I know there are probably some threads on 2p2 dealing with this, but I'm too lazy to search for them.
My buddy is 5'9 and weighs a little bit over 300 lbs. He loves fast food and especially late night Chick-Fil-A. I bet him that he couldn't lose 100 lbs over the course of a year (he's been ~300 lbs for the past 3 years) and gave him 2-1 odds with me betting up to 4k.
Which side do you guys like? If he only had 10 months to achieve the weight loss am I a total lock?

I hope not. It's worth 4k for your friend not to be obese.
A body mass index considered healthy is between 18.5 and 24.9.
Over 30 is considered obese.
Your buddy's BMI is 44.3 which is officially categorised as "unhealthy fatass".
I hope your bet works and he slims down.

Yikes!
LOL. It doesn't apply perfectly to all body types, and it has come under fire for that... but at least it was an attempt to correlate weight with height to create a number that better displayed whether a person was underweight, overweight or neither...
Clearly some people have a very slight build etc.
Also the numbers are different for male vs female... and age too i'm pretty sure.
Anyway. no matter. Still useful as a starting point.

A few years ago, I dropped around 100 (starting at 300+) in a year and I'm 6'3". If he's motivated, he can easily win his side.
If your goal is to inspire your friend to get healthy, you might figure out something to discourage crazy moves near the end of the diet. I've seen some diet bets that starts with the best intent end with the dieter starving and/or dehydrating themselves, and that doesn't help anything. If you can get a good BMI measurement, that might be a better metric since it would reward muscle increase instead of punishing it because of the density difference to fat.

I think it's definitely doable. I was just wondering what everyone thought the line should be. He's going to be weighing himself tonight and I'm probably going to book unless anyone tells me that 2-1 is ridiculous.
Re:Nixon - you think that including a workout stipulation along with the original weight loss would be a good idea? I definitely don't want him doing anything stupid towards the end of the bet, and I think perhaps including some type of running goal (i.e running 2 miles in 14 minutes) would be a pretty good idea.

I am proof positive it is doable. In March of 2009 I went to the doctors for an ear and sinus infection, I weighed 334 pounds. The doctor gave me some anti-biotics and said "we need to talk about high blood pressure, yours is out of control and you need to lose weight right now." By March of 2010 I was at 220 pounds, I am now at about 210. I'm 6'3" FWIW. Never felt so good and proud of myself in my life. I recently ran my first 5K without stopping. Willpower, willpower, willpower. Its what its all about.
Anyway, good luck to your friend. Just felt like throwing in my story. Its amazing to have people who you havent seen in a while not even recognize you.
PS there was no secret diet or anything to what I did. EVERYONE asks the same thing "oh how did you do that?" and they look so sad when I say "alot of exercise and eating right" they all want a magic bullet to make it easy but it wasnt. Just hard work thats all. At minimum an hour of exercise a day 5 days a week, usually about an hour and a half.

Alright well I booked the bet with my buddy. I wanted to incorporate some sort of workout stipulation, so he has to run two miles in 14 minutes by the end of the bet. Below are the terms of the bet:
i) lose 93 lbs. by June 11, 2011
ii) run two miles in 14 minutes on June 11, 2011
I'm betting 2k to win his 1k.
I think my side is definitely a dog and I really don't mind as long as this process stimulates positive change in his health and perhaps other areas of his life. He's weighing in tonight.

Good luck. Hope you lose... but then pool the 3K and go on a sick road trip or something.
