I'll play you HU on Full Tilt. Oh...right.

It's a good thing black friday happened or else you wouldn't be this good. You'd have spent too much time coaching me, getting frustrated with my lack of progress, and not getting better yourself.

So yea. You owe all of this to Howard Lederer.

I quit but I presume he'll play again, he's lost a lot more back in the day vs Hoss and people so prob not enough to phase him.

There's no one I wouldn't play I don't think, at least none that I've played yet. It wasn't long ago though when the two people I wouldn't always play were capoch and oogee, because they were so high var, but my game improved a lot since playing them more.

Yeah, a 50BB swing is quite common, just wasn't making any hands yet but I knew as soon as that changed I would take him for a lot.

Yeah I meant early in terms of stack depth, because I see no reason to do it when limits are small, but there might be an argument for variance reduction later on, though I'm not even sure about that because you never take it down pre and allow weaker hands to come in OTB and in the SB and the BB to see a draw for free.

It was toward the end of day 2, but in early position if that is what you meant.

It wasn't that aggro of a table even though it was me, him, Greg Raymer, Jason Mercier, and Galen Hall (huge TD fish btw). Mercier 3b a lot out of the blinds, but he ran good enough to jam anything pretty much :)

Open limping? Was it early on?

He must have figured people weren't good enough to exploit him doing so. I think it's a definitely leak though because I think in TD people will just attack weakness like that a lot, plus there is just so much value in taking down blinds.

I believe we are all capable of things we never imagined. I never thought I could make it this far, to play these stakes, to make the amount that I do, but I worked at it, and I got here. Don't ever settle for mediocrity, don't ever be content being less than your full potential. If you're trying to make it in the poker world, constantly strive for something greater than you have, constantly strive to be the best poker player you can be.

^^ Yup yup. It's pretty interesting how wildly different play styles can be effective in this game, as so much is still unknown about both pre and post and there are a lot of exploitative lines to take.

There are guys who play like the ones you describe, but also guys who play the complete opposite and are just aggro aggro aggro and win in non-showdown instead.

Also fwiw, I think #'s 2/4/5 are the most pertinent. There used to be a midstakes reg on FTP that drove me completely nuts. He played like a really smart fish, but mirrored the style you talk about here very closely. He played a ~35/7/3, but could hand read quite well, and had some very effective bet sizing strategies. As a result, he crushed the game over a huge sample, and I never played against anyone else that had his style. Ironically when I first started playing against him he was extremely aggro, but over time he developed into a much more passive player preflop, and smart/aggro post.

I would say it's not a worthy concern at SSPLO considering most will just play their hand and not exploit you too much. They are also less aggressive and play more fit/fold postflop so you can c-bet a lot and they will turn their hand face up much more than the players at 2/4.

Very good post, I find thinking about levels of aggression really interesting.

Do you think to play this style you have to not c bet at times with hands you would want to get in to protect your "non c betting" range (and deception too i guess)?

Do you think balancing like this is worthy of concern at SSPLO?

Yeah getting a deep 6max table down to HU is pretty cool as they usually have close to 0 experience compared to the guys sitting at HU. However, they tend to play very nitty and straightforward, which is probably not that big of a mistake deep, and it makes the match a dull grind sometimes.

It's just another game, no one has much experience, especially now that FTP is out and PS doesn't have deep hu plo tables. Maybe starting some deep ante PLO 6max tables. Peace!

I used to think that but I'm not sure it's actually that true. There are a ton of guys who just bumhunt TD and do very well at it and the random fish who come don't really care; they just want to play some TD.

im like you in regards to playing basically anyone hu. it may not be the best idea, but i do feel like i get some more action from fish than the bumhunters for it. its probably easier to be a bumhunter at plo, but in TD i think it gets noticed really quickly, what do you think of that?

Be proud about it :) and rest assure.. You'll get back to poker all of the sudden. It's only a matter of time before you'll play more, than you do now. All poker players - including myself - reach a point where other things will tend to be more interesting than the game we once loved playing 24/7, but trust me, it's only a matter of time. You're a winning player, and you'll be back on track in no time ;) good luck in the future mate :)

The only way to get rid of that feeling you've got: "I actually don't need more money, and that must be the reason why i'm not in the mood for playing poker", is to simply accept the fact that you DO NOT need anymore money! :) you've reached a point in your poker career, where you can sit back for a very long time, without having to think about earning more $.

"I want to stress again how important it is to study this game off the table, constantly improving your game. It's shocking the amount of people out there grinding away at small winrates when all they need to do is spend time reassessing their own game. If you have a very good understanding of the game, it then becomes much easier not to tilt."

An 'Aha' for me. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah I went through a very similar thing HJD first time I played 10/20 and 15/30. Fortunately I was coming off a few big tourney wins so losing a few k didn't destroy my BR but was still pretty bad.

A thing to note is how different those games can play compared to 5/10 as well. I was comfortable winning at 5/10 but in the aggressive games of 10/20 and 15/30 I felt out of my depth a lot and ended up adjusting badly and playing worse.

RE: everything about taking shots. i can actually relate perfectly to everything you said. back in March i was feeling great, doing really well at up to 5/10TD: , so took a few shots at 10/20 when i had a little over a $5k roll. obviously ran really well and had about 7.3k online, when some good 15/30 games were running. obviously then i started running bad, and went on a 6k downswing. unfortunately i wasnt able to quit early enough, and played 10/20 with 4k, then 2.8k, then was losing at 5/10 and 3/6 until i had ~1k left online. thats when i stopped playing for a few weeks. anyway, i've kind of seen myself in alot of your posts, and hopefully i can learn to quit like you, and hopefully il be playing 100/200 with you soon :)

"Overall I generally think shots can be a good idea but you need some limitations. They are good for testing yourself, and to make your way up. However, there's a lot to be said for keeping all forms of variance low and consistent and moving up and down constantly not only changes the variance, it really screws with your perception of the stakes you usually play, and the swings you get into. I think to take shots, you need to be really disciplined in stop losses and in being able to move back down, otherwise it may open up a whole new can of worms."

Good stuff, I definitely know what you mean. A shot-gone-bad can destroy your motivation for moving back down and grinding, because the old level you play at now seems like play money, which makes it hard to take seriously.

Schweig and I spoke elsewhere, and that comment from above is clearly wrong.

If we assume that the action is on the river, where villain checks to hero, hero has the option of checking down, so the EV should be the difference between checking down and betting. So let's rerun the math:

Let x = p(call)
Let y = p(value raise)
=> p(raise) = 1.5y
Since we're value betting, we win more than 50%
Let w = p(win when called) - 0.5
=> EV(check) = pot x p(win when called)
=> EV(check) = 1 x (0.5 + w) = 0.5 + w

EV(called bet) = gain x p(win when called) - loss x p(lose when called)
=> EV(called bet) = 2 x (0.5 + w) - 1 x (0.5 - w)
=> EV(called bet) = 1 + 2w - 0.5 + w
=> EV(called bet) = 0.5 + 3w
Gain from betting when called = EV(called bet) - EV(check) = 0.5 + 3w - (0.5 + w) = 2w
That's consistent with a thin value bet...it's thin.

When Villain raises, hero loses 1 pot. In addition, since 0.5y are bluffs, he loses an additional 0.5y compared to checking.
=> EV(bet-fold) = -1 * 1.5y -0.5y = -2y

To make a profit from betting, the sum of these numbers must be positive.
=> 2w * x - 2y >= 0
=> x/y >= 1/w

To put that in context, if your thin value bet has a 10% edge (w = 5%), then villain needs to be flat-calling 20 times as often as he can raise for value with the nuts.

By dumping do you mean purposefully losing? In which case you probably spend more doing that than you gain in terms of action.

If you mean chip dumping to someone, it probably isn't worth the effort or risk of getting punished.

Bad Kings do kind of suck, especially because you can't really 4bet them without impunity like bad Aces. I'm fine with folding Kings pre in EP if you're getting 3bet a lot but not enough to get it in pre (which is often the case). It shouldn't be that bad to fold rainbow AAxx, although I wouldn't at 100bbs. Altogether they are about 0.35% of hands, or 15% of AA hands, but I'm sure you can still play some double-paired rainbow AA and some connected ones like AATTr or AAJTr type hands so it's even less than that. These hands and others are still good enough to play IMO, especially at around 100bbs because you can 4bet them easily.

I stand by my rainbow AAxx statement. The amount of decent postflop situations you actually get into with that hand are incredibly low, in terms of how often you get it in good, how often you get to value bet and how often you get to barrel, which I think are three most important things when considering entering pre; they are what will really add to the profitably of any hand.

The problem of this hand is purely an equity distribution problem, which can be summed up by the fact that you are very often making a bare overpair postflop, which is an incredibly bad hand to have due to visibility (the visibility is fairly similar to that of a mid-pocket pair in NL; the times you are unimproved but still in decent shape it's really tough to know, and it can be tough to go to the river when only 2 outs improve you), and also the hands it makes on future streets - when you're barrelling you often have 1-2 outs to make a nutted hand that can value bet on later streets, and it's so much better to barrel with polarised equity distributions that can make the near nuts on the river so we can get those bets in good more often.

This hand often starts off as a bare overpair and often ends as a bare overpair, which is what can be classed as "middle-heavy" equity and is generally very bad in big bet games, but especially when you're OOP because you are handcuffed to checking the turn/river way more.

Sure, there are a bunch of best case scenarios when you flop top set, like set over setting someone, top boat vs trips, but these are actually really infrequent. You may be 11% to flop top set, but it's important to remember that flopping top set doesn't automatically win or even necessarily lead to that profitable postflop situations all the time. There will still be a lot of wet boards, a lot of two tone ones, that people will be peeling a lot and you will have to face a lot of board-changing turn situations OOP with SPRs around 2 (it certainly doesn't help that people usually play cautiously on Axx boards vs an UTG raiser, leading to us seeing future streets more often than getting it in OTF). Anyway, my point is that a big chunk of these top set flops don't actually lead to all your future bets going in as a clear favourite, especially when you are OOP, and I think people tend to overestimate the amount of really profitable postflop situations with big pair hands)

31st minute on the left table: you have 88342 and decide to check and let the button bet. When he doesn’t bet you say it’s annoying. Why do we want him to bet here exactly?

Learned it 1-2 years ago but I took a long hiatus and got back into it when FTP introduced it.

I don't play any NL no, I don't think it's that interesting of a game because it's too costly to draw in that game.

Regarding the math question, I've thought about this for a bit in my mind without doing any proofs on paper or anything and came to the conclusion you need slightly more the 1.5:1 calling:value raise to break even. This works out to 1.5:1.5 or 1:1 once you add in the bluffs to his value raise range.

Agree it's not a good multi-way hand. 3-betting is pretty spew though in the games I play because no one folds pre-flop for one bet, so you're just building a bigger multi-way pot where your position is more devalued and folding a piece of the flop is more of a mistake.

Fold > call > 3-bet.

I like a call here. If we call and it goes, BB raise, CO, re-raises I think we have to fold the nuts here. Getting it in on this flop is really not good this deep.

Fold or 3b pre though this deep. This is not a good multi way hand we want to be HU with this hand.

wow just did some maths, came up with same as schweigs calcs, I guess it pays to do the maths rather than just assume the play where we get it in for +EV is best each time.

a) call $4.7 EV
b) check behind $15.5 EV vs shoving $4.7 (assuming he folds Q,J,T turns and shoves all others)
c) shoving $4.7 vs calling $1.8

Having thought about this a bit more I think Schweig is right about B.
Given that roughly 14% of the time we win $100 (if we hit we win $100, AK will not bet or call drawing dead), so EV about $14 (assuming AK bets on turn and we have to fold)
Unless AK does not bet or bets less than pot odds needed to draw to FH we are not putting any more money in the pot.
If we shove, we would only be winning about 34%, so about $103 for our $100 bet, so EV about $3, assuming since the cards are face up that there is no Fold Equity.

My calculations said that checking behind in situation B is better, even though we never get to see a river. In fact, I made it out to be around a $14-15 bet being the break even point between shoving and checking/flatting.

In this scenario we ought to consider the set as a drawing hand. The value of our draw is crudely doubled with 2 streets to go, as opposed to 1.

I believe we get it all in on the flop in a, b & c because of the following reasons:-

a) simple pot odds

b) the turn card is going to ruin our ev. When we x flop and miss turn, we must fold every time he shoves, which we can reasonably estimate to be nearly always imo. When we hit the turn, the opposite holds true, and villain can make an easy fold. Because there are more turns that favour the villain he takes the pot down more freq.

c) as stated by omahahaha

Assuming hes going to play perfectly. It is just as you say.

There is a good example of the maths behind it in the book mathematics of poker which i've recently read over.

B and C are interesting, when you get to the turn and there is that amount of money behind. The AK is in a really good spot being able to shove when you miss your boat and quads outs.

I believe your answer B is incorrect, but I'm willing to be convinced otherwise in case I screwed up the maths.

Your answer to C), which was the part I was interested in, is correct. The test was to illustrate that despite being an underdog the correct play is to shovel the money in (which is somewhat counter-intuitive) due to turn equity distributions, which is something that many people fail to take into account when dealing with multiple streets remaining. In fact, a lot of people will intuitively answer "call" because we are getting the correct odds to fill up.

If you just want sklansky bucks:
A) Call, very very slightly +EV (since if an A or a K falls on the turn, we have 1 less out to a win due to card removal as we can see his hand, but 3 outs to a tie.)
B) Shove, very very slightly +EV, also he could make a mistake/mis-click and fold.
C) Shove, since if we call we wont be getting correct odds on the turn to call the $80 into $140 if he bets AI. We are getting better odds than in B due to more money in the pot when the action gets to us. Also, he wont bet or call drawing dead on the turn (or river) when we hit. In fact there cant really be any river action as hands are face up.

We have just over 34% equity and are getting 2:1 if he shoves. So from a straight equity calculation its a call if he shoves.

So I have to ask. What is our long term EV against this player? What is the likelyhood that he leaves after scooping a big pot? What are the chances he rebuys and tilts off more after he gets "sucked out on?"

When the equity runs this close there should be other questions that can sway your decision one way or the other.

B&C can be answered by someone else. I just wanted the easy one.

Also applies a lot more to HU than 6-max because the concepts of game-flow, metagame, dominance, momentum etc. are way more important when both players are involved every hand; it's really big to have your opponent feel like he's out of control versus you.

In 6-max you may end up taking too long to get the spot that you were hoping to happen versus the same opponent, in which he gets time to cool off. In HU you're both straight back in there the next hand, and egos have a much bigger effect.

It depends a lot on the game I guess.

When I wrote this post I had HU PLO specifically in mind, though forgot to mention at any point. It's really profitable to get opponents to open up in that game because they make huge mistakes with their stack when the pot grows exponentially.

In limit there's very little reason to show a bluff because no one's suddenly going to lose more than 1 bet to you in the future.

I actually think being able to continuously bluff a player who thinks "you are straight forward and never bluff" is much more valuable then having an image of a bluffer. So I generally lean on the side of never showing a bluff in this situation.

Agreed with everything you said.

I think it's super valuable to be looked up bluffing in limit games (ie snowing in 27TD) due to the awesome pot odds they'll be getting on later streets.

I also think the key type of opponents you want to do the bluff then bluff on are skilled, level headed opponents that can think well and have a non-spewy image of you (but they think they're slightly better than you). You basically want an opponent that has a "you're straightforward and I won't fall for your trick" kind of mentality. You see decent video makers making somewhat tight folds after bluffs all the time reasoning "he just got caught so he probably won't do it again straight afterwards".

Nice, thanks. So I guess, in a way, the last guy was playing better than most against you when OOP as he was folding the flop so much if he didn't fold pre. He obviously folded buttons way too much, but the take home point is it's never really a massive mistake to be too tight OOP against a tough player. Those must usually make for a more frustrating grind-them-down type match instead of a maniac or station. Going to check the other vid today.

That should read, "fold a lot more early when the pot is small." Reverse implied odds are killer in this game, and because the pot builds exponentially, a bad call or fold later on in the hand is much more costly than a bad fold early on.

It's not that common no that they adjust well no.

To adjust, you really have to change the whole way you play your entire range on several streets. Firstly, you have to overall be trickier, playing strong hands in certain ways, bluffing more, to put the pressure back on your opponent so that he doesn't have an easy time owning you. However, taking a line like check call twice with the nuts is very hard to do in this game OOP, because of how much the board change, and most players will rarely do that on certain boards.

Probably the best adjustment you can make versus a player who is playing very aggressively in position is simply to fold a lot more, which people hate doing HU. They hate folding any piece of the board even though it's very hard to play OOP on later streets. They get themselves into spots where they will later make a huge mistake on the river. I mean it's impossible to be one check calling down with weak hands, guessing whether your opponent is bluff heavy or not at any stage.

Usually, they do the opposite and me being so aggressive encourages them to peel wider, which usually turns into big mistakes because I can still slow down, or make big hands, or just continue to bluff a lot, and they won't really know which and have to play a guessing game more often.

That makes sense, never really considered it. I am putting myself in your opponent's shoes and it would be super annoying. You can't really peel cheaply and bluffs are much more expensive when you get pot in the face every street, as well as the implied threat of more pot bets if you continue. Is it common for your 50 and 100 opponents to adjust well to that or are those players rare at these stakes?

Cool, thanks for your comments.

For betting pot a lot, it's something I've just made part of my game. You are actually allowed to bluff more if you bet bigger, because you're giving your opponents a worse price to call. Usually opponents will play all their strong hands aggressively anyway, so when there's an opportunity for me to bet as a bluff or as value their range is mostly consistent of marginal made hands, so I can put max pressure on them with the biggest bet possible.

I also genuinely think it annoys your opponent more and makes you harder to play against than when you introduce more 1/2 pot value bets etc on the river. I generally don't like to vary my bet sizes due to hand strength at all, I think bad players can exploit it quite well. Instead I do stuff like thin value bet full pot which confuses people because they think pot bets are nuts or air. (see my post: http://www.deucescracked.com/blogs/schweig/45321-Thin-value-betting)

Did you ever see Isildur play HUNL? He overbet the river a ton in position when his opponent was weak and it's very hard to play against. It's the same concept here except pot limit doesn't allow you to overbet, but you would still like to bet the max a lot. Generally the opponents who have the same 'big bet sizing' ideas as me are harder to play against than the ones who bet smaller.

You played your hand fine. This hand is a very strong hand to 3bet, your opponent rarely has a hand as strong as the one he had, and he misplayed it. After he calls the 3bet you should expect to be ahead as almost always you will both draw 1. He should absolutely 4bet, and you should probably call that 4bet. Once you draw and he stays pat he would usually have a hand like j8xxx, j7xxx that he thought he would draw 1 with after calling, then saw your draw and changed his mind. Vs people like this I prefer an overbet of 1.5-2x pot as it will always leaves them clueless and lines up great bluffing opportunities, as well as gets max value when they have a 9 (they are never folding a 9 to 2x pot).

First of all, I wasn't making an excuse for losing (I was up $900 in the session if you misread that.) I think you misunderstood the point of this post, which was to detail the differences between the games and reinforce the proper adjustments needed to make to win in that game.

I actually often go on at lengths as to why ego can be both a poker player's biggest strength and weakness. It is actually the reason for many mistakes I've made in the past, but I'm not sure how it applies here.

You're blog entry was very informative and I enjoyed reading it. With that said while your reasoning made sense your excuse for losing is IMO unacceptable for a player of your caliber. It is apparent that your ego has masked the real problem, your ego. You can obviously dissect the game correctly but it is not a proper reason while you lost in this game

Indeed, double suited is definitely hugely different to single suited in that you can flop a NFD so much more often, which are the flops that your opponents are going to make the biggest mistakes on in a pot that size. With the hand he has, it's going to be way harder to flop a piece he'll be comfortable getting the rest in with.

If he were double suited I think he could consider a 5 bet but as he hits that crazy danger zone where he has too much to want to bet/get it in on flops you want to go with when you clearly know what hand he has. Even then I'd probably look for better side cards like 89, 9T, TJ+ before I wanted to 5bet preflop.

Yeah certainly not an "always 4-bet" hand, but against wide 3-bettors certainly one viable to do it with. He was 3-betting in the high 30s so I don't think you can ever be making a mistake so deep 4-betting something that's double suited and vaguely connected. FWIW I think his 5-bet is really bad so deep, especially if he's planning to just stack off on most flops with 2.5x pot left.

Yeah I did check out LIME AID PLO last night, very good PLO content and I'd probably agree with you that it's one of the best.

I sort of wish that 8 was a J or Q to be 4 betting, but this is a pretty good hand and spot to be 4 betting in with a wider range--I really respect the play. 500BB deep when you know he is only 5 betting AAxx and you have waaaay the implied odds you need to call and see a flop and can clearly outplay him post flop.

Also if you are thinking about re-subscribing to DC, there has never been a better time for PLO content. Whitelime's vid is possibly one of the best I've ever seen on PLO ever.

Yeah, I really enjoy being able to quit a session on a whim, take breaks to do some other things and then come back in half an hour, but tournaments really restrict that freedom. Sometimes after busting out of half of my tourneys I just want to quit altogether, but still have to play out the rest. Never a problem with cash.

It sounds like a good plan to stick to your main game and put in bit more volume. From what I hear the cash tables should be good on stars in December as people go for SN and SNE. Best of luck this month Schweig I know you will turn it around.

I think my biggest edge is probably in the 8-game/7-game mix. I play $4/$8 regularly and the players definitely play very poorly compared to the equivalent stakes in each game. For example, the 1/2 NL portion plays nowhere near as aggressive or as good as regular 200NL and probably doesn't play much differently from 50NL.

Within the mix though, I think a lot of my edge comes from the PLO because it plays so huge (4/8 stud is not anywhere near equivalent to 200PLO, probably closer to 100PLO) and I think a lot of people make huge mistakes for their stacks. Generally though, I think I have a decent edge in most of the games, just because the player field is weak.

The game I enjoy the most is Triple draw. I think the game strikes a good balance to being a good mathematical game, but at the same time providing many interesting situations to analyse, with room to make moves or mix up your play.

You did a good job of breaking down each game. What game do you think you have the biggest edge in? and which game do you enjoy playing most?
