I never said I want a shitty car, I just want the essentials and nothing else. There's plenty of low flash, high quality cars.
Then I would rather take the bus.

This may also be a Euro thing
Public transportation is not a viable option in a lot of US cities.

When I worked in Silicon Valley, there were areas near my office where walking was not an option - no sidewalk, no crosswalk, and 5 lanes of traffic to get across the street.

Where were you working? I find the bay area to be very pedestrian/bike friendly, especially the south bay.
That was in Sunnyvale, not far from the AMD campus there.
Things were much better in San Francisco, where biking was by far the fastest way to get to work.

Maybe they have improved it since you were here. I've lived and/or worked Sunnyvale for the last several years and have found it pretty easy to get around on foot. The public transit options are also pretty good.
/derail (which is not Caltrain joke, but could be)
I don't doubt it - I haven't been down there in about 10 years.

Even when it takes you 20 minutes to get to work by car and 2 hours by bus?

Then I would most likely never have taken the job.. or I would bike... or buy a scooter.
This is my current main mode of transportation:
http://superscootersales.com/?wpsc-product=super-turbo-1000-lithium
For round trips of 10 miles or less, it is ideal. I ride it standing up in the (almost always empty) bike lanes near my home office. It takes me 28 mph on a straightaway and eats hills for breakfast. It costs about 6 cents of electricity to fully charge.
As an added bonus, with my blue bicycle helmet and reflective orange vest, I am James-Bond super-sexy when riding it.
Then I would most likely never have taken the job.. or I would bike... or buy a scooter.
people don't have the luxury of picking between comparable jobs based on commute, most of the time at least, especially in the US. and there are other factors such as cost of rent/housing in relation to good jobs. and when people get tired of getting rained on riding their scooters (or have families), they eventually buy those boring, practical cars.
the argument you're making only applies to a small segment of people at a select time in their life in select areas of the world.
and to reiterate Steppin's point, reliable and fun are not mutually exclusive. pushing anything to its limits is fun--as the saying goes, "it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than to drive a fast car slow."
To say you wouldnt take the job then is pretty ridiculous for numerous reasons.

Because I dont want to be forced to buy a 10K car that I would hate? This situation is so player dependent that I don't think it is possible to make general observations.
I can only speak for myself.
If I own a car it is because I have to drive a lot.
If I have to drive a lot I want to enjoy driving.
If I'm in a situation where I have to drive a lot in a shitty car I must have taken a job as cab driver in the US.
This is a silly argument. Improva likes a little flair in his cars. Nothing wrong with that. Personally I think improva's mechanic would enjoy his Audi more than improva did, but people don't have to like the boring cars.
If you're ever in Houston improva, we can hit the autocross course and you might enjoy it more than you think.

what if you can't afford a better car? Having a bike or a scooter as a dedicated option is not feasible in the vast majority of American locales.
eta: i certainly understand the desire to want something you use all the time to be awesome, but saying "awesome car or no car" seems a touch rigid.
