Gday guys
I have always been interested by the Japanese culture and cinema. They are the best for colorful animated movies. I have watched "Spirited Away" and "Akira" and I am really looking forward to see some other good ones. Any advice?
Cheers guys

Oh man, Watership Down is incredible. Never make the mistake of assuming it's for children: It's so far removed from a childrens film, and worth every second of your time. It's different to the TV series, which had far reduced violence and a more child friendly outlook.

Agreed, one of my favorite books and a great movie.

Age/Sex/Status ?
If you want to watch the ones which I could recommend to anyone, go for the Miyazaki ones (from Ghibli Studio) as Tehanu mentioned. I'd personally recommend "Princess Mononoke", but the ones which are made before "Spirited Away" are all excellent.
Recently the Japanese Anime industry has been evolving around a) making mangas into anime, and b) "moe".
The former has many good animes, but I would rather recommend you to read it in the manga form first.
I am not even going to try to explain "moe" in English, but if you are a male, not so cool, not so bold, not so strong, not so socialized etc (you get the type of guy), but you think "hey, why can't I have a girlfriend?" "why isn't there a sudden appearance of the One girl I am waiting for" etc, hey, there are a bunch of animes for you...

I'm 3rd-ing (or whatever) the Miyazaki/Ghibli recommendations (although Grave of the Fireflies is depressing as hell). Also:
Perfect Blue
Ghost in the Shell (Stand-alone Complex series is pretty great too)
Personally, though, I tend to prefer some of the shows to the movies, even though a lot of them (though not the ones I'll mention soon) are pretty drawn-out and shallow affairs. But if you're interested in shows as well, then along with the Ghost in the Shell series, I'll go ahead and say that I liked Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Paranoia Agent. The movie for Cowboy Bebop was decent too.

Which one do you recommend exactly from Miyazaki?
The most well knowns are My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo.
I guess you could also watch Earthsea (Gedo senki) directed by Miyazaki's son. It was a bit of a disappointment but definitely watchable and my nickname is from that book series so
