Perhaps this is the wrong place to ask this question but what's the difference between the 45% VIP or the 35% rakeback that's offered through DC for Merge right now?

35% rakeback is just straight rakeback. The 45% VIP is if you opt into the VIP program on Merge. You get the equivalent of 45% rakeback if you are in the top tier of the VIP program. If you aren't in this tier, and you probably won't be, then your rakeback % will be much lower - usually around the 18-20% range.

Opposite. 3-6k hands per month will get you about 12-14% rakeback depending on the stakes. Unless you play very high volume, it's almost always better to take the rakeback.
