On a downward slope......

Ok, so its fair to say that my challenge hasnt been going that great. A combination of what seems to be a bad case of "run-bad" and me not playing at my best has seen my bankroll cut in half. I have mainly been playing $1-$2 tournys with a couple of exceptions due to the fact that Pokerstars were holding their Micro Millions. Apart from a couple of small cashes theres not been much to write home about. However i did make a final table in a PLO tourny and ended up 8th out of 380 runners for $27.

i've had a few sessions of 0.02/0.05 cash but have only managed 2 winning sessions. As it stands after 1339 hands i am -$28.04. having done a database review i have noticed that i am losing far too much money from the small blind, so i have been trying to tighten up in that area. Ive tried to limit my decision to either folding or 3betting instead of just calling, and this seems to be having a positive affect.

ive also noticed that i seem more vulnerable when i have 150-250BB. to combat this ive tried to tighten up when i have a big stack rather than trying to be overly aggressive and too active.

1 hand that id like to share is from a recent 5NL session that i played.

Hero (SB): $22.96
BB: $14.81

CO: $2.86
BTN: $3.81

Pre Flop: ($0.07) Hero is SB with 3 of spades 3 of hearts
UTG raises to $0.20, CO calls $0.20, 1 fold, Hero calls $0.18, BB raises to $2.65, 2 folds, Hero calls $2.45

Flop: ($5.70) 3 of clubs 7 of diamonds T of clubs(2 players)
Hero checks, BB bets $5.00, Hero raises to $20.31, BB calls $7.16 all in

Turn: ($30.02) T of diamonds(2 players - 1 is all in)

River: ($30.02) T of spades(2 players - 1 is all in)

Final Pot: $30.02
Hero shows 3 of spades 3 of hearts
BB shows Q of spades Q of clubs
BB wins $29.02
(Rake: $1.00)

the opponent was a fairly standard TAG 15/5/3 and i had seen him be very agressive with top pair top kicker and an over pair. When he 3bets so large i put his range at A-K and 10-10+, slightly more weighted to A-K as it seemed like he just wanted to end it there and then. I was clearly not getting the correct odds to call, but i felt that i had decent implied odds to set-mine given that i was fairly confident he would stack off with and overpair or an ace. as it turns out i was righ as he stacked off with queens but somehow sucked out on me (i told you i was running bad). what do you think of my play? should i have just folded pre-flop?

any comments and thoughts are welcomed

$200-$20k Challenge

Having come to the conclusion that my poker game has been lacking discipline and some set goals I have decided to set myself a challenge. I've given myself a $200 bankroll with the aim of turning it into $20k. All action will take place at Pokerstars. I've not set any time scale on it, as its clearly a long term challenge. I have however set a few rules that i must abide to. They are as follows:

1. Starting stakes are 0.02/0.05c and $2 tournaments. (the only exception being the Sunday Storm)

2. I can only move up in stakes when my bankroll reaches $400. i can then play 0.05/0.10c and $5 tournaments.

3. Each time my bankroll increases by $200 i can move to the next stakes, but must return to the previous level if i drop below the required bankroll level.

4. i must write atleast one blog every week.

5. at the end of each week i must do a database review and analyse my play.

im hoping that these rules will ensure that i stick to the challenge and have enough motivation despite the low stakes i will be playing.

Having started the challenge on Tuesday i proceeded to have two losing days having mainly played 6-max hold'em and a few MTT's. I felt that i played reletively well however never managed to get paid with my big hands and losing a few coin flips.

today i decided to play some PLO as i feel i have a big edge at these stakes. The only downside to playing PLO is that i cant record any hands on Holdem Manager. As well as recording my first winning session in cash, i also cashed for the first time in a $2 6-max MTT. Out of 4095 runners i managed to finish 131st for a $9.41 payday!

The hand i busted with was an interesting situation which i thought id share.

With the blinds at 2k/4k (500 ante) i raised to 8.8k with A-6 spades from UTG+1. i started the hand with 55k and the only caller was the BB who was sitting with 250k. the flop was Q-Q-6 with two diamonds. He imediately shoved 152k in the middle, putting me all-in. I had only been at the table for 29 hands and he had the following stats:

VPIP: 34

PFR: 17

3B:8

AF:5

My gut instinct was that he never has a Queen in this spot. id expect him to 3bet good Queens and fold any Q-x type hand, even with the odds he's getting. he also is losing out on so much value if i have no hand as i can just fold, so id expect him to check-raise, or maybe even check-call if he has queen. id also expect him to 3bet with any pair, so everything led me to my initial thought that he was just shoving a flush draw. therefore i decided to call and he turned over A-J of diamonds for the aforementioned flush draw. the turn and river were both diamonds and i busted.

the question i ask is even if im 100% certain that he has a flush draw, should i call? Im about 52% to win the hand and 114k which would have given me an above average stack with 130ish players left.

i would welcome anyones thought about the hand and how they would have played it and any general thoughts on the situation.

my personal reasons for calling were as followed:

1. i was very certain i had the best hand (as explained above)

2. i had the chance to win 114k as a 52% favourite

3. i would have been happy to flip 50/50 preflop with A-K, A-Q and 7-7+ so why not in this spot?

4. with the payout being so top heavy i felt i needed a big stack to have the best chance of winning and this was a good spot to win that stack.

As it turned out i made the right play but didnt get the result i wanted. this seems to be a re-occuring situation at present and has been affecting my confidence when getting deep into MTT's. However, im always happy to get my chips in with the best hand regardless of the outcome so i try not to get to disillusioned.

I will leave it as that for my first post. i will try and update this as often as possible.

Day3: Bankroll = $158.57

running worse than a one-legged horse

Currently it feels as though i am unable to drag myself from a terrible downswing, that is affecting my bankroll and confidence. I feel like i am playing good and making correct decisions but my mental approach seems so negative due to constant bad beats and being on the wrong end of endless coolers.

my most recent session involved the two following hands:

Poker Stars $0.25/$0.50 No Limit Hold'em - 2 players - View hand 1380551
DeucesCracked Poker Videos Hand History Converter

BTN/SB: $53.00

Pre Flop: ($0.75) Hero is BB with T of diamonds 8 of diamonds
BTN/SB raises to $1.50, Hero raises to $4, BTN/SB raises to $10, Hero calls $6

Flop: ($20.00) 6 of diamonds 9 of diamonds Q of diamonds(2 players)
Hero checks, BTN/SB checks

Turn: ($20.00) 6 of spades(2 players)
Hero bets $12, BTN/SB calls $12

River: ($44.00) 8 of hearts(2 players)
Hero bets $26.10 all in, BTN/SB calls $26.10

Final Pot: $96.20
BTN/SB shows A of diamonds K of diamonds (a flush, Ace high)
Hero shows T of diamonds 8 of diamonds (a flush, Queen high)
BTN/SB wins $95.70
(Rake: $0.50)

followed by:

Poker Stars $0.25/$0.50 No Limit Hold'em - 2 players - View hand 1380552

BTN/SB: $107.55
Hero (BB): $22.60

Pre Flop: ($0.75) Hero is BB with 8 of spades 9 of clubs
BTN/SB raises to $1.50, Hero calls $1

Flop: ($3.00) 5 of hearts 9 of diamonds 8 of hearts(2 players)
Hero checks, BTN/SB bets $2, Hero raises to $7, BTN/SB raises to $54.50, Hero calls $14.10 all in

Turn: ($45.20) 4 of hearts(2 players - 1 is all in)

River: ($45.20) 6 of clubs(2 players - 1 is all in)

Final Pot: $45.20
BTN/SB shows 7 of clubs 9 of hearts (a straight, Five to Nine)
Hero shows 8 of spades 9 of clubs (two pair, Nines and Eights)
BTN/SB wins $44.70
(Rake: $0.50)

on review, i feel that i made correct decisions throughout both hands but the poker gods have conspired against me on both occasions. does anyone disagree? did i play either hand badly or make poor decisions? any thoughts are welcomed.

anyway, i suppose i should quit with the moaning and get back to running worse than a one-legged horse.

see you at the tables

intro

hi there and welcome to my new blog. i thought i would start it with a little intro about myself just so you guys know what you've let yourselves in for.

im 27 and live in North West London, UK and have been playing poker for 6 years, although only seriously for the past 3. i play both online and live. i vastly prefer playing live as i feel it suits my game better, but online is more widely available and convinient.

i mainly play NLHE and PLO, although i have recently started experimenting in Razz and some mix games. i generally play either  full ring or head up, but am working on my 6-max game. you will mainly find me on Full Tilt but occasionally i will stray to Pokerstars, my screenname on both is "snowmandoman".

anyway, thats enough about me for now. i hope you will find my blogs both interesting and informative and i welcome any questions, feedback or critisism so please get in touch.
