I think I made a pretty big mistake in this hand calling the flop, especially against someone so passive, even against draws I'm probably even money. I just feel like its so weak folding to the donk bet on the flop. I feel like if I do I'm opening the door for the LAGs at the table to start taking shots with donk bets. How to I protect myself from that? Am I just overanalyzing here?
Yeah, don't call the flop if you're planning to fold the turn and river unimproved, unless you have specific reasons to believe that the opponent isn't 3-barreling. That said, 9 is a good turn card to fold on even if you were planning to go to showdown.
But in this spot you don't have to worry about any two card bluffs, because they aren't profitable for SB, because both of you aren't going to fold on the flop often enough. If you were heads-up and got donked and didn't want to be exploited, you should just enumerate your own range and count the combinations of the hands on the given board texture and find the portion that you can fold.
I actually dont think this is too bad.
9 is a bad turn card. Just about any draw he had either paired or hit.
QJ, Q9, J9 etc.
Jajvirta- SB seems really bad, I think draws make up a big part of his range. I dont really understand the 2nd part of your post. Are you calling down here? cheers
My reply was confusing. First, I think the combination of calling the flop and folding to that particular card is fine. It's just that you're always facing a turn bet and most often a river bet too so the price of the call down is relatively high. OP was worried about being being exploited in such situations and in this regard it's not a problem that you fold your eights, because you have excess of stronger hands in your range.
That makes a lot of sense guys, thanks for that. The only reason I really hate my flop call is the guys playing style. He was pretty bad but I just dont think that theres much in his donking range that I am ahead of. It's probably even fine for me to show to the LAGs at the table that I can fold to a flop donk because most of the time it wont be profitable against my range on this kind of flop.
Although I should take more notice of this myself. I think it is very important to note what loose passives will donk the flop with into a pre flop raiser. Some of them will only donk draws and check call with made hands, and some only donk made hands and will check call draws. You have 200 hands on villain so unless you are multi tabling and only using stats (a very common situation) then you should have some idea of what his flop donks mean.
