I'm a serious noob here and only get out 2-3 times a month to our local places. 1/2 NL, my buy in is $200 to prevent starting out short stacked with $1,000 as my total bankroll. Although realistically, I'd never go past 1/2 of that ($500) in one session. Being a total amateur, the two times I lost the whole initial buy in, called it a bad day and got the hell out of there. Worst loss was $400 in Vegas, best day has been up $850 at Delaware Park. I'll let the experts chime in now but that's just my experience.

Are you a Tennessee fan who lives near Delaware? In addition, are you me?

It totally depends on your living situation. I used to play live a lot with basically no roll because I had a job. It was more like a recreational thing. If I lost I would just play again after I got paid. If I won, I would usually spend the money on something non poker related.
If you want to be sure you never have to dip into not poker funds then you need a rather substantial roll, at least 20 buy ins, maybe more.
If you're good, theoretically the downswings will be less than online because your edge over the field will be greater.
HOWEVER, be aware that you can still run bad for say, 10k hands, like you can online, and that takes a very long time playing live. At 30 hands an hour, if you're playing 20 hours a week, that's 16 weeks of run bad. Yikes.

You need a lot more than you think you do.
Totally this, there's just a TON of misinformation out there about required roll for live poker. Depending on skill level I think 3k minimum should be good for 1/2.

I've played under rolled (1k-2kish), and I've played over rolled (8k+). I've gone on at least two 7bi downswings being over rolled. However, I've only ran bad once on the short roll, it preceded a 6 month break from poker. Coincidence? I don't think so.......

Yes. My point was a little wayward....What I was saying is that I was and am perfectly ok dealing with the negative variance when I'm over-rolled. It's much easier to go back the next day and play. However when I was under-rolled it was just so much harder to deal with. Sorry to be so confusing.

I understood what you were getting at and I quite agree.

I'm in the same boat as a few others in this thread, I don't have 3K sitting around for a live roll, but would still like to play live a few times a month because I genuinely enjoy it.
My live roll is only like $800 right now, and because of that, yes, I certainly do play tighter than optimal, but despite only being a little better than breakeven, I am just happy learning tidbits here and there. Sometimes I think if I were to win a couple thousand from an online MTT, I would love to cashout a chunk for my live roll so I feel comfortable enough to play my A game 100% of the time.

this is fine if the $800 doesnt mean that much to you, but this sub optimal strategy really just makes you a passive recreational fish....maybe fish not so much but passive recreational prey for the overolled or sufficiently rolled regs, and doesnt allow you to exploit the real fish...
no offense intended...
