Lean Leon puts in work
I tend not to read my old blog posts as most are drunken ramblings, especially the last one. I have an over-active mind, as I imagine most poker players do. Drinking shuts that off for the most part, which is why I enjoy it. It’s nice to not think for a few hours each week and just be.
This was going to be a long blog post about career choice, the 10,000 hour rule, weight loss, and drug choices but I’ve decided to keep it simple®.
First off I have to introduce a friend of mine, for the sake of this discussion we will call him “lean.†Actually that’s weird, let’s use Leon instead. Leon has always been skinny and somewhat muscular, naturally athletic since grade school and has generally had the same body composition since then too. He never really gains weight despite eating crappy foods and generally living an unhealthy lifestyle. The thing you have come to realize about Leon, while he eats 5 slices of pizza, is that’s his first meal in around 30 hours. He’ll even tell you, “man, I haven’t eaten since breakfast yesterday.†That’s how lean Leon stays so lean. He has hormones that don’t signal he’s really really hungry. He can go 24 hours without eating much. He doesn’t think about food at all. Being hungry is like taking out the trash. One day the bag is full and you bring it to the curb. The other parts of the day you don’t think about it.
For someone who may have been formerly overweight Leon is amazing. They can’t understand how they can act and think like that but it definitely happens, we all know someone like this.
Poker is the same way, some people pick it up quicker, understand the concepts, and are willing to put in the time to make them intuitive. They have some form of what Leon has, in a sense it comes naturally to them, like eating. These people can obtain a certain level of ability and how high they can go from there is essentially a product of their work ethic. The 10,000 hour rule still exists but there has to be some baseline from which to work. Some baselines are higher than others. If durrrr was really lazy he’d probably be crushing 3/6 and doing whatever durrrr does with the rest of his day.
In short, I don’t think I’ve been working hard enough. So that needs to change. I don’t want to waste my baseline.
Ordered Skuh Lan Sky’s new book, can’t wait for it to come. Dude is like “the situation†from Jersey Shore of intellectual thought. Overly confident and completely self-conscious at the same time.
No song, eehhhhhh can’t close without something, Nickatina I’ve been sleeping

The 10K hour rule is essentially that greatness or performing at an elite level isn't the product of genetics or in-born ability but deliberate practice. My take is that it takes some sort of personality or in-born ability to even reach 10k hours of deliberate practice. Therefore, there has to be some sort of genetic relation to what you choose as a profession or even a serious hobby.
