Omaha 8
A few days ago, I decided to try and learn LO8 again, with pretty mixed results. Lifetime, I'm a pretty solid loser in O8 and I used to play it for short periods, lose a lot and quit it.
Since I came back to it, I started off losing $1500, then got back to $1k winner pretty quickly, but now I'm about $2500 loser again. However, I'm starting to think differently about the game and understanding it better, especially how high-oriented the game becomes when it gets short-handed. I'm still fuzzy on preflop hand selection though, but I stopped playing trashy low only hands that have really bad prospects for high and that seems to work out better for me in general because of how little those hands get to showdown (and when they do, they usually only get half the low or scooped.) I'm also still fuzzy on when to stay aggressive if I don't have something. I'm getting a better idea about equities though, and my understanding of PLO definitely helps a lot in terms of this.
My sessions are way less profitable and my swings are way higher than if I played a game I'm comfortable and good at, but I enjoy variety and also the challenge of learning and trying to improve at a game. I'll definitely keep trying to become a winner at it (there was a point I felt like I was playing a lot better but it may have just been variance) until I'm loads down again, then I'll go back to making money.
I guess the main thing is to just concentrate a lot while playing and remain vigorous in looking back at hands and figuring out where the money is being won or lost, and thinking more about the whole spectrum of situations you get into when you make certain preflop decisions.
