Hi,
My name is IWEARGOGGLES, and I'm an MTT addict. Some wise internet-nerd once said on the forums that "you don't choose MTTs, they choose you." There have been a few times I've tried to quit MTTs, but I always come crawling back. I am one of those typical stories, one deposit, ran really hot, never went bust. But that initial run gave me confidence and the thirst to learn to play poker well. I've put a lot of work into improving, and I think that is reflected in my relatively consistent results (in the MTT world consistent is a strange word).
I've played ~7,000 tournaments on Stars and FTP, and with an average buyin of ~$270 I've maintained a 45% ROI. That comes out to about $121 profit per tournament I've played over my career. I've had success live as well, outright winning my first big buyin live tournament in 2006 at Turning Stone for $187,000. I also came third at the Bellagio Cup in 2008 for $450,000. I've had multiple deep finishes in between.
As of now I am back to playing MTTs full time. I have taken a couple breaks to try my hand at online cash (both NL and PLO) and although I'm still a winner all-time at cash games, I've ran pretty terrible, as Ben86/Bttech86 would happily attest. All I can say is that I think MTTs have a hold on me (note my PLO PTR is negative but I got 3rd in the 2k WCOOP PLO for 102k and 2nd in the 500 PLO on Stars for 12k...they're trying to tell me something).
I've coached around a dozen people, and have a few active students as of writing this (with 2 about to start). My coaching style definitely isn't blackboard--I will not teach a new MTT player how to calculate pot odds and do resteal math. I simply think it is a waste of their $$ to pay me to do so; rather, I think my use comes from my experience and solid basis in tournament theory. My long term results show that I know how to adjust to the way people play. Also, I do not teach a particular style. I will not say you should be more LAG or more TAG or anything in between. I teach the situation. That is my annoyingly overused word in any given lesson. MTTs are all about knowing what is going on around you and how to adjust your ranges accordingly. IE a good resteal spot isn't always a good resteal spot, you need to note why player X is opening, your image, his image, stage of the tournament, etc. before deciding what to do. Again, I do not do blackboard lessons. A typical lesson runs 2 hours and is usually multiple hand history reviews followed by loose hands. For instance, I would ask a new student to bring multiple recent hand histories to our first lesson and we would get acquainted by reviewing them. This almost always bring up tournament philosophy and includes some mini-rants. To some I imagine this sounds either chaotic or boring, but I'm sure people would attest that I can rant with the best of them.
If you want a sample of my monotone voice, you can check out any of my videos on here or call me at 867-5309 (ask for Jenny).
Here are a screenshot of my results at Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars.
Beginning students should expect to purchase 5 hours up front.
"Luke and I have been discussing poker together for years. He is one of the most experienced, knowledgable, and skilled tournament players in the world. To me, Luke's greatest skill is his ability to play well in the wide variety of scenarios encountered in an MTT. He can get the maximum from a fish and understand exactly how the fish is thinking, but also adjust his play properly against all of the different types of regulars. He knows when to make his VPIP 50%, or when it's time to make it 10%, and perhaps most importantly I've never seen him lose his patience or make a significant ICM mistake." -Ben86/Bttech86/Ben Tollerene
"Luke’s coaching has been great for my game. I have been working with him for ~1.5 years and have moved from low-mid stakes MTTs to HSMTTs with his help. He is able to accurately assign ranges & suggest strategies at each buyin level I’ve played. Luke has always been easy to work with as well; the consummate professional regarding scheduling & availability for coaching sessions. He also reviews many of my hands throughout the week. If you are a serious MTT player wanting to increase your skills & EV I recommend you retain Luke’s services."- Anonymous
