August Update!
August has been going well. It actually started out pretty bad since I received a $300 bonus from FTP for not playing there in a couple of months (I usually play at Ongame now). I decided to clear the bonus in the fastest possible way, so obviously Rush! I'm definitely not used and don't want to get used to 4-tabling Rush PLO. It's a bit insane. Not that I can't handle the speed in the sense that I'm timing out and stuff, but it seems like I tilt much easily when I am running bad and playing 800 hands per hour or however many hands it is. I dropped down about half a dozen buy-ins getting it in good and then my D-game kicked in and I ended up down about 15 buy-ins just as I finished clearing the bonus. I think there's also especial about Scott Fischman that tilts me. Not even playing a hand versus him but having him at the tables. It's probably his face?
Anyway, I went through my hands and I definitely made some very poor plays I usually don't make. I also didn't learn much since I would often not have enough reads and just try to play hands in a vacuum which obviously doesn't work as well as playing with reads. This probably added to my frustration. All in all, I've decided not to 4-table Rush anymore. The only good note is I played enough hands to get a free month over at CardRunners, and I've been hearing good stuff from my Skype Group about the PLO videos that they have been coming out with. If anyone is playing on FTP, or can play at FTP and is not taking advantage of the Truly Free Poker Training program you are doing something wrong, and I would encourage you to stop this madness.
Fortunately, the second week went much better. I went back to Ongame and played my usual 2-4 tables of 100 and 200plo and made back my monies and then a bit more. On Saturday 14th I was feeling like taking down a tourney so I went back to FTP (still my favorite site for MTTs) and bought into the $33 re-buy PLO. I bought in for two stacks and right before the re-buy period ended I got it in 3-way on the flop with like 70% equity and lost on the river to a random gutshot. I ran good in that I had for some reason clicked on the Max auto-rebuy button and so I couldn't decide not to continue in the MTT. I suffered playing FR PLO for another 6 hours or so and finally took the tourney down, for a solid $3,5k profit. Thanks Kai for your support!
So, with that I started out week three feeling good. I took a somewhat extended break because I started reading some books about finance and investing. I've read 4 of them this month, which has taken a bunch of time. I finally decided yesterday I would start investing passively but I should still be much more focused on further improving my PLO game for now. So, I watched some videos over at BFP I hadn't seen (excellent as always) and after this blog post I'm actually going to watch Solid State PLO 5. It's been a great series so far, kudos to Dan and Kevin.
I also read something at Phil Galfond's blog yesterday (http://www.bluefirepoker.com/blog.aspx?blogid=25), read it if you can. If not, here are some cliffnotes. He basically said: "What do I think you should be diong? If you're planning on being a long term pro, and you are living comfortably enough that you don't need your monthly winnings to pay bills, I think you should be playing in tough HU matches all the time. [...] It's absolutely neccesary [sic] in order to reach your potential as a player."
So, guess what I'll be doing for the remaining of the month? Gonna get my heads-up on fo sho! If anyone that reads this also wants to play, hit me up in a PM or through Skype. For now, I shall study a bit and prepare myself for my second coaching session this month, this time with Mr. Teahuppo as student!
