Villain unknown, 15 hands and hasn't shown any down. Has called a few pfr's. Biggest stack at the table w/ like 700.
Hero new to the table but won a few small pots w/out showdown.
Hero mp raises to 12 gets Btn and bb call.
Flop a22 rainbow. Checks around.
Turn offsuit 3 (35) checks to Btn who bets 10, bb fold, hero call.
River 8 (55) hero bets 60, villain shoves?
Am I making a mistake by not betting the flop and turn?

By the river, you're never getting away. You'll never avoid a cooler boat vs. quads at low live limit games.
That said, you could have taken an aggressive line on either the flop or turn. This may have saved you money because the dude /w quads may have raised and let you fold. But, he could have slow played and you may have seen the river anyway. Largely, this 'what if' discussion isn't useful.
What you should be asking is if your line with check flop, check/call turn is the most +EV or if there was a better way to play it. The fact that you binked the river against quads is completely irrelevant.

I think you should be c-betting here almost always. By playing the flop differently you probably save your stack.
No way does he save his stack if he cbets. Villain probably calls, goes x/x on the turn and the 8 still hits the river and OP goes busto. Only way he saves his stack is by pitching it on the turn.

It would be really bad for the villian to let the turn check through after the hero c-bets the flop imo. Also, how deep are the effective stacks? OP just said villian had about $700 and was the biggest stack at the table.

I had 250ish. So a cbet is good here. At the time, both villains had seen me cb and take lots down uncontested. I thought if I check the flop, I can call a bet from Btn who will try to buy it. I just don't see many hands that are worse than mine that call a flop bet other than 33-77 and I think those make up such a small part of my range. I wanted to pot control and let one of them bluff at it.
