Q. Why do you coach? A. It is extremely rewarding to be able to help other people make a lot of money at this game. And to attempt to help them overcome psychological stumbling points that destroy bankrolls and set back a lot of players with tremendous talent, sometimes irreparably.

Do I sometimes feel like I'm making the games tougher by improving the player pool? Yes, but as long as you're able to think correctly about the game and play your best as often as possible, that isn't as big an issue as people believe. At the same time, coaching helps me improve my own game by training my mind to give pause and think twice before making what used to be unconscious, gut decisions. It's important that every now and then you go back and make sure that your instincts aren't just founded on good results, but sound logic as well.

Q. Why has it taken so long for you to enter the video market? A. To be honest, I was just never really interested in making videos. I enjoy watching my students reap the rewards of one-on-one coaching, so mass educating people where I couldn't monitor their progress didn't necessarily appeal to me. I also do a lot of things that other players don't (for better and for worse) and didn't want to key my opponents in to my style of thinking.

But in the video series format, I'm able to flex my creative muscles and really cook up some things that are going to keep viewers very entertained and also educate them. It's a multimedia age and there's no reason we can't make learning this crazy game more fun and feel less like going to school!

Q. Describe the best hand you've ever played. A. I've made some crazy hero calls. I remember one nasty Jack high call on an A69KK board I made in Monte Carlo while danzasmack was sitting next to me, watching and wincing.

But off the top of my head, there's one hand I should acknowledge. It was a $120k pot against durrrr, by far the largest pot I had ever played at the time, right when I was moving up through 50/100 NL and higher. We were playing an insane match at 100/200 NL across 4 tables and I'd been reraising him a ton. So 60k deep I repopped 35ss and flopped an open-ender. I bet; he calls. I double-barrel semi-bluff the offsuit King turn, and he thinks and calls. The river is an ace giving me the nuts (and unbeknownst to me, making him two pair). Overbetting all-in crosses my mind, and I'm debating betting pot and check-raising too--but I know if I'm going to overbet I need to do it quickly because of various timing factors. So I just go for the glory and jam, and he calls quick. Man, winning that pot was awesome, and it gave me the confidence and momentum to move up through 200/400 and maintain a long run at the nosebleed stakes.
