After starting the year at mid/high stakes 6max, I began to focus on HU primarily in March. HU allowed me to focus a lot more on some of the (to me) more interesting aspects of the game because hand ranges are expanded so much and a lot more creativity can be used. I still play 6max as well, and have moved up to to 10/20 and the occasional 25/50 game. I have earned six figures so far this year, the brunt of which has come in these last couple months, and I consider myself one of the better regs in the 5/10 and 10/20 games, both 6max and HU.
I play a somewhat unorthodox style in both HU and 6max, because I find that it allows me to utilize my biggest strength, which is strategical adjustment and counter-adjustment. I used to say that I focused on theory, but I think it is more accurate to say that I focus on big picture strategy. My goal with students is to help them understand their own style, rather than to try to get them to change to some ideal style. This entails understanding what your range is in various spots, what your opponents may try to do to exploit this and what lines you can utilize to most efficiently balance your range, leveraging your strong hands without bleeding too much with your weak hands or spewing too much with your bluffs.
I find that the best way to let a student learn is to watch videos. Sweating is an effective alternative, but being able to get a better feel for a student's playing style without me watching is better. In this regard, I am more of a "hands off coach" - I want to teach a student how to better make decisions at the poker table, rather than what specific action to take in a specific spot. Using videos allows me to watch a session (commentary might help but is not necessary by any means) and review the entirety based on how a student plays, without having to interrupt play to get information or discuss a specific topic.
"xorbie probably had the most impact on my game, just because before [our coaching] I was kind of an unthinking tagbot, and he helped me to start actually thinking about stuff when I play." Life, 2p2er
"Coaching is very important and I feel that every player should take advantage of it. I look at coaching the same way as reading over a paper you have just written for school. Since you wrote it, you will probably not find any mistakes but a simple look over by someone who is smarter then you in the subject will find numerous errors. There is absolutely no reason not to hire a coach that is better then you. You will learn things so much faster in a couple of sessions that would take you weeks or even months to learn by yourself.
I have been playing poker for years now and have had many coaches. I can say with sincere honestly that Xorbie is by far the best coach I have ever had. Not only was he the most knowledgeable but was there for me when ever I needed him and very helpful. These are very important characteristics of a coach and Xorbie possesses them all. He will talk to you about hands upon request, very easy to get a hold of, and is open about trying different ways to do sessions. We did everything from him sweating me/me sweating him to sending videos of each other playing and talking strategy. I tried to beat 400 no-limit by myself over the past year or so with out any luck. With Xorbie’s help I was able to crush the game in just a couple of months and still am today. I recommend Xorbie to anyone who wants to improve their game. He is well worth the investment." "Before i even hired xorbie as a teacher, he stayed up all night sweating and cheering for me at a big tournament in which I got a pretty decent score( 10k$+). He managed to give me some tips on calling and pushing ranges, even though he doesn't regularly play tournaments. Anyways I started out as a 400nl player wanting to beat the midstakes games. I am now playing 5/10 and 10/20 and taking shots at 25/50 when a good spot is available. I can't really remember how I thought about poker back then, but thing is that I make 3-4times the money I did back then, I think xorbie helped me accomplish that along with intensively studying the game. He had a lot of high-flown(in a good way I think) theory stuff that I can hardly grasp. But whenever I open my txt document(I saved all our lessons in a special document)and read all that stuff about reverse balancing poker seems to become a bit easier yet at the same time so much harder.
He always was available and friendly when answering questions regarding hands." Anonymous
