Moved to a new fishing hole

Sitting down at a £1/£1. Hopefully I run good, other than the awful played pocket pair I think my play tonight has been rock solid.

Hopefully a positive update from The Vic fishing boat

UPDATE

Hit a straight flush, live, and just got paid out as the other guy hit a flush also. Can't really call skill on that but my first straight flush live in a casino!

Since then things have gone pear shaped and I am a buyin down. Oh well, live for some reason is way more fun, player banter perhaps?

From the bathroom at the Vic... you can fish anywhere!

Ok I am posting this hand and i am embarrassed by how I played but it is a learning curve about rushing.

Early in a tournament at The Vic (London)  tonight I had the following hand:

Me CO: QQ BB: JJ  MP: ATo

Flop Rainbow. K T 2

Bet 1500 with a call.

I folded to see the above turned over and nearly vomited. I think the fold post flop was good given pre-flop play but I think my pre-flop play was appalling.

This is how it player out:

Preflight blinds 50/100

2 limpers I  raise to 400, fold reraise to 1k from BB a call then I call.

Looking back my only play is I should have shipped.

Reraiser had JJmay have folded, fold equity? But all that being said all in would have meant I would have no tough decision on flop.

After that mistake I had to fold on flop given the action but there would have been no action if I raised preflop. Silver lining, after dropping a lot of chips I have made the last 30 and will see how it pans out.

Learning experience?

EDIT: wish there was better news but boom, busted out. AK with 3 callers to my all in loses to QQ, thems the breaks.

Fishing results

Playing results

Simply put, it was a good day, a good start. I lost a few hands being sucked out that cost me two all in's but I also had some good wins I finished the day on $545 which is an increase of $45 (225 BB). I played for about 3 hours this evening and half an hour at lunch.

I will beef this up with some actual stats from the session and maybe a couple of hands for comment along with my profit graph but I am lying in bed on the phone now so that won't happen until tomorrow night. The unfortunate thing is $20 of the days profit came via my iPhone at lunch. 4 tabling I play over 200 hands in the hour but can only seem to get hand history's for my last 200 from Stars, any ideas how to fix this? Add to this the pokerstars app seems to sit me in the wrong seat it just ended up reeking havoc with my attempted input in PT3 so I disregarded those hands (but the profit is still in my account ;) )

Non playing activity

So if I want to improve I know I need to also focus on study and further learning, yuck!  My current study is Jared Tendler's book, I have got through the first four chapters and it is really good. I think I will finish it without taking notes but then I will reread/skim it again and note a few key thoughts and points, it is great.

I have already watched the Baby Steps videos which were great and I have watched a few of the Ground on up with Tubasteve and N0whereman which were great but after reading somewhere about focusing your study I have decided it is a good idea so I am putting videos on hold until I have finished Jared's book then I think I will complete the Ground on up video series. This will hopefully allow me to grasp the concepts I am trying to learn a little more easily as I won't have 100 new concepts to juggle.

Something also on my to do list is to set some short term ad medium term goals that are not cash related.... I need to put my thinking cap on.

Anyway that is me for the day, I am new to this blogging world but to be honest it is really relaxing writing down my days poker activities, it feels somewhat theaeuputic.

Tomorrow I will update this post with a couple of hands and the stats to go with the day. Hmm just remembered I am off to the brick and mortar casino for some action tomorrow night so the update may need to wait.

Day 1 - bait has been purchased and the hook baited

So, the time has come to start this journey. I have tinkered over the last 10 days at NL10, NL25 and NL50 6 max to get a feel for the games. I hate to admit it but I am a fish and learnt pretty quickly thay NL10 will be my starting point.

There are pros to this though, it means I actually begin my journey fully rolled for it. At the higher stakes I would have had to start with more aggressive BR management which would likely have ended in disaster as it is hopefully that will not happen now.

So the point of the blog is to:

A - keep me motivated

B - keep track of my success and failures

C - provide somewhere to post all my questions and keep them in one place

D - hopefully get some advice as I move through the stakes.

Below are my starting position, rules and guidelines (surely all rules will get broken)

 $500.00 opening balance which represents 50 buy ins at NL10.

Bankroll rules

* 50x minimum buy ins before playing a new limit i.e. $500 for NL10, $800 for NL16

* To avoid getting bored I can try new limits when I have 35 BIs i.e. NL16 I can try when there is $560 in my bankroll, mix in two tables with my current limit tables.

* I move up to new limits fully when I have 50 BIs in my bankroll i.e. NL16 = $800, NL25 = $1,250, NL50 = $2,500, NL100 = $5,000

* If my bankroll drops to 30 BIs then I revert back to the lower stake.

* Goal is to reach NL100 by Xmas, playing 4-6 tables, 20-25 hours a week with a 2BB/100 hands record for NL100.

Opening hand selection - standard open with 3.5-4b

Small blind (Villain VPIP affects the width of opening range)

    * JJ+, AK, AQs, KQs (3 bet if there is a late position raiser)

    * QQ+, AKs (3 bet if there is an early raiser otherwise call the rest)

    * 10+, ATs, AJo+ (otherwise call against a raise)

Big blind (Villain VPIP affects the opening range)

    * same as button opening hands if folded around to SB and SB opposes me (limps)

    * JJ+, AK, AQs, KQs (if there is a late position raiser)

    * QQ+, AKs (3 bet if there is an early raiser otherwise call the rest)

    * 10+, ATs, AJo+ (otherwise call against a raise)

    * Alter if my BB is challenged every circuit (widen re-raising hands for a spell)

UTG (open with raise to 3.5-4 bb)

    * 66+, A4s+, AJo+, KTs+, KQ

MP (open with raise to 3.5-4 bb)

    * 66+, A2s+, ATo+, K9s+, KQ, QTs+, T9s+

    * 3bet with QQ+, AK, AQs, KQs call with 10+, ATs+

CO (open with raise to 3.5-4 bb)

    * 55+, A6s+, All Broadway, K7s+, Q9s, 98s+

    * 3bet with JJ+, AK, AQs, KQs call with 88+, ATs+, QJs+

Button (open with raise to 3.5-4 bb)

    * 22+, A5s+, A9o, All Broadway, K8s+, Q9s, J9s-T8s, 87s+

    * 3bet with 10+, All Broadway, call with 66+, 87s+

Exceptions

     * Call with all pairs if implied odds when hitting the set are there i.e. deep stacks 2+ callers

nbs

1. I have removed some small +EV opening hands from the blinds like 88+ and most Axs and Kxs combinations. This is until I learn to play better post flop.

2. VPIP of a raiser along with PFR and 3bet % will alter the above ranges slightly but currently I have such a small sample of hands most players will be relative unknowns so will stick to the above.

Gameplay rules

* No continuation bets unless the following holds true:

    1. I was the preflop aggressor

    2. The board is looks dry (or to have missed villain)

    3. Only facing one opponent

OR

    1. I am in position

    2. The flop is checked to me

    3. The board is looks dry (or to have missed villain)     4. Only facing one opponent

* No double/triple barrels. If called on the flop Cbet then check/call down turn and river OR fold.

The above may seem tight etc but I have lost a lot of money trying for continuation bets in the wrong places. When my preflop play improves I will loosen up a bit on the above.

* Assume villains check/call when weak or marginal and raise/shove when they are strong. Do not over think!

* Review players at each table every 30 minutes. If there are no obvious fish, leave the table and find a new one.

* Don't play heads up - the swings are too big for my current level and I do not have HU experience.
