Oh Snap! Another 10nl shot busts
Bah, took another shot at 10NL and ran bad again, bankroll back at $200, where it's been all year. I'm going to keep mixing in 1 table of 10NL with some 5NL for the rest of the week and see if we can make it stick.
I've tried to describe the emotions I'm feeling at the moment to my Mt Robusto Skype group, because there's a lot going on in my head that isn't helpful, but it's foolish to ignore it becuase I think it tells you a lot about how you're approaching the game.
I think I'm mostly feeling frustration. The immediate question I ask in response to that is - why do I want to play 10NL?
I enjoy playing 5NL, I can beat 5NL, there are games running at 5NL...
So it comes down to money then? Possibly but I sort of treat the money as a way of keeping score. That's fairly easy at the micros. It's not like I'm buying in with rent cheques - I'm buying in with cheeseburgers. I don't know if that attitude will change as I move up, I'm conscious that it's not helpful to think about the money.
Is it the challenge? I don't believe the skill level is much higher at 10NL. Actually I suspect it's possibly worse, it feels to me as though the majority of 5NL players are casual players who are happy to play tight and pick off the fish without putting too much effort into moving up. 10NL seems to be more like the starting ground for a new fish just starting out with $100 in his account. I expect the real challenge to begin as I move up to 25NL.
Perhaps it's the status, as a 10NL player I'd be in the middle zone. I could offer encouragement to 2NL and 5NL players from my lofty 10NL post, whilst chasing the heels of those high rolling 25NL players. 50NL would be a lofty goal I could aspire to as I move up.
But now we're getting to the crux of it - "As I move up". I've been taking shots at 10NL all year, and it's just not sticking for me. It's frustrating to take a shot and miss.
Not because of lack of confidence in my ability, or the money, or the prestige - just because I missed my target.
There's only one way to deal with this though - volume! And lots of it.
Well that's where we must start then - lots of volume, lots of good decisions, lots of value betting.
Starting 1st December there is a fun little micro challenge going on

So I'll be using that to focus my attention for the next few months. Back to the grind!

The skill level isn't higher whatsoever at 10NL. Its exactly the same and the play really doesn't get much better until 50NL. Even then the regs there are only slightly better and you get a huge shift in the play at around 400NL. Until then its all the same.
Its your own mental blocks keeping you from staying at 10NL. Plug your own mental leaks and your game will excel...
