I am not a guro, but I would:
1) Virus scan the entire computer
2) Delete temporary files
3) Defragment all drives
If 1-3 did not help, I would backup all files on computer on external hard drive and format/reset to factory default settings.

Having proper hardware installed is a must to make your system work properly. Don’t forget to install good quality hardware and compatible software for them. If the software is not compatible with the particular hardware, it may create some problem and the installed a powerful antivirus along with the cleaner i.e. Registry Cleaner which protects your system from external virus and make it smoothly running.

Registry cleaner is a great idea, because your pc will get bogged down with repeat files. CC cleaner is free and a good tool, and also running random scandisk from your Pc tools is a good idea.

Here goes. Purge your HEM database if you don't need hands. If you do store them on an external harddrive, along with music files you listen to while playing. i find this helps. Buy some more ram, it's cheap and if your computer has space for more put more in, it's the cheapest way to upgrade your computer. You know those free trials of various shit you downloaded 6 months ago? delete go. Go on to add and remove programs see which ones don't get use often.
If any of this doesn't work, using a SSD harddrive may help.
If you want to upload your computer specs (as in GPU CPU RAM blah blah) we can probably see if it's your hardware or more of a software problem. Hope this helps

does anyone know what i should attempt to do? i tried what this thread said and now i dont have a good portion of my old hands/database left.
If you ended up reinstalling postgresql you will have to import the hands again to your new DB.
All original hands that are auto-imported get moved to an archive for performance reasons. Your \HMArchive is likely not in your \Holdem Manager directory. We normally suggest you use C:\HMArchive, but you may have put it anywhere. The archive should be organized by \Month\DayOfMonth (example: D:\HMArchive\2009\07\31).
If you happen to play at pokerstars then I would suggest you email support@pokerstars.com and ask for ALL your old Hand Histories and Tournament Histories/Summaries.
They will send you an email with links to zip files of your hand histories. Download all the zip files. Right-Click > Extract the contents of each zip file to a new folder. HM > Import From Folder for all of the unzipped hands.
The tournament summaries should be attached to the email as .htm files. Download the attachments. HM > Import File(s) for all of those files. It will probably ask you to search/select your Pokerstars screen name. If the files are sent as .html you will need to rename them (Right-Click > Rename) from .html to .htm extensions.
