RIP Dave Niehaus (Mariners broadcaster)
I played a session of poker this morning. It went horrible. Then I Iocked my keys in my car. It's still sitting at Wal-Mart. So I'm not
going to talk about poker today. There is only one thing on my mind right now.
If you guys are here to read about poker, this is the blog to skip.
As you guys know, I'm a huge Seattle Mariners fan. A couple hours ago,
the Mariners broadcaster, Dave Neihaus died of a heart attack at the age
75. He broadcasted the games since the Mariners started in Seattle in
1977. The team was horrible for so many years and he made the games
so exciting. He went completely crazy any time significant would
happen. A one of a kind announcer. We worshiped him up here in the
Northwest. He was around for every Mariners memory we have ever had.Â
When old Mariners clips are played, such as the 1995 Edgar Martinez
double that beat the Yankees in the ALDS or Randy Johnson's no-hitter, it was Neihaus' voice that makes the moment so great.
I play online poker for a living. Which means a lot of lonely days and
nights at my computer. I would listen to every Mariners game. From
Spring Training till the last game of the season. His voice got me
through so many boring nights. When Courtney dumped me in June, him
broadcasting Mariner games got me through some super hard times. I used
to think that I wouldn't get through it if I didn't have the Mariner
games to distract me from all the hurt I was feeling. It wasn't just
the games that were distracting me. It was Dave Niehaus. He had the
most interesting and funniest baseball stories. He would randomly go
nuts at a pop fly because he thought it might be a home run. The best
call would be if the Mariners would hit a grand slam. He had his
signature call. "Get out the rye bread and mustard grandma! It's
graaaaand salami time."Â I cannot imagine listening to the Mariners
games with out his voice. It's like I lost a close relative. I've lost
my grand parents and an uncle and I feel just as bad right now.
That's what's on my mind right now. I guess there is a candlelight
vigil going on at Safeco field right now. I sure wish I lived in
Seattle. I'm listening to the special Dave Neihaus tribute on the radio
right now. Ken Griffey Jr. just called into the show to talk about
Dave. Griffey hasn't done an interview since he retired back in June.
The best Mariner of all time talking about one of the greatest sports
broadcasters all time.
I could ramble all night about this. Here is a Dave Neihaus mantage http://www.mynorthwest.com/?nid=577&a=22562 to give you just a glimpse at how nuts he'd go.
Talk to you guys tomorrow
RIGGED!
