Had only been on the table for a few minutes, but this player had been playing most of the hands aggressively. Preflop is a standard call deep with position, even though that hand is more dangerous than it looks (beware of 'pretty' hands.)Â With two pair and a nut OESD, I'm flopped more than enough to continue with position. Without knowing anything about this opponent and his post-flop tendencies, I'm looking to play this cautiously this deep and see what happens on the turn. I'm mainly worried about sets (which are fairly unlikely given I have blockers to JJ, and 99 being an unlikely combo) and 99. He can easily do this with some sort draw, top pair, or overpair, but raising doesn't really accomplish much except increase the variance as probably a slight underdog vs his get-it-in range.Â
The turn brings an innocuous card, 5 of spades, which could very well give him a flush draw to go with whatever he had. He snap checks, which may be a strong hand looking to check-raise, a medium strength hand playing pot control or something to give up. With the stack sizes on the turn, it's an interesting spot to bet or check, because betting commits me to put the rest of my stack in to a check-raise as he can easily do this with an overpair + draw or strong draw and the pot will be too big at that point. I decided he still has a lot of combos that I beat that I bet here. He just calls my bet.
His call bet can be some sort of marginal top pair + overpair, or some sort of draw that he didn't want to bet and get shoved on. He never has a better two pair/set at this point as he would lead a lot of those, or check-raise. I don't even think he can have something like aces with a flush draw because he would often get that in rather than see a river OOP, so his turn c/c is very weak.Â
The river came an A, which isn't a great card but it misses most straight draws. I had already in my mind expected him to lead this river, representing AA or something because it's very hard for me to have very strong hands when I call the flop and bet the turn on this river (unless I had some two pair with also an A in my hand.) Given that, he can bluff this river a lot and I just think he is repping a very thin value range when he leads this river, becuase most of his hands include a lot of straight draw combos. I pretty quickly called and was good. Note that a lot of players won't actually bluff like this, but with the little information I had about him, it seemed likely enough to warrant a call with one of the stronger hands in my range.
