Second Monitor Woes

Recently a friend left the country and he asked me if I wanted anything from his PC, so I cheekily asked for his 24" HD monitor to replace my rather peasant one.

Now I've been running dual monitored for a while but my 2nd monitor has been a projector.

So I decide I can run the 2 monitors I now have side by side and save the projector for when I want to watch an HD movie or some football game etc.

Sadly while the Samsung set itself up as the primary monitor perfectly Windows XP wouldn't recoginise my original monitor as all, this was especailly annoying as I run USB stuff through it and that WAS recognised.

Then imagine my surprised when I went, oh well let's try the projector and the bloody thing worked, with a little resolution tweeking, so I'm back to my original config except with a 24" HD monitor so it's not the end of the world but I'd just like to know if anyone's experienced this problem before. There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with either my graphics card or my original monitor, they just won't talk to each other when I try and use 2 actual monitors but the projector gets on with either of them as a 2nd monitor.

I'm really confused...any help?

Which plugs do you use? You said, you´re running one on USB?

I use two monitors, one on the VGA- and the other on the - yeah, what is it called? DVI? HDMI? - plug ...

They're both on DVI

The only slight difference is that I'm using a VGA/DVI Adapter on the Projector becasue the input to the projector is VGA and to the Graphics card is DVI

Have you tried re-installing the graphic drivers to let the computer "discover" the monitors again? Tried both monitors as primary/secondary?
Did you install any additional drivers for the monitors?

If all else fails, upgrade to Win7 Wink
