relevant: Dateline 1998 IIHS Midsize Sedans Offset Crash Test

never really thought about this stuff before since i always drove hand-me-down cars, but i'm more confident in the crash test ratings by the IIHS after seeing this--they're funded by insurance companies, not by the government. makes a big difference imo. and *gasp* i've been driving in a leg-breaker car all these years while thinking i was in a safe car. ignorance truly is bliss.

Cargo space comparison with Ford Explorer? Not even close.....unless you have 3 rows of passengers behind the driver.

Honda FIT and FIT Sport
Cargo Volume (cu ft, seat up/down) 20.6 / 57.3 20.6 / 57.3

Newest Ford Explorer Specs
Cargo Volume Behind First Row [cu. ft.] 80.7
Cargo Volume Behind Second Row [cu. ft.] 43.8
Cargo Volume Behind Third Row [cu. ft.] 21

i actually heard this claim in another review, but here is the claim in a Car & Driver review. bastards... made me look like a fool on the DC forums. this will not stand!

This thread makes a me a little sad every time I read it. Life is too short for boring cars IMHO.

I would get a used car. Porsche, audi, bmw or benz. Your fear of audis is most likely internet biased. Toyota and Audi are year after year the cars with the fewest issues in Denmark.

Bingo. I was wondering why used cars were not ever discussed.

In the US, craigslist is one of your best places for car shopping (especially in big metro areas). If you know what you are looking for, you can actually make money (like in poker). I have seen a freelance used car re-seller buy cars off of Craigslist, spruce them up and sell them.

With the economy being the way it is, you are liable to get some huge deals right now. Better negotiable opportunities. Just find that person who just went back-n-forth to work and are upgrading -- or getting divorced (no kidding).

Not everyone is a car guy though. And my Honda (prelude, not fit) is a pretty fun car to drive for a car driven by the wrong wheels.

My fear of Audi/VW comes from knowing 3 that blew engines within a year of ownership, one of which spent more time getting repaired than being driven by its owner, and a friend who was a service manager at a VW dealer telling me people who knew how to fix them would never be looking for a job. Also the fact that nothing is engineered well. Replacing a battery on my Honda is a 2min job. On a VW/Audi, it's at least half an hr. Only good if your service is included when buying.

Keep in mind we get different cars here than you do over there, too. Ford only recently started importing its decent European models to the US.

i had a thought the other day about the attitude difference between Europeans and Americans about cars. in America, a car is a necessity, not a luxury--we need them from the day we leave school to the day we retire. it's either get to work in our personal car, call a friend/relative to drive us, or call in sick. there's no public transport to a lot of places in America, walking/biking is completely out of the question since everything's so far apart, and taking a taxi to and from work is too expensive.

in America, the only people without cars are the unemployed and a minority of people who live in big cities. many of us consider cars as appliances because, by definition, it is an appliance for us. we have to use it to get something done (go anywhere, basically), and thus we consider any downtime a huge drawback. but if i was working at home, it'd be completely different.

and the reliability of different makes of cars goes far beyond anecdotal evidence:

The 100 most reliable cars of the last decade (data compiled by independent warranty company)

Audi A4 v Toyota Camry comparison from TrueDelta

as for the car hunt, the Honda Fit is on stand-by. i've become enamored with Subarus. Symmetrical AWD with Boxer engine... mmmm... (but the Impreza is #28 on that "most reliable cars of past decade" list, but looks good on TrueDelta, so i'm conflicted...)

all the BMW and Audi talk was exclusively about used cars. but i chose to go another way for some other reasons.

anyway, it's weird. i've agonized so much over putting a few hundred bucks onto a poker site (and still am, actually), but when buying a car it's like, "oh, $500 for rubber floor mats? suuuure. $1500 for a spoiler that does nothing at all? gotta have it!" need to lock this down.

lol. it's still a really nice car.

probably new car. something in the 18-20K range. any BMW's will be too old for my comfort in that price range. i'm looking at new Subaru's now, but those are too expensive. new 2012 Honda Fit is perfect tho.

but i dunno, i'm super tempted to just buy a 8K car and put the rest of the money away. but my aunt wants me to have a new car... [yeah Tuneman i know, white people problems Poke Tongue]

Audi A4 #30

yeah, not bad. Subara Impreza is #28. and upon further inspection... #91 Toyota Corolla. wtf?!

I like my VW Passat. It's a 2004 and has a little over 100k miles so it's been reliable. Not very expensive and it's a fun car to drive. Worth considering imo.

FWIW, I bought a used car from a rental-car company. Car was 2 years old and had approx 30k on it, but if you are a low-mileage driver like we are, who cares? It was approximately 1/3 cheaper than new, had a decent warranty, and other than the year-old-dessicated-tv-dinner-remains-under-the-passenger-seat(!!!!!), we've had absolutely no problems with it. Can't remember whether it was hertz or enterprise...

With a rental car, you are lowering your 'variance' a bit - a rental will have had hundreds of different drivers, so you are pretty much guaranteed to get a car in "average" shape.
