first post: intro, YTD

Hi all.

I’m starting my poker blog mainly as an experiment; not sure if anybody’s going to read this, but my hope is that either someone finds it interesting enough to track as I develop or that I can engender some interaction with the DC / poker community for everyone’s benefit.

I’m 25 years old; currently attending dental school full-time in San Francisco, CA. I started playing poker in college at a highly social level and only got serious after starting dental school about a year and a half ago. Last year I purchased Poker Tracker 3 and subscribed to DC. I’ve hired coaches for a few live sweats and recently gotten regularly involved on poker forums. I feel my learning has literally skyrocketed in the past 12 months, with most of that growth happening lately, proportional to the time I’ve invested watching videos, reading books, and working with other players.

This past January I bought in anew with $100 on Full Tilt to start the grind and hopefully either move up in stakes or try and learn a ton (the excuse one has for not winning). YTD, I’ve basically learned a ton :). I’ve had some solid tournament gains that were negated by my ring game losses. Between tourney, cash, and rakeback I’ve run at about -1.5PTBB/100 over 100K hands or so and captured a marginal profit due to tourney play. I “cashed out” my initial $100 (transferred it to a friend by request) so I’m able to play with profit from now on.

I decided to invest my roll in mini FTOPS, long having the urge to play some serious tournaments and extend my decent MTT streak. Aside from a few bucks in upcoming rakeback equity, I basically invested my roll in nine mini FTOPS events, including the $100+9 event #12 and the $50+5 main event. So far, I’m unfortunately 0/4 in these events, but I’m 100% happy with my play and the biggest events are yet to come.

If I happen to go busto after mini FTOPS I plan to reload a few hundred and get back to grinding at $10NL or $25NL.

I hope to post some positive updates soon as there are plenty of tournaments coming up! I’ll be on a spring break from March 18-28, so I’ll be playing quite a bit during that time if possible.

Look me up on Full Tilt as LHO2011. See you soon!

Hi LHO2011,

I used to take stabs at tournaments but the variance is too high. I spent about two years playing tournaments only and always eventually went broke, But I found out cash games is where any good player can make money. I started out on absolute poker and playing mostly 25.-.50 nlhe, I have built up my roll from 200 to just over 3k. . Now I play tournaments like a freeroll based on the money and points I earn from cash games. With all the bonuses on Absolute, I am surprised more people don't play on that site with good rake back, reload bonuses and points conversions, especially if the bad beat jackpot is high. Multitabling when the bad beat jackpot is high has nearly doubled my winnings, paying at times about $200 bonus per table if someone hits it at the level you play at.

I just started out on full tilt with 100 deposit and just crossed the 600 mark, playing .25-50 POT LIMIT holdem, which I have found to be fishier than NLHE and I play omaha8 limit occasionally.

Let me know if you would like to share more experiences, but consider trying what I do, play the cash games to build your roll and then play tournaments out of your winnings.

Jeff
