At tournament I believe you should have about 100x the buy in. But I'm a huge fish when it comes to tourneys.

When it comes to either playing tourney or cash, I believe I read a post by jaimestaples, who adviced that learning and winning at tourneys is a lot easier than at cash, since tourney is a lot more basic. Probably PM him about it.

I would just focus totally on either cash or tourney, studying and learning one of them. If you wanna go with cash, feel free to PM me anytime about questions. Or use the forums and ask about anything you wanna know. I would also recomd not watching random video series, but take one and really study it hard-understand every concept, hand or joke the coaches are trying teach.

Thanks for the advice, what size tournament buy ins would you recommend from a $300/$500 roll?

and with the studying do you mean focus on one or the other and don't play both simultaneously?

Finally with my roll do you think i would be more beneficial trying to build my roll by playing tournaments or cash games?

Thanks for the advice

don't play 50NL if your bankroll is 300$.
I would also focus on either cash or tourney in studying.
Good Luck!!

Hi,

I played 100NL on full tilt throughout my third year of uni (so about 18 months ago) at that time i was collecting the latest editions of Poker magazine and Bluff from my local casino as they give them out for free. (because i didnt have the time to invest 7-12 hours in a tournament because of my studies i focused solely on cash) i read all the articles etc about cash games as well as online blogs and just randomly googled articles about it. The biggest thing i was learning at that time was position but started to dabble with more complex plays such as back raising and the occasional 4 and 5 bets with "air". At this time i also attempted to use a HUD which i hadnt used before and started learning what the information meant and how to analyze it. i understood it vaguely but as i was playing rush poker the statistics related to the "seat" as opposed to the player so the stats were not accurate. I have not since used a HUD even now while i play 25NL and 50NL on Poker stars. (any advice on this would be appreciated, should i be using one? recommended software? how much of an impact does it have on your game). i used to record my "Rush" sesisons and would usually play 2 tables of 100NL roughly 250 - 400 hands a night. over the 8 months (Uni term time, over the summer i play mostly live) i was up about $1700 which i know isnt a lot at all for that level but for me it was roughly an extra £125 a month of income. (a lot for a student :P)

(also as an update from first post my Banroll is now $530 after a 1000 hand session last night on 50NL on "zoom poker" on stars.

What have you been studying particularly while "having a lot of success" at 100NL? Thanks for your blog. Interesting stuff.
