There is so rarely any high stakes Hold'em action on Stars anymore, and it was getting increasingly sparse on FTP as well. If/when online poker is legislated in the United States, will we see a return to HSNL or do you feel as if the game is too deeply understood by too many players and thus is an artifact of the past?

What do you think will prevent it from running again?
Reg vs reg edges in high level nl are hard to define precisely. The trend these days is that most regulars never play anyone of better or similar skill level to them. The default nowadays is that when players are in doubt about their edge they just tend to not play.
So the main trouble HSNL action is that many (perhaps most) regulars will not play if there's no obvious edge they have in the game. The prevalence in tools to help people assess their skill matchups have most definitely hurt the action because people aren't sitting and playing a few orbits to see if they have an edge, if they use ptr or similar and see there's no whale they might decide to not play at all. There's even a fair chunk of players that will have an edge but still won't play because they are only interested in playing that high with a huge edge. While many of the top tier players in the world will play mediocre regulars, many of those weaker regulars will only play if a fish is playing. So you basically need a fish to play to get a game going and usually 2 other people starting tables by playing HU.

i watched a sick game between kanu7 and wilhasha last sunday, wilhasha got owned for about 300k
Yeah, and Kanu7's edge is probably not that big but playing such aggro games against tough players will often result in a sick variance fest with someone getting soulcrushed for some insane amount.

Fish get killed too quickly by good NL players these days.
There is little influx of rich fish with endless supplies of money.
This may change if there is a new poker boom, but I'm not holding out.

Logged into carbon, and right now there is one 5/10 nl heads up match; right before that started, literally the biggest NLHE game going was 200 nl. And this is the biggest player pool of any site with US players, I think? I know the bad beat jackpot is affecting the stakes mid/high stakes players are playing, though.

I think when you become so good that you play crazy high stakes the next biggest step that seperates great players from amazing players is the ability to play anybody without fear. Its ok saying my edge vs this guy is minimal so i wont play, but the people like ivey, isildur or durrr who say fuck that and play anyway because its not just about the money for them progress to become truly great.
