this is fine if the $800 doesnt mean that much to you, but this sub optimal strategy really just makes you a passive recreational fish....maybe fish not so much but passive recreational prey for the overolled or sufficiently rolled regs, and doesnt allow you to exploit the real fish...

Totally agree with this. But if you are playing and enjoying yourself then that's completely fine.

In the future, I want to play live for a good fraction of my poker time, so I am looking to get my feet wet playing a very basic, tight style while I am still at the lowest stakes. Right now is more just me getting to a point where I don't feel out of place at a physical poker table, and also developing the additional discipline and patience required in a live game playing so many fewer hands. I went to a home game just a few days ago and it still felt strange to be honest; I want to get enough play in that I feel I am totally in my element.
