Hi everyone,

A few months ago I was visiting my old hometown for a month and my internet connection really sucked so I was worried whether I’d be able to play poker during my stay there. I had heard that a friend of a friend had started a “Poker Office” with some of his friends a few months earlier so I got curious and asked him what the deal was. They basically rented an office space downtown, dragged all their computers down there and played poker there every day. At first I thought it was kind of a ridiculous idea since I always thoughy that one of the best things about being a professional online poker player is that you can get out of bed, make some coffee and then “go to work” in your smelly bath robe and ugly grey underwear. Plus, you never have to worry about traffic or the time it takes to commute (yuck!) there. However, after 3,5 years of playing poker professionally, finding motivation to play a sufficient amount of hands each month is getting trickier and trickier (especially since I don’t move up in stakes as quickly as I should) and I find that I normally spend 2-4 hours each morning just messing around doing other stuff (reading, playing guitar, watching TV and so on) so that by the time I get to it, it’s already late in the afternoon and I only have time to put in a 1000 hands or so before it gets late and I have to / want to do other stuff.

When I finally got bored enough and realized that I wouldn’t make any money that month I decided to join their Poker Office. It was amazing, the first few days I played 4k hands a day with seemingly no effort at all. When I got tired I would just take a break and hang out with the other players. We talked strategy, discussed hands, railed each other, played videogames or just hung out and cracked jokes. After a few days I slowed down a little and “only” played about 3k hands a day for the rest of the month. But still, 3k hands a day for a month adds up to a pretty impressive piece of work (and a bunch of cash too).

So anyway, I’m thinking about either joining something similar here in New York City or starting something similar myself. So if any of you guys are already lucky enough to be part of a club/office/group of friends like this, and you’re looking for more people to share the rent with, let me know.

I’m going to go ahead and assume that there aren’t many of these offices around though so I’m planning on having to start one myself. Obviously, renting an office space and waiting for people to join would be kind of idiotic so I thought that IF there’s any interest in something like this we can start out playing at my place (just bring your lap top) and if everything goes well and more and more people want to join we can discuss renting an office somewhere.

I live with my girlfriend but she works until 6 p.m. so having people over everyday and play an insane amount of poker(!) during the afternoon works perfectly. I play mostly 5/10$ shorthanded NL Hold’em as well as a little 10/20$ and low stakes PLO. The goal for me would be to play at least 40k hands a month but anything above 30k would be acceptable. Your goals can obviously be whatever you want them to be.

It doesn’t matter what game or stakes you play, how often you play or whether you are a professional or not. So don’t think that just because you’re barely making ends meet at 0.50/1$ that you don’t belong here, or that just because you play 25/50$ you can’t improve your game in a place like this. I believe that you can always learn something from any poker player even if it’s someone less experienced than yourself. Even if another player has nothing to teach you, you will always improve your own game by teaching others.

The only “requirement” I have for people wanting to join this group is that you are serious about your game and that you are a winner in/at your regular game/stake. It’s not going to be possible for me to actively coach other players or rail people since I nowadays charge people for that so it would be unfair to my current “students”. I will however gladly discuss hands and strategies with anyone who’s interested. As long as you’re mainly focusing on poker while you’re here you can obviously do whatever you want. The main point of this whole thing is that we have a good time so that we can play more and better poker.

So if you feel that you want to put in more hands at the tables, meet other online players and learn something from them and improve your game, or you’ve just gotten tired of the antisocial aspects of online poker and think that having other players in the same situation to hang out with will motivate you to play more, get better and eventually play higher and win more, this would suit you perfectly.

Let me know if you’re interested. Feel free to PM me about any questions you might have and we can start setting something up!

Man this would be awesome. I don't live in NYC or play full time YET so I obviously couldn't join this group, but when I do eventually move to full time, I wouldn't mind getting involved in something like this.
