p2 that discuss it.

FWIW, I have both AF and AFq in my HUD, but can't remember the last time I really used one of them in a major decision. People talk about how AFq >>>> AF all the time, yet, despite allegedly being superior, I don't think either is hugely useful. Obviously, notes and reads are 100x more valuable than either.

I use the AF stat as a part of my decision making process when I am trying to come up with good counter strategies.

For example say I get to the river with a fairly strong hand I'll be more inclined to check to induce vs someone with a 70% river AFq compared with someone with a 30% AFq.

Another example, I was playing a reg HU a few days ago and they had a 70% turn AFq, so I decided to start check raising more on the turn as opposed to the flop.

Its on in my HUD. I think thats another piece of information which help us to take the right decision so why not using it.

Sure, but these tendencies are easily observed through reads and notes. Further, the stats take a long time to converge and don't tell the whole story, where a good observation can be rock solid right away. Most fish and even a good percentage of regs in my games (up to 200NL and 10/20 LHE) tend to be pretty unbalanced in these spots, and will, for instance, fastplay draws and always slowplay made hands. I have never understood how to get that information from AF or AFq.
