Hi all, not sure if this is the right forum, accept my apologies if its in the wrong spot

For the last year or so, i have always open raised (playing up to $20 stars tourneys) with excellent results. Indeed, I think that the main reason for my success in these tourneys was almost never open limping.

Almost everyone on 2+2 says never to limp in 6max.

Sklansky makes a couple of examples where it can be done, and mehta et al make a case for different sized raises depending upon how many callers you may have, and what hand you will likely hit (ie top pair vs draw vs set)

I saw a post by WoT here recently where he suggested open limping, but I cant find the exact post.

Can anyone offer advice to a longstanding 'always open raiser' to when it might be a good idea to open limp? I know some peoples game seems to be to open limp in LP, then bet when checked to on the flop. Blinds have nothing so they pick up the pot. My theory is that a raise will get rid of the blinds if they have nothing, and a cbet will win just as often. Also, its kinda very nice when you have aa on the button, and then the blinds come over the top, as they are sick of getting stolen from

All comments much appreciated

i can't speak for tournaments or for live full ring play, but as far as 6max online goes, i think it's virtually never correct to open limp without some extenuating circumstances. For example, some extremely good nosebleed nl players will open limp the button on occasion, but i think it's because they have specific reads as to who is in the blinds and why limping is better than raising (perhaps the blinds 3bet too much, or play extra poorly in limped pots, or something else entirely).

As far as HU NLHE goes, limping becomes a much more viable strategy when you're involved in an aggressive match where there's tons of 3betting.

Here's a link where I talk a bit about times you should consider limping in a HU match: http://www.deucescracked.com/forums/21-Heads-Up-Poker/topics/2502-NL-Limpage

I can't really think of a scenario i'd advocate open limping in 6max though off hand. Perhaps against a super loose, super passive, super station guy in the big blind and we're in the small blind with something like 64o where if we raise we're just bloating the pot w/ 6high vs someone who wont fold pre or post, but if we limp, we can take the immediate pot odds and look to play postflop vs a terrible opponent.

Other than that, not much else comes to mind.

Thanks Wilt, that was the article I was referring to. I didnt find it during my search, and just assumed (wrongly) that you were referring to 6max or full ring.

Good to hear I wont need to change that part of my game!
