Getting raised by a perceived weak range, but holding nothing

As I try to get better at poker and raise my level of play, this is a spot that I am starting to encounter where I often feel like I ended up spewing or just playing badly.

5/T on Cake, 5 handed
Villain is a bad weird LAG, no hud so no specific stats. I had started to establish a pretty reliable read that when villain raised the flop hu ip, it was almost always a draw or weak made hand while he almost always waited till the turn with strong made hands.

Hero is SB with JSpade TClub
fold, fold, villain open limps the button, Hero raises, BB folds, Button calls.

Flop (2 players, 5 sb): 7Spade AClub 5Diamond
Hero bets, Villain raises...

At this point I feel like I shouldnt give up on the hand given the read I have. Am I trying to hard here? Even if I perceive his range as weak and he does hold a hand like 5x, is it ambitious to think I can get him to fold it on a later street? Can I peel just trying to hit a pair getting 9:1? Can I peel planning on semi bluffing an 8 or 9? Or should I just say g'day sir and move on?

i may just call pre, its kinda hard to price BB out with a ton of hands. I mean a raise is fine. if he is lag i would c/c flop and re-eval turn. betting this flop is much better against a tight ot weak player imo. not against someone who doesnt care if an ace is on the flop.

I don't hate a 3 bet + turn barrel. I would give up on river though probably.

you should call down because you beat all his draws and have 6 outs vs his made hands.

meh I'd probably call and c/r turn, barrel river, but I guess those two are fairly close.

Regardless of the turn card? Or are we looking to pick up a little equity or pick of some more fold equity, say a K (which does both in this case)?

I'd be more inclined to c/c twice if I turn a T/J I think. Turned 6s and 8s I'd probably c/c as well looking to c/f river UI.

Kinda close because it's definitely unbalanced but if he's a weird bad LAG I'm just looking to play as exploitatively as possible.

I would probably call flop and fold unimproved unless I hit an 8 or 9. I never take an aggressive line here and bluff, assuming no one ever folds a seven and opponents could definitely have an ace. Am I missing value not considering raising at some point in this hand?

My first reaction was just fold.

My second reaction was bet3bet flop if we're going to bluff at it.

Both reactions seem gross but it just seems like a spot where whenever I go into 'win pot' mode I get shown some pair that won't fold, or some lol-ace.

I think dry ace high boards are one spot fish make bad folds all the time. They raise to "find out where they're at", you tell them where they're at, they believe you.

Depending on the fish, it can get REALLY expensive to try to outbluff them here. If he's on a draw, and is as loose/bad as you say, you're going to have to 3 bet the flop AND barrel turn & river to get him to fold when his draw busts. If a card that connects with his hand comes in (in this case, a 6 or 8) you may have to c/f, or if you barrel anyways and he still looks you up and sees that you're FOS, this will only encourage him to get wild vs. you in the future.

You have a good read here that he's either on a draw or a weak made hand (2nd or 3rd pair). I'd call his flop raise and own him with a check/raise when you pair your jack or ten on the turn. That will take the wind out of his sails.

Other than that, my typical strategy is to tighten my isolating range to hands with showdown value that can stand some heat, like strong aces or kings and pocket pairs. He will likely not adjust to this and hopefully you can score some money off him vs his future shenanigans.

In this particular hand, given your read and low SD value of your hand (JT), I would just complete the small blind keeping the pot small and making a c/f not a big loser even if you are folding the best hand.

As played, on the turn I would c/r a 9, T or J and bet river unless a 6 or 8 hits since you may be able to push him off his draws or any K-hi, Q-hi type hands. 6 and 8's hit his range too hard, and yes, I think it's too ambitious to think you will get this fish to fold a pear.

why are we in the mindset that we need to rebluff him? our hand has enough sd value to call down.

Meh I'm thinking basically like DD - there are lots of bad players who are capable of playing a hand like 65s like this. I'm just not sure there's enough air (I do think it's close) to just call down. All 3 options seem pretty reasonable to me here, but I'm just saying that if/when I bluff, it's gonna be call flop c/r turn bet river depending on the cards that fall.

That may be true, but regardless, I don't have the stones to call down jack high for its showdown value. Smile

Despite the fact that I argued for a re-bluff, I can't agree with this. Honestly you just gotta get over it. Do you know how many times I've called with jack high and got shown a set, or worse, a king high? It's embarrassing and awesome at the same time!
