I am a 24 year old living in Scottsdale, Arizona and have been a professional poker player for over 6 years. I was Valedictorian of my high school and graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Arizona in May 2008 with a dual degree in Marketing and Entrepreneurship.

Like many successful players, I started by depositing the minimum $50 on PartyPoker. Throughout 2005-06, I crushed 3/6=10/20 NL 6-max with an extremely aggressive postflop game that few players could adjust to correctly at the time.

Around the time the internet gambling legislation was passed, I started playing on PokerStars under the screenname Alcohol4Life. Noticing the 6-max games were toughening up, I began focusing my game on Heads-up play. By the summer of 2007, I was a 25/50NL heads up regular on Stars and have never looked back since. Because I was unable to get any HU action after a short time, I played and beat many of the best HU players on Stars. Currently, most of the hands I play are against the best players at the 10/20 and 25/50 level. I have been coaching students for over 3 years now, almost entirely through word of mouth and personal recommendations. After becoming a DC Producer in September 2008, I have coached more than 50 students, virtually all of them working w/ me for at least 10 hours. In terms of video production, I have created over 40 videos to help students improve their HU game, including co-producing the legendary Dogisheads Up series. I truly enjoy teaching and sharing my knowledge of the game with students and am able to articulate my thoughts just as well as I implement them while playing, a rare skill amongst poker players. Although well-versed in all forms of NLHE, most of my coaching revolves around helping players improve their heads-up game. I occasionally make strategy posts under the name Gman06 on 2+2.

Heads up NL poker is the most difficult to teach because it is so non-technical in nature. Given that, I strive to get my students to think like HU specialists as opposed to a memorizing a playbook which won't get you very far in tough HU matches. The hard-to-teach skills of leveling and making rapid in-game adjustments are 2 areas I often focus on with students as they often play a critical role in separating the good from the great players. As such, many of my students spend the majority of their time with me focusing on the intricate details associated with beating an opponent who is already a reasonable if not highly talented player.

Logistically, I am open to helping students through the medium of their choice, but I generally focus my sessions on 4 main areas:

1) Discussion or lecture regarding a particular topic: Here is where making the theoretically optimal play in every situation will be analyzed and then compared to making the most deceptive or most balanced play.

2) Reviewing hands: This and the first approach are often related, and often reviewing hands leads to deeper discussion about important HU concepts. When reviewing hands, I am very meticulous and help students to analyze every action on every street so my pupils completely understand not only why a particular play is best, but the pros and cons associated with taking that particular action.

3) Sweating: Although I personally do not think sweating is always the most cost-effective use of a student's time, it is nevertheless important to sweat occasionally. This is partly true as gameflow is so important in HU matches, and cannot always be correctly articulated by the student later on in a hand history. And clearly, a lot else can be learned through sweating.

4) Videos: Assuming an interest, much can also be learned from the student making a video multitabling HU. Because the video can be stopped at any time, the student is often able to get into deeper discussion than he would during a typical sweat session. Video reviews are by far the most popular option for most of my students, particularly in the first few lessons.

Although I prefer to keep my long term results private so my parents stop asking me for money (j/k Mom!), here is a graph over a couple months of my play in early 2011. The swings are minimal in the first part of the graph as I was coming off a nasty downswing and was playing more 5/10 and 10/20. Not a bad way to bounce back, right?

"I think Garrett offers one of the best values out there for mid/high stakes coaching. What makes him such a good coach is his combination of skill, ability to express himself, his very approachable and friendly personality, and his willingness to help you out in detail with questions outside of sessions. He's always around to help you in case you're wondering about a hand you played or if you're just going through a rough time and need some advice.

Garrett does a great job at not only involving you in the process but also making you feel really comfortable in talking with him, asking questions, and exploring in-depth concepts without it ever feeling too complicated, heavy, or boring. He's just a fun person to talk to and that makes coaching that much more interesting and helpful.

I've had coaches before that charged much more than him and played the highest of stakes and, in my opinion, they don't really compare to Garrett in many important aspects. He brings the whole package to the table and that's what makes him an excellent coach to have on your side. I would definitely recommend him wholeheartedly to anyone looking to improve their HU NL game." -Pascal, NL HU up to 10/20 winner: FROG INVASIONS on FTP and StakeMonster on PS

"Hiring Garrett was easily one of the best things I have ever done for my poker game. While I was already a successful high stakes 6-max player who dabbled in HU, he really took my HU game to the next level. After working with him for 30+ hours of excellent coaching and discussion, I am now confident playing all types of players up to the 50/100 level. I was able to beat fish before, but Garrett taught me how to beat regulars of all kinds while improving the edge I have on the fish. From the theory to the psychology, Garrett is an excellent poker player and coach." --PBJaxx, High Stakes NL Winner, Lead Bluefire Poker Instructor, and 2010 WSOP Main Event November 9er who was again coached by Garrett leading up to and during the final table.
