Stress, Life and Poker
Wow, can't believe it's been so long. I guess I've been up to a lot, though it doesn't really seem like it.
Quick update: Spent the summer settling in to my new place and city in Portland. Spent about a month back East between New Jersey and upstate New York visiting friends and family. Then it was back to school for me, my daughter and my babymomma. I'm in grad school for Library Science. I've been doing that and playing poker here and there. I adapted a higher variance style and was trying to move up at the same time which didn't work out well for me. Donked around in some tournaments to no real results. I'm back at grinding PLO100 now putting more volume than I have in quite a while.
I just watch a National Geographic documentary on Stress. All about what it really is and how effects our bodies and lives. It's on Netflix Instant Watch right now. If you have it you should check it out, it was really interesting. It also hit really close to home for me.Â
My whole family has an issue with stress and I'm no exception. I bring so much of it on myself just by procrastinating and not preparing properly for any number of things including playing poker. I have trouble managing my time, managing my stress and managing my weight. It's been this way for a very long time for me and I can see it to varying degrees in my dad, my mom and my brothers as well. It's kind of scary and ermm stressful.
It really has been taking a toll on me physically, emotionally and psychologically. I can see the things I need to, or can do, to make the changes that will help. I've been slowly moving towards those changes for quite a while, but it's been more of one step forward two steps back kind of thing. I'm feeling very motivated at the moment though and the future is looking bright.
So yeah, now I'm stressing because I feel like I stress too much, go figure. I've been thinking though and trying to trace it back to why I stress in the first place and how I can combat that. So I will be more active and proactive thus give myself less to stress about thus feel better so I can potentially do more which can lead to stressing less and so forth. Get myself into a positive cycle of growth and health instead of a insulated, crippling negative cycle that I've been in.
To bring it all together I think Travis Steffen's Shuffle and Flow series is hitting me at a good time. I'm getting a lot from it so far and just the overall theme and content are positive and motivating it's kind of all right in my wheel house of things I need to improve, especially time management. I highly suggest you check it out if you haven't already.
Oh also, life on other planets, HOLY SMOKES! I mean I always figured it was a statistical probability with the amount of stars there are but this is a pretty amazing discovery imo.Â

If there's one thing I know is true of myself and may be for you as well is do NOT grind when you're tired/stressed. Your bankroll will likely thank you for it in the morning.
I remember a while back you gave me some supportive advice, and I just wanted to say thanks and best of luck!
p.s. check out some literature on meditative breathing if you feel too stressed out. You'd be surprised at what a big difference it makes to just take a step back from whatever you're in the middle of and come back to it renergized with a sound plan
