Ron0914's Book of Tells
I used to play a pub league, small 20 man sit and go format. Not a bad game actually.
No concept of ICM (them or I to be honest) but a good structure, deep stacks and a few canny players in the mix.
Thinking about this little exploit still makes me smile:
It was final table, 8 handed and I am 7th, can double up to 3rd with about 14 big blinds. I’m in the small blind.
It folds round to me and I raise 2.5bb with AA. Big Blind calls with about 20 big blinds behind.
BB is a pretty good player by the league standards, TAGy and creative. But he seems to think I’m more tricksy than I think I am.
As he makes the call I recall his comments a week or two before when I was in a hand against a weak blind. “He’s bluffing, look at him he’s shaking†Don’t know how nervous you can be when you’re freerolling for league points but fair enough.
The flop comes down rainbow with one broadway card, pretty good C-bet fodder but I really need some value to move on.
I lead out for half pot hoping to get another street. I’m never folding.
Annoyingly he looks at his cards, the prelude to a fold. Damnit I need these chips! Ok lets see if you are paying attention today then.
I subtly fold my feet behind my chair legs, place 1 finger across my top lip, hand falling down discreetly over my mouth.
I glare at the flop motionless.
I recall something Caro said in his book of tells about reverse tells – bad acting is over acting. How far can I take this?
I tuck my elbows in trying to make myself look smaller, and slowly tense my right bicep enough to induce a slight tremble.
I got into this position pretty quickly, but subtly. BB is still glancing at his hand.
Look at me, Look at me damn you!
He turns his head, I move not one inch, just the gentle tremble which I pray is subtle enough to appear nervous. I actually am nervous, I hope this works!
BB holds his gaze on me, and I know he has noticed my Tell.
He reaches for his stack. I continue to glare at the flop.
What do I do if he asks me how much I have? I know the total already, but I don’t want to break the spell, scared I will give something away.
He is counting his chips, glancing at my neatly piled stack.
Come on man, a two year old could count that…
Of course he shoved, wouldn’t be much of a story otherwise would it?
He was actually so embarrassed when I snapped off the call, he refused to show his cards. The dealer had to prise them from his hands. Suited 1 gap rags, he’d totally whiffed it.

That's awesome. Very good thinking :). I play a in a league where I live 2 or 3 nights a week and I usually act strong all the time whether I am or not, but every once in awhile you can catch someone who is leaning one way or the other, and act in such away to push them further in that direction. I don't think you can completely change someones gut, but if this guy thinks you are a bluffer AND you appear like your bluffing his instinct is going to get in his way every time.
Good job!
