I empathize with addiction to certain Websites like you list (facebook, twitter, etc.), but if you manage to delete them you realize how ridiculous they were. After a short while you just forget about them (like they don't exist) and realize life goes on - if friends need to contact you there is always phone/email.

Stackhunter: The question i nowadays try to ask myself are: What does my heart say? (this sounds corney but it important, what feels right a lot of the time is right), and... the second question is: What will be the decision that I can benefit from in the long run? (poker lesson all the way) .. The answers combined to those questions seems to help me. Because the answer becomes analytical and how I feel about things :)

Awesome post snappie, and you to Mati.

I'm myself in a similar spot, not really feeling the game the past few months, and the firm I worked for went from 30 - 6 workers within a year and a half, so I just got the boot to, and decided to start a new career as a salesman.
I'm glad for the training process poker has given me, as I can apply it in my new endeavors too. I bought some audio books, watched YouTube vids, and taking notes all the time :)

But when the family is a sleep, and I used to play poker, I don't know what to do, can't watch and listen to sales stuff all the time, so as you snappie, there's a huge gap, I feel kinda (this is sad but) empty, like I've spent soooo much time with this game, and forgot to have other things, eventhough all the coaches always said, remember to have other things on you life.
So I'm hoping to find another hobby soon too.

Good luck to both of you.

Hi Snappie,
I have just seen your blog and read everything (took me over 30 mins, lol)the last 2 posts are absolutely fantastic. I am in a similar situation at the moment. I am a 22 year old student, finishing his engineer degree and looking for a 1.5 month traineeship in this summer (without it I can't finish my degree).

Three days ago I had a meeting with my good friend from secondary school. He moved out of there to the capital of my country and he works there as a programist. He has some basic experience in job searching and he told me that expierience is ultra important. He said that this is 'my last chance' to fill my CV with some new workplaces.

Besides doing a traineeship he advised me to look for another job during my last 7th semester. That means I would have to work and study at the same time. That also means I would have to give up poker...My 2nd biggest hobby after cars. Something I dedicated a huge chunk of my life. A passion that gave me so much fun. A beautiful game that helped me to make some money and as a result fullfil my dream - buy my first car, a BMW.

One side of my (probably my heart mostly) tells me I can't leave poker. It is my source of income and opportunities. It is a chance for buying a better car and everything I need. A big financial help. Something that shouldn't be left after putting in 4 years of huge effort. I am back at 100NL, learning poker really hard with a decent help from MagisterLudi - a player that became my inspiration (similar to Grindcore's style, 4-tabling and playing for winrate, no bonus whoring). I am a much better player now than I was one year ago, during 200NL shot (got raped there, but made a shitload of mistakes). I would like to get back to 200NL and show my real skill...

The other part of me (my brain) has some serious arguments.
a) The future of poker is in danger. Black Friday, USA is out of the game. First blood. Some new regulations and France+Italy have been separated. Double kill. Spain as well. Killing spree. Stupid regulations in Poland, treating poker as a game of luck, making it close to impossible to play this game legally in this country. Boom headshot.
And poker is getting tougher and tougher every year. Tfu, every single month. GOD LIKE!
Beating 100NL for 10 bb/100 is now very hard, if you are not really good.
b) This is the way to get a good job. I'd love to work for BMW or maybe as a trader, though here I'd have to learn everything from scratch.

So now I am facing probably one of the biggest decisions in my life.

I agree. Balance is important. I keep sport and I keep my healthy way of living. I have my friends and family and girlfriend.

The older I get, the more I realise that 'less is more'.

Thanks for the kind words man. I like DC way to much to 'never post again' :)

Snappie- No matter what, good luck. The one thing I can tell you, however, is that places like DC serve both as a wonderful distraction, and a healthy balance. The more I've progressed in life, the more I've realized that balance is about as important as it gets. You can throw yourself in to your work, but you'll miss your exercise, your poker, whatever. So maybe you won't be here as much, but it will remain something that gives you some stability in a time of change, and a chance to discuss things other than your job. GL!

"Life is a grind. For every moment of succes, there are so many hours of sickening, boring hard work."

Well, in poker, you are up against other players, with the reality that if they work harder than you do, probably you will not be lucky enough to win against them in the long run. So IMO getting better at poker is a grind.

But, in life, IMO you are up against yourself. Not against your father, or your best friend, or the most recent famous person. And it is not possible for you to work harder or not compared to yourself. You just have to be very honest, and consistent, and remember that nobody will remember you for what you did for yourself, they will only remember you for what you did for others.

So writing a blog is good. It is not for yourself, it is for others. Thanks, and good luck.

And don't be so hard on yourself, Baluga spent a year and a half or so at 25NL, (thats what I use to still have motivation while im stuck at the micros :))

haha May, I have had my doubts about that too.

Then again, if it has always been an issue, I am doing something wrong. I can try to re-invent the weel over and over, or listen to the experts.

If something is not working the way you have been doing it, stop doing it, become aware and start learning.

Reading the book is like reading a book about myself. The reasons for procrastination, the thought process before entering a task... Lots of things in the book that gave me lots of aha moments.

I am working harder for school now then ever, and it doesn't even like I have to do much. If that makes sense.

@Kerwinty: Yes i did the yin yang series. Showed me a bit how good Inavacuum probably is as a coach

I can't agree more. Its also learning the wrong things for your stakes, while not having build that foundation.

Everything is build on that solid foundation. So if the foundation is shaky, your never going to make a house that will last a big storm

And if there is a lot of storm, your very lucky to still have a bit of a standing house.

hey snap, writing just before i head to SK... id like to say man, wow, great blog post, i see some stuff in there too i relate to. i think that the ealry part of the book talks about the 'range' of your skills. We spend so much time learning new skills, new skills, new skills, without getting ONE skill down to the UC (unconscious competence) level that our 'range' of play from A-game to C-game is really wide, and when we look back at it we are like, wtf i cant believe how stupid i played because logically I know this. What this is telling us that we havent got our learned skills to the point of UC, we are still able to make those skills play when we are in A-game (aka Conscious Competence), but when we tilt all that goes out of the window, so the spread in our range from UC to CC to CI to UI is MASSIVE. SO in essence I think you are tottally right for going back to basics and focusing on ONE THING, until it is totally UC level.

Interestingly, there is a coach called TRD23 who spoke about this a lot, focusing on ONE LEARNING skill at a time. I found out about this in 2009 but never really applied it properly, so he was definately on to something HUGE. I made a blog post about it http://www.deucescracked.com/blogs/acombfosho/707-My-current-learning-focus-quitting-well and I still struggle with it! Shows how far the 'range spread' can get between UC CC CI and UI..

Good luck and speak to u as soon as im set up over in SK

I read your post and thought that it could have been me writing this. Especially the parts about not moving up in stakes for ages and learning everything while nothing seems to get to the unconscious competence level.
I got "The mental game of poker" last Tuesday and I´m reading it since then. Allthough I brought it to fix some motivational issues I think there may also be some fear/confidence problems (and some little tilt issues^^).
Good luck!
