Up All Night

What It Do DC?

Lots has changed in my life since the last time I blogged.  I'll get the non-poker stuff out of the way first.  I wrote last time about trying to get some real life work, and after submitting my resume to half a dozen places in town that could use my expertise as a teacher, I got an interview with NUKO, which is sort of an alternate school for special needs kids.  My role there immediately will be as a support worker (helping individual students, but they are looking to be expanding, and if things go well, I may be taking on a more active teaching role in the near future.  It seems like a good place, and I've always had an interest in working with special needs kids, so hopefully this will be a good fit.  As a huge added bonus, its only 5 hours a day 3 days a week, so I'll still have a ton of time to be a part time poker player.

Speaking of poker, I've gone back to my roots and been grinding a ton of small stakes LHE.  I played 26k hands of poker since my last blog.  I had mediocre results, but feel like I know what I'm doing so much more than I ever have playing TD or PLO.  The game just makes sense to me.  I'm planning on making a run for supernova at the end of the year, and hope to use this blog to talk about the pacing of the run and how many hands i'll need to put in to make it happen.

my HEM claims that at 2/4 i earn about .54 vpp/hand and at 3/6 .81  i currently have 48221 points earned for the year, and to make SN I need to play 96k hands of 2/4 or 64k hands of 3/6.  Last month i played probably 80% 2/4, as the games are almost always better.  I have now played enough that I've seen and played with a fair number of the regs, so with my colour coding and the help of PTR it's somewhat quick to find decent tables for a session.  I've been 6 tabling, and seem to get close to 600 hands/hour (maybe like 550 but it gets closer to 600/hr the longer a session goes, for obvious reasons).  I don't play sessions longer than about 75 minutes, but try to get a few sessions in a day.

I'm not exactly sure how many hands I will be able to play for the next week, as I am working basically a full time week doing custodial work, but it's mostly evenings, so I should be able to get some morning sessions in, there are more games and the quality tends to be decent.

Some targets for myself this month:
30k-35k hands (gives me a nice cushion for going into the christmas holidays if i don't want to be playing toooooo much, but i'll do it if i need to)
post 20 hands in the forums
do a couple session reviews with SIide or anyone else that's playing around my level and is interested

I've been really enjoying the new Blink182 album, and have also been listening to a bunch of Taking Back Sunday, Thursday, Brand New, and other emo bands that I loved 7 years ago.  I still love them.
I just read Nic Sheff's second memoir We All Fall Down, and am now burning through an anthology called The New Dead edited by Christopher Golden.  I also read the first Harry Potter book, and will probably be working through them quickly, as my wife is reading book two right now.

be well.

Watch The Throne

What It Do DC?

I've been pokering a lot less in the last month.  I played a WCOOP event yesterday, and busting in the 3rd hour sometime, lost a big pot for most of my chips with KK<QQ on a T53 Q x board for like 7sb pre/flop 2bb on turn, 1bb on river.  I had a piece of Bellatrix as well and was railing her and saw her get into a capped pot 3 ways with AA vs QQ vs TT on a T77 board where she and the QQ were driving all the action, the TT must have loved his life.

I've gotten away from PLO, I feel like big bet games really arn't my thing.  I've been playing some TD as I chat with Schweig, Orestto, and Mitch a lot, and they are all pretty good at the game, Schweig especially!  I'm also picking up a bit of LHE again, and I really cant remember why i put it down... it seems to be a game that i really understand.

On the real life front, i took a trip down the Oregon coast a couple weeks ago that was a great time.  I went with my wife and another couple.  We had a casino right by the house, so I got some poker in between day trips and home card games etc.  I didn't do anything spectacular while at the casino, but i played NL for the first time in a longtime, and didn't do so terrible.

I'm probably going to be giving up the glamorous life of a professional online poker player.  I've been hit by FTP and AP for a few K, and with less games it's been harder to make it work.  I've also struggled with PLO and had a bunch of breakeven months.  I'm going to keep playing, obviously, but I've been working a bit more as a custodian, and also getting resumes together for teaching-type jobs.  We'll see how that all works out.

Anyways.  be well.

all these hands were against the same villain, obviously we had a bit of a dynamic.  when we were 100bb deep it was basically a race for him to get his stack in the middle, so I wasstacking lightly too, and that caused us to get really really deep.  weeee.

I went to Las Vegas with a friend of mine and his high roller boss and stayed in an awesome suite and didn't pay for anything during the trip (food, etc)

Some fun stories:  I played some 10/20 LHE with Hal Lubarsky, who is famous for being a blind player.  He played ok.

I was walking the strip at 3am and saw a stagette wandering, and the bride was topless.

I played a bunch of hands that I wrote down, but I ahve a couple situations that came up that i'll just discuss.  one, i think i folded a chop in a run it twice situation.  I had all red 9987 on a A96 flop.  I got allin vs AAxx, and the board made a red flush,  I didn't really notice and folded, obviously there is a 5050 chance that I had the flush and should have had half the pot.  another day the opposite happened where I got half a pot that I'm not sure I deserved, where I made a straight and villain may have made a bigger straight (he had a set) but the dealer and the floor didn't say anything, and there was some commotion because a 3rd player who tank folded the flop would have made a flush in both halves.  I dunno.  The world works out that way i guess.

I played some live poker in Vancouver, and am heading back over there today for an allnighter with a few friends.  There is a 9/18 LHE game that runs on friday nights, so i plan to crush it for a bit.

As far as poker goes, I've given up on HUPLO for a while.  I don't think i have what it takes to be a big bet player.  I've been playing TD the last 2 weeks, and the limit structure of a game just makes sense to me.  I like it so much better.  The hu game is really interesting, and people seem to play pretty badly.  I'm obviously not really winning yet, but i'm still learning, and I luckily have some really good TD minds to ask questions of all the time whenever i'm concerned about a play.

This was a really rushed update, sorry.  If there is interest in me going through some of the live plo hands i played either in vegas or in vancouver, shoot a comment and i'll toss a post out with a bunch of hands and my analysis of why i did the things i did.

Dead Wrong Intro

What It Do DC?

Another month of poker is finished, and I've managed to limp through it.  for the 3rd straight month I've put a + on the board, but it hasn't been enough to be really proud of.  I had my best day of PLO, +17bi, this month, but even with that, I was up less than that for the entire month, including rb.  I still have a lot to learn about HUPLO, and I think that I make a lot of atrocious errors.

Not exactly sure where I'm going from here, but I'm planning to get some coaching, I just need to find a good coach for hu.  I'm hoping to get together with KasinoKrime, but so far he hasn't been around.  If anyone has a suggestion on a good huplo coach in the 80-150 range, I'd appreciate it.

I have a number of goals/targets for the month, which are:

1) put in 25k hands for volume
2) get coaching
3) make one good quit early in a session against a player that isn't going to be super profitable every day
4) avoid taking losses after I dip into my C game at least once a week (like, as soon as I recognize that I'm not playing well anymore, quit then, not after waiting to see one more all in)
5) stack fools

In non poker news:

I'm moving back into my house tomorrow after spending 3 months living with my inlaws.
The Canucks lost in double OT tonight to even their second round playoff series, which was sad
I really like a mash up of The xx and Notorious BIG - check it out
I'm excited to go see Fast Five.  the first one came out at the time in my life where every one of my friends just got their licenses, so we loved cars.

Thats all for this one.  Run well this month

Live PLO

What It Do DC?

I went to Vancouver yesterday to go see The Deftones, which was probably the heaviest and loudest show I've ever been to.  It was enjoyable, and they played all the songs that I wanted them to play.  The crowd was pretty typical, but it still amazes me to see dozens of girls with huge tattoos on them.

Another part of my trip, and the one much more relevant to this blog, was playing some live 1/2 PLO at the Edgewater casino.  I played about 4 hours and finished down about $325.  The game was absolutely amazing.  Game plays super big, like, the bring in is $5, so your blinds are basically irrelevant, and the raise is to $10 or $15 pre (I was never sure, but they let me raise to 15 utg, so probably 15), and it was absolutely standard to go 5-8ways on the flop.

I managed to sit in the jesus seat with a guy playing something like 80/40 on my direct right with a stack that fluctuated between 2.5k and 4k.  I was reasonably certain from what I saw of him, that my stack (i was buying in for 200) was insignificant to him, and that I would be able to get into spots with him where he was cbetting and my shove would be a small amount more.  Sadly, I couldn't get into any decent spots with him.

He and I got into a 3way all in where I held AAxx on a 952hh board.  He had J983xhh , obviously can't fold 8 high hearts and top pair... like, against my actual hand I was a reasonable dog, but with the dead money, I couldn't fold (action went limp limp limp, aggro makes it 20, i make it 70, fold fold call, call.  210 in pot, i have 130 behind.)

The second stack I lost was another 3bet pot.  I 3bet AQT9hhss and found 2 callers. there was 165 in the pot on the flop.  Flop comes QT5hh (I have nut hearts)  I happily ship my stack in and get two callers.  Turn A, river J, villain pops over KQxx for rivered straight, other villain mucks.

The first hand I won was another all in, again with AAxx in a 3bet pot.  was 3ways on flop but only me and one other all in on flop of Q85 x 5 river and my hand is good.

I lost a couple small pots, but nothing significant to finish where i was.  One interesting hand occured that I obviously, in retrospect, misplayed.  limps 4 or 5 ways to me in CO and I have AA35ss, and I decide to limp along. (I suppose a case could be made for raising, but I don't really know what to do in a 6 way pot with 240 in it with 300ish behind if i don't flop a set).  Anyway, flop comes A22, checks to me and i bet 20 and everyone folds.  I think checking the flop to slowplay is probably way better here.  Like, I'm hoping someone has a 2 on the flop, but if i wait for the turn, someone could catch a set, and I could get my whole stack in with villain drawing to 1 out, and there being almost no downside to me.  I can also hope for someone to take a stab at the pot on the turn, which would give me some extra money as well.  The way I played it, i think the only way stacks go in on flop are if someone has A2xx, and only get a caller with 2xxx.

A big hand occured that I was not involved in.  5 or 6 ways in a $25 raise preflop, flop comes QT9dd, check check check, 125, call call, fold fold, young asian player tanks, and then pots for 700ish.  original bettor only has another 100 behind and obviously calls, next player tanks and tanks, and eventually folds, and aggro dude to my right looks pained and folds as well.  turn blank, river diamond, and young asian guy flips over J8xx with 8 high diamonds and is good.  first guy who folded claims to have folded KJxx without diamonds on the flop, and aggro guy folding Khigh diamonds, fearing NFD.  I feel like folding the nuts in a 4way (potentially), but at least 3way pot, is probably a mistake.  Like, he must have his share of equity with the amount of money in the pot and whatever.  Its only a FD that he can be beat by, not a better straight draw (well, i guess AKJx) but not like on a 589 board where the wraps can have you crushed.

Interesting day, and on the ferry ride home I met a guy who was in the game who is from my town, and he is going to get me the hook up to a live underground game that plays 1/3PLO a couple times a week.  Hopefully the game is even half as good.  He and his buddy were the two decent players at the table, but talking with him for an hour gave me a pretty decent idea that his poker thinking isn't up to par with a decent DC members.

Thats all, Take care

Pigs Fly

What It Do DC?

I suppose avoiding talking about the big bomb dropped on US players is impossible.  That sucks for all affected.  I think that my life will continue as normal, but the games will possibly get better through the lack of the US players, who are probably better than the average worldwide player.

A lot of interesting things to read about on the subject,  Wicked Chops and Pokerati are both excellent sources through all of this.

In my poker life things are grinding along.  I've had a really trying time learning PLO and have yet to hit a groove where I really feel like I'm way better than people I'm playing.  It's possible I need to be more game selective, as there are a number of players who are making horrendous mistakes preflop and postflop that I should be able to exploit.  Like, playing 90%+ of hands oop has to be bad.  playing trips in and out of position has to be bad, but I'm just not able to take these guys for all the money that I think I think I should.

I'm confident I'll figure it out, but it could take some time.  I'm going to watch some Galfond vids to try to get myself sorted.

I'm off to Vancouver tomorrow to see The Deftones, a favourite band of mine that for various reasons I've never been able to see live.  I haven't listened to them a ton in the last few years, but I couldn't pass up on this chance.  I'll be checking out the Edgewater casino, and depending on what is running, either sit at the 4/8 Kill lhe game, the 2/5 PLO game (I'll probably shortstack it) or maybe just play some 1/2 NL.  I don't have any idea how to play NL, but it can't be that hard.  I'll also get to see my sister, which should be nice, as we don't get to see each other often enough now that she lives away.

I just finished watching the Vancouver vs Chicago game and am really happy that we walked away with another victory.  I think that Torres played like a goon and should probably be out of the line up for game 4, and put Cody Hodgson back in.  We'll see.
I also entered my first ever playoff draft pool, which was a ton of fun.  I got the 3rd overall pick and got Ryan Kesler.  The draft was set up so that everyone had to take exactly one player from every team, so the trick was to take your player early from teams you thought would go deep.  I took Lucic from the Bruins second, and that's looking like a mistake.

I'm feeling pessimistic about my personal poker life right now, but hopefully I can get some ideas from these galfond videos, and take a look at getting some coaching in the near future.  Coaches already seem ready to slash rates, as not playing means needing to fill more time with coaching to get the hourly.

keep your chin up USA, you'll get through this! =)

Honeybees (Reflections On Losing At The End Of A Month)

What it do DC?

I finished my poker month on a dour note.  I had soared as high as being up 2.2k, and over the last 2 days have bombed off about 16bi.  I finished my sessions today feeling disheartened and annoyed with myself.  I had a talk with my wife about how I was feeling, and some of the causes of it.

Mostly, I'm upset because this downswing occurred at the end of the month.  It's an artificial time constraint that we create, the month, to mark our results.  I had a worse downturn at the start of the month, and while distressing, was ok because there was still the rest of the month to make up for it.  The lack of time to make up for these losses, I believe, was the most distressing thing.  I finished the month making about 1k, which, given the 80 hours I put into playing poker this month, means that I made minimum wage in my province.  Not awful for sitting at a computer, but less than 1/3 what I could be making at the other jobs I'm qualified for.

I feel like the job issue is something that I am still struggling with, being two months into my stint at 'being a pro'.  I think that I'm still trying to find bigger numbers to justify, not only to myself, but to my wife, to my parents, and to my friends.  Everyone has been supportive of what I am doing, although that I have no interest in other work right now is something at I have left a tad ambivalent to most people around me.  I think that it is something that I need to let go, as no one has to know how much money I make at poker other than me and my wife (and the readers of this blog, because i write about it... weird?).  She is completely supportive and takes a 'Remember when a couple years ago if you had made 1k at poker in a month how exited we would have been' approach, and helps to remind me that last year I started with 2 losing months out of 4, and struggled with the same issues.

She suggested I journal some of my feelings before and after sessions to see if there are some patterns that emerge relating to how emotional stability and results.  I think this will be an interesting exercise, as it could help inform me in the future for playing multiple daily sessions when my head isn't in the right place.  I'm hopeful that this will increase my profitability, and mental well being.

Poker has been ok this month, as noted previously, i put a positive number on the board.  I had my first 1k day of the year, which, obviously, suggests that the rest of the month ended totally break even, good times.

I'm going to post a few hands, and what I remember my thought process and mental state was at the time of these hands.  These are all the last (give or take a hand that I might play before i unpost my blind) hands of sessions that caused me to quit or stop my session.

Villain was on super tilt, as evidenced by his play in this hand.  He quits immediately after this hand.  I have played a 40 hand, 10 minute session in which I won 4bi and decided to call it a day.  I was very happy.

Villain is 3betting liberally, and is most certainly on tilt.  Flop is standard, as I dont love getting it in on the flop.  turn is standard as well, i think, given the rewards of hitting on the river.  Villain quits and I end my session very pleased with my play.

I feel like villain is running my over.  He is attacking me a lot, and I never seem to be able to win a hand.  I've lost a lot in this session already.  I feel desperate to force a win.  I snap quit after this hand and am very upset with myself for my play in this hand specifically, and others through the session (in which I win only 4 of the 20 biggest pots in a 200 hand session)

As evidenced by stack sizes, things are going poorly for me in this match.  Villain doesn't play particularly well.  He peels flop and turn a lot, and never folds his BB.  he has only c/r the flop one other time though before this.  Obviously getting it in on the flop here as a very small favourite is fine, but I believe that my play here was driven by the need for a win, now.

In the last hand specifically, the outcome of affected my dramatically differently from if it had been in the middle of a session where I was winning or breakeven. I could have easily shrugged off this hand and moved on.  Given his tiny c/r %, i may have even decided that calling the flop could have been better, with an assumption that he is probably not ever folding a set and that the money could go in great on the turn or i could find a fold if the board pairs.  or obviously folding on the river if i don't get there.  It may not even matter, maybe just stacking off here always is fine, but given my emotional instability at this moment, I wonder if a bet/call flop, call turn, fold river line may have been better for me mentally (or worse, as I could have bemoaned my luck for never getting there and looked desperately for another spot to put the money in the middle.)

So many things to think about.

Life in general is good though.  I'm going to see the Vancouver Canucks play on Saturday night, which I'm very excited about.  I'm also playing a lot of squash, which I'm struggling with some things, but taking steps towards improving my game.

That's it.

Sigh No More

What It Do DC?

Back to regular programming after a little commercial message last time.  I meant what I said though.  So HUPLO continues to slug along.  I've put in like 17k hands this month so far, and ~7k of them have been at the PLO100 game.  I've moved up, as I needed to get away from the raketrap that was PLO50.  My results for the month thus far have been weak, as I'm just above breakeven without rakeback and bonusii, but I'm firmly ahead in my AIEV and I'm sitting on a 6bb/100 wr at the 100 game so far.  Not bad.

There are many strategy things that I have improved at, like not stacking off with bottom two pair on a flop in a single raised pot, but one aspect that I am aware of, but haven't been able to do much about yet is using meta considerations to make better quits to get out of games that arn't profitable anymore.  In the games that I am playing, there are plenty of opponents who 3bet an absurd amount, there are also villains who defend 80%+, therefore there isn't much reason to play somone who plays like I do unless they are tilting.  Theoretically playing them until a stack goes in, and if I win, keep playing to see if they play worse trying to get it back, and quitting if i lose would be a really good thing, but obviously if I lose I just become what I want them to become and 3bet more aggressively, try to c/r more liberally, etc.  Another example is when a villain is bad and they lose a big pot (maybe 400bbtotal) and then they 3bet stack off the next hand almost irregardless of their hand.  I need to keep playing them until they win a stack, because they tend to calm down pretty quickly once they have 200bb again, and the spot might not be profitable if they think clearly.

I'm still hopeful that I am going to stop making so many -ev stack offs and call downs, but we'll see.  Here is a hand that at the time i thought about for a few seconds before he bet, and decided that if he shoved I had to call.  Everytime we were in a big pot and the nuts on the river changed where I was the agressor, he shipped, so I felt like I needed to call at some point.  This was not the time.

I'm looking at my HEM and the 15 biggest pots I've played this month, i've won 5 of them, and only 1 of them did the money go in before the river, and i had 100% equity.  In none of these big pots what I a favourite and lose, but i did get my money in with between 10-44% equity a bunch.  yikes.  Something to look at.

Anyway, in the life front one of my best friends is coming to visit today, and I'm really excited to see her.  I've been playing a lot of squash, and my body is a bit of a mess because of it.  My shoulder is hurt, my back is sore, etc.  I need to drop the europe weight, and also stop getting older.

Take care,

LQ

Testing out PLOQuickPro

What It Do DC?

I'll make a blog post about my current huplo journey soon, as I've just moved up to PLO100, and it's going fairly well thus far. For now, however I want to post a review of PLOQuickPro, KasinoKrime's new training tool that I had the good fortune of getting a sneak peak of.

When John first announced that he was coming out with his own training tool for PLO, I was reasonably excited, as I had aspirations of getting my PLO game in order.  His website currently has a couple of preview videos on it, and I enjoyed watching them.  I contacted John yesterday and asked him whether there would be any HU content within his program, or if it was more geared for 6max.  He told me that it was 6max based, but some of the material would be useful for a HU player.  He thought about it for a bit, and told me that there was one lesson in his series that he thought would be very helpful to my aspiring HU game.  He sent me session 10 in his series titled Postflop Warfare.

The lesson states its purpose, and piqued my interested immediately "Big hands in PLO often play themselves - I have a set, you have a big draw, we put the money in and just see who wins.  With that being the case, the money made in PLO is through the small and medium pots".

I found the information presented in the video to be useful (immediately i started to try to implement the strategies, and found them to be successful), and easy to understand.  John presented the material very clearly and gave lots of hand history examples to round out the video.

I haven't gotten to look at anything else from his program yet, but can say with confidence that if the rest of the material is as powerful as this video was, the PLO games are going to get a lot harder!  Getting this product will help you keep ahead of the curve!

Thanks for giving me a preview John.
