Villain is 50/10 over 30 hands. Postflop he is aggro with draws, and fishy with weak 2ndpair hands and ISD all the way to river. Saw him bet 3 streets with 7-hi flush draw, and bet fairly large on river when missed. He's recently lost a big pot, so good chance he is tilting. I have other reads on him, which I don't have on my notes, but overall - he's a huge fish with wide range. On this hand I think bottom of his range is any draw and Tx, even as low as T2o. I'm at least a 60% favorite vs his range.

Question: In cash game, I jam all day. In tournaments, is it correct to play more conservatively in order to survive? Let's say I know for sure I'm a 60% favorite over his entire range, and I know he will call vs a shove. I'm not sure if ICM considerations and survival should come into play here. Thanks for any advice.

It is only when close to bubbles or final tables that icm gets strong, elsewhere it is really just chip/cash style value. You do have to adjust for things like your edge or the opponents tightness due to tournie life fears. I wouldn't go too far dropping close chip ev spots though or you might start giving away your edge.

Thanks BaseMetal. So I'm basically going to play like a cash game until I get close to the bubble.

There are slight adjustments, it may be better being more heavy handed at pushing or raising big as you do have to worry about tournie life, and also adjust to others that overdo this. Also as you can't restack when playing short/medium stacked you may have to tighten up your range as you can't afford to always c-bet... and maybe a few other small changes compared with cash

As sort of inferred, worry about making +EV decisions and not so much about preservation/ICM implications so early on. The short of it is that yes ICM always exists but it is so much more likely that your biases will lead you to making mistakes in trying to apply them so early and the impacts aren't nearly as great. As Base said playing MTTs early on like you would a cash game isn't a bad idea Smile In time you will figure out what adjustments to make which may differ from that of RGs.. good luck!

Oh and yeah sounds like you should get it in vs. this guy!

Thank you Base and AMT for your solid advice. I definitely need to play more tourneys to start "getting" the small adjustments needed. So for now I think I'll continue to play the early game with cash game mentality until middle game comes around. I'm starting to play more tourneys these days to prepare for a weekend at the WSOP, so any advice greatly appreciated.

i have one thing to differ from base and AMT: if villain is spazzy, tilty, and has a wide range wouldn't we just want to call flop and call every turn ( i assume he is shoving here everytime) and let all the bluffs in his range keep going? he is setting a huge price to realize any equity he has already and we are ahead most likely against a huge % of his range and can pick up more equity ott. I just would hate myself if somehow he found the fold button otf when i knew he has so many weakish hands in his range
