I would go for windows, because you can use almost everything out there, mac has it restrictions. You can get a very good pc for 1500 bucks. If you really want more in-depth thinking of your hardware, pm me and we'll talk about it.

I've had pretty good experiences as both a student and a poker player on a macbook. They come with solid specs (albeit overpriced if you're just looking at specs) and a durable metal body and glass screen. To top it off the pro models have 7 hours (8 for the 17" model) of battery life, and yes it CAN actually get this lifetime. I regularly get 8 hours from my macbook pro with wifi on.
You won't get that life when running PT3 or HEM though as the HDD activity uses more battery power.
Windows through bootcamp is always an option on these as well. Parallells / VMWare Fusion / VirtualBox can all run your boot camp partition in a virtual machine as well. That means wether you boot into windows, or use a VM you can be working with the same installation.
As for earlier comments about your computer being "damaged" by windows. Thats just goofy, its extremely difficult for a virus to damage your actual hardware.
I should note that if you're die hard HEM user then don't bother with a mac. You'll spend too much time booted into windows that you might as well have just bought a regular laptop. If this is the case that sony linked earlier looks solid.
Well diabloic, finally i've met someone with a decent answer between mac and windows. For all those maccies out there

My new favorite place for Desktops is Dell Outlet. Just bought a 435MT, awesome performance for way less because of a scratch/dent I can't find. And it shipped next day because it already was built.
Here is the best computer for the money right now: http://www.amazon.com/Gateway-NV5929u-mislabeled-NV5927u-computer/dp/B0036FFH4A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1268075737&sr=8-1
Gateway f'd up bad and mislabeled a batch of computers that went out. The actual face value is $750, but you can get it as low as $626 at amazon. It has the new i5 processor, but was labeled with the i3. Has a blu-ray player, webcam, 320 GB, 4GB RAM. I bought one from one of Amazon's affiliate sellers and it is great.

Wow that is a pretty solid deal. Hows the HDD perform under a HUD's load when multi tabling?
very well. The computer is solid.
Whatever you do, don't get a dell laptop. They are sending me my 3rd replacement motherboard tomorrow for my studio 15, and I wouldn't want anyone else to go through all the crap I have with their "tech support."
Macs are solid, but if you need a big screen mac laptops are $$$.

Definitely true, my 17" ran $3200 CAD You could hook up an external monitor to get a larger screen though.
