IB just felt like a bit of a muddle from start to finish to me. There were some cool sequences in it but there were also those that felt really self indulgent (too much of people sitting around talking about films). I was expecting the Tarantino version of the WW2 films I grew up watching and that wasn't really what we got which didn't help matters either.

Not enough Basterds for me. Christopher Waltz was so awesome I was fine with it, but I thought the movie theatre owner plot line ran on too long. I still thought the movie was great though. Just wanted more of Brad Pitt talking.

i didn't feel dirty until you wrote that! i haven't seen IB since it came out, what didn't you like about it? christoph waltz was great, i really enjoyed a few scenes (the tense one downstairs in the bar especially) but the rest of my memories are kind of hazy.

I'd feel dirty if I read the script for Django Unchained before I saw the film. Say no to spoilers!

Looking forward to it even if I thought his last film was a bit meh.

@QED thx man. check out the script for QT's next movie Django Unchained... it's like 180 page pre-civil war slave revenge epic!

Good job, man! I'd definitely be interested in reading it if you ever make it public, but I COMPLETELY understand if you don't. I have a whole bunch of short stories that I don't want read, I just needed to write them.

Don't know much about writing movies but I have watched one before!

@MCN - I read my dialogue out loud and try to imagine actors saying it... at least once it's at a level I'm comfortable with. Harrison Ford also once famously said "George, you can write this shit, but nobody can say it." :) Big believer in tons of drafts and soliciting lots of feedback from other writers along the way. For me this draft is about just getting to the end and improving my daily process. I have no expectations of greatness without many more years of hard work. Thx for the support!

60. But no "BOOM"?

Do you work with actors on dialogue or work in writing groups? I suppose it's the same process as learning poker. I know chuck palahniuk says writers' workshops were invaluable to him.

That great soliloqy in Blade Runner was actually written by Rutger Hauer the night before they shot it.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe,
Attacked ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion, etc, etc, mmm lovely

The best line in Star Wars - "I love you". "I know". was ad-libed by Harrison Ford.

Highlander was written by a guy as a class assignment in school (but of course was extensively re-written after being sold)

That is the sum of my scriptwriting trivia :)

Guess what I'm getting is to just keep piling through that first draft because it doesn't have to be prefect, will get ripped apart even if it is, and by the time you're sitting in your premiere it will seem like a massive collaborative process anyway.

I would however add the disclaimer that I have not yet written a Hollywood blockbuster, or, in fact, anything else.

On to Zelda... I remember being all young and finishing the original game in one sitting of just under three hours because I wanted the dude holding the sword for Act 2 with a zero by his name for no deaths. I was an OCD nerd even back then.

re: distribution plans, we're going to take it to film festivals. we're gonna wow the socks off the distributors and hope they cough up BIG MONIES! i imagine it will likely be available to watch first via DVD/Internet, but i'm not really sure how that will play out, too early to say.

re: writing - I agree. it is bullshit. but ima get back on the horse.

re: playing U3 without playing U2, play U2 first. you'll enjoy the story of U3 better and U2 is almost as good as U3 (in some ways it's better...) they are both phenomenal game experiences that will blow your mind.

Yep all the dialogue is written out, like in a play. You should check out a script for a favorite movie, many are available online. The format is unique and they're interesting reads, for instance Alien is written like a haiku.

What I mean by in someone's head: there are various techniques you can use to understand someone's thoughts in a movie. You can use voiceover, you can deploy flashbacks, you can go into dream/fantasy sequences. But in a novel you can literally read their thoughts throughout the story, and often for multiple characters. In a movie you're mainly watching the characters say things and do things.

That sounds interesting. How about the dialogs, is that also written in the screenplay?

I dont understand what you mean with 'in a novel.... by watching what they say and do'? You get into a characters head in a movie to right? How do you make the difference in a screenplay?

you should just write something very derivative. just copy other better things. and if it's bad, so what? then write it again better. and if it's still bad, so what? then write it again better. this is what the Bronte sisters did.

it's closer to a short story than a book. a screenplay is technically a blueprint for a film, so the writing represents everything you would actually see unfolding on screen.

in a novel you spend a lot of time inside character's heads, in a movie you have to understand their motivations by watching what they say and do. in a novel you can take time out to explore tangents and story that's unrelated to the central plot, in a movie a primary concern is in holding the audience's attention and keeping them entertained and surprised.

since you showed me this site how many years ago i think i have read every page of it.
a similar site:
http://thestorydepartment.com/

also while this guy, 60 sec director, has alot of great articles that are short but full of great stuff. some of it is geared specifically towards directors but articles like this
http://60secdirector.blogspot.com/2009/06/why-jj-abrams-is-worth-every-cent-he.html
are great for writers.

sol- aww shucks. the drive is something you have to slowly work at. set long term goals, break them into super tiny bite size chunks, try to be better today than you were yesterday. that's all it is -- eventually shit gets done, and you wake up and feel the motivation to keep climbing towards whatever it is you think will make you happy.

It is crazy and I envy you man. It is very hard to have that kind of drive. I can only hope to muster up half of that passion and drive soon

QED- he's talking about 9's structure as it relates to being a complete story, but he often gives examples of movies that are successful in a lot of different ways despite not being structurally perfect. He never says that a movie needs to be a complete story to be entertaining. I thought 9 was OK, fwiw. I liked the idea and the animation better than the execution...

Chaz- yes that is amazing.

This is conflicting from what I've heard in the past. People are excellent intuitive psychologists. Women specifically can soul read brilliantly. They can detect the smallest changes in patterns of behavior. This has evolved in us since the begining.

Apparently its emotions, social pressure, being a degen, etc that clouds your intuition and judgement. It sounds very shallow but your gut feeling is usually correct. Where people get confused is that their "Gut" is in conflict with emotions and social pressures

Great post. The "I would do X here so villain must X also" is something that I deal with on an almost daily basis with students. Tougher still is breaking through the myth that there is no rhyme or reason behind why laggy fish do the things they do.

Krantz - Since you always give great poker advice, I'll share some great screenwriting advice I heard recently. Alex Kurtzman is a Wesleyan alum and he came and spoke during graduation weekend. He said when you're reading scripts its better to read the previous drafts of scripts rather than the final version since it teaches you how the writers got there. He said their is only one way to write a scene well, but it takes a couple tries to get there.

He later discussed how to write well and fast. He said that organization is key. He said that he learned how to write fast while working on the Hercules show. He said making outlines has helped him immensely in his career thus far. Anyways, I hope this helps.

Im doing an MFA right now in Creative writing and ive got a bizarre nonfictional writing class going on atm, so guess what? I'm writing about poker.

Ive also taken some advanced screenwriting classes.

If you want any assistance with that poker screenplay hit me up.

He fails to realize that you know that he knows that you know that he know the turn check really was weak.

I hope you are going to include once upon a time in the west in your 40 screen plays. Morton/the railways make an interesting metaphor for government involvement in online poker, especially given the French example.

hey thanks for answering. i don't know why i play bad in some days. any normal day, same schedule, same food but different days for poker. I know when i play bad, i feel that i can't process too much information in a short time and not playing very good just autopiloting but can't do anything about it. my mind just works much slower(this is what i feel) than in some days and can't put peoples on ranges make good folds and things like that.
how is in vegas? :P

adrian - the whole point is that you need to prepare to create that focus. the play bad comes from not being mentally attuned. ask yourself: why do you play bad? when you are playing bad, are you aware of what you're doing? if you're not aware, how do you become aware? if you are aware -- why can't you stop it?

don't you think is better not to play in the days when you play bad? you know you play bad, you are not very focused so why keep grinding? just for the sake of playing to gather as many hands as possible per month? the main reason is not to own ppls and make great decisions.

if you have like 10 days per month when you play bad and just can't stay at the computer because you know there are going to be losing sessions what can you do? play bad on autopilot or just play less hands per month and don't play in those bad days? i don't know if you get me :P

I think this is the only time I will ever be compared to Chuck Norris! I also make sure to get some food to eat while I'm loading up tables.

It is awful when you get stuck and are either hungry, or need to use the toilet, but you can't run off because you are grinding. Instead you continue playing, distracted, bothered, and tilted. After repeating this mistake a few times I realised that it's best to eliminate all these distractions and I play much better.

These are especially important for me to get out of the way before I play because I often play marathon sessions. Sometimes I think "I'll just play for an hour or two, so I don't need to worry about this stuff" and on hour nine you're distracted and annoyed but unable to get away.

Tecmo - when you don't have the hands to take the longview, you need to just live in the short view. Take it session by session and play every single hand perfectly, that should be your goal. You might not be able to PROVE you're a long term winner without the large sample size, but that doesn't mean you can't know you are one.

Guys asking about red line - just watch the Thin Red Line over and over. There's nothing I can say that's better than what grindcore has said on it.

1.How to keep grinding when you´re winning.
I have no problem to grind out downswings but if
i´m up a ton i have trouble to motivate myself to keep playing.
2.How often to exploit a leak in a player who changes his play everytime he gets uncomfortable?
3.What to do, when you get caught bluffing and are card dead?I´m playing too low for the "he just got caught bluffing, i´m sure he wouldn´t do it again this fast"-type, so once they see me 3barreling with air they´re mutating into calling stations.

Hmm... now that i read it,forget about nr.3 seems like valuebetting is the only answer anyway :/

Great blog post! Love that book and I'm not a fan of sci-fi... mostly because I hate aliens. But loved rereading the passages you posted and thinking about how it applies to poker.

rest of the movie was pretty cool though, epic soundtrack and amazing value from shock humor.

Comment on hand vs fullflush by increaseyourpokeriq

i think one important factor that is overlooked is that fullflush did cbet the flop. (the sizing could go both ways, obv only u can answer that one)

This is one of the flop textures, where people in general give up some % of the time, since it hits your perceived range very well.

This should decrease his bluffing frequency in general. in addition to that the 8 also improves some marginal hands to 2pair or striaght (Q9,79,T8).

I´ll be biased about the river (knowing the results), but i think 1,2k ish on his side would be believably repping a decent Tx vbet (20% 3b can include KT,AT,QT), knowing you rarely have Jx.

This means you´ll fold all your marginal hands to the 1,2k ish bet (i assume). thus, it would suffice for him if he was to bluff.

An overbet bluff doesnt make sense unless he wants you to fold 2pair/straight, which nobody is expecting anybody to do.

I wish i had that love for the game. Ironically found it after quitting ;)

I think you should put even more time into the movie and get that fucking poker movie out there!
I was not a big fan of 2M2M, but i believe the from busto to robusto series is both entertaining and inspiring for many people. looking forward to the outcome.

Keep up the good work

maybe i should have made this a forum post so i could quote everybody!

guys who asked about villain's turn barreling/checking frequencies - i had no reads on that at the time.

jjd323 - yes i am checking back huge hands here and definitely against fullflush. that probably makes it slightly less likely this is a bluff.

i think delcrossb and scratchy1 are pretty spot on. if i had thought about what scratchy points out, about how he should bluff for less money with his buffs, i probably could have folded. leveled myself bad here. i also think vs this opponent specifically, the bet/check/bet line is weighted towards strong hands (he probably holds off on bluffs or doesn't c-bet about 1/3 of the time we get into this postflop situation)

roulirouli - i wonder if 450 on the flop could be a bet-sizing tell. he had the nut flush.

hyachachacha!

I'm not a high stakes player so what I'm going to say might be mildly retarded but here goes:

His cbet is somewhat small for that board texture. Since you didn't raise the flop and checked behind on the turn, your range looks a lot like (65s,75s,T7s,T8,T9,66-99, some Ax} + a few combos of draws you didnt raise the flop with. From his point of view, the vast majority of that range would fold to a river overbet shove. So with that information we can call with bluff catchers, however the problem is that he can turn a better hand into a bluff and we are at the bottom of our range on the river. Knowing what his turn checking range looks like would help a lot.

I'm guesstimating his river range to be {JJ-22,AcKc,AQs,AcTc,Ac9c,Ac8c,Ac7c,Ac5c,Ac4c,Ac3c,KcQc,KcTc,Kc9c,JTs,Tc9c,8c7c,7c6c,6c5c,KQo,JTo} I'm assuming he barrels his KcXc more often than his AcXc since the AcXc have more sd value.

Your 7h5h has 35.5% equity, which is a fold. Assuming this range is accurate (I know its not) the worst hand you can call with is 77.

Look at the possibilities:

a) he isn't bluffing
b) he is bluffing but still beats your 4th pair, weak kicker
c) he has pure air

I don't think he shows up with pure air often enough that you can call.

With the turn check and your line i think he puts you on a decent ace - the turn check might make sense to him.

I lean towards a 3 (turn check from him as he has some showdown value) or a busted straight draw. if he thinks you have an ace hard to call without a pair on that board.

He thinks you have a marginal pair.

Even though you very rarely have a strong hand in this spot I think he knows that you know that he knows this and his line is weird and weird lines get looked up light so I doubt he's bluffing.

I would call with the upper flushes so yes that then of course makes it a great spot to bluff but that doesnt mean people do it.

Betting less would be a better bluffing size since it would widen his value range significantly and get a lot fewer hero calls.

I think the river is a fold because if he's bluffing, he may have your 5 beat with a hand that's better than a 5 but worse than what he thinks your bluffcatching range is. he can have 66, 77, 99, bigger 5x 8x a really bad Tx suited, bajunky 3b bluff fodder.

I doubt he expects you to have a very strong hand after checking back the turn, just bluffcatchers and pot controlling stuff, rarely a monster.

He can still have some value hands that he checked the turn with if he thinks you're betting a high % of the time so I think the only kind of hands we can rule out are good to mediocre draws that he'd almost always (I may be wrong here) semi-bluff the turn with.

As far as whether or not he expects you to fold and if he should bluff for a different amount if he was, that's hard to say if we don't know how he perceives you. Does he expect you to think he's polarized and does he expect that to increase your bluffcatching frequency or is he trying to buy max fold equity on the river thinking that you'll think he's polarized and fold anyway. I just don't know dude. You tell us :D

Unless he has adapted a balanced range of river over bets a la isilsur1 I'd assume his range here is basically the nut flush and the nut flush blocker. If he is capable of vbetting any flush here, since we basically never have a flush, this becomes closer to a fold. I'd have to know about the specific dynamics of the hand. Fullflush is a very intelligent player though so I think he expects to be able to overbet here and get value from our totally marginal bluff catchers (like that hand with you vs. Antonius where you overbet jammed K9 into his AK), except in this spot we represent far less strength. I'd imagine he expects us to fold probably like 75%+ of the time. I dunno, I think it is close.

I really think this would come down a read. Is he stuck? Is he trying to level you into calling with your bluff catchers, or expecting you to just give up with them (which is something that I would have to determine based on game flow and how he/I had been playing).

I also think that in this particular spot your actual hand is irrelevant vs. what he is repping. AK high here is basically the same as your hand is the same as 22. I just don't see him overbetting with something that has reasonable showdown value

With this information given, I can never make this call.

Even IF the river over bet looks like a bluff (even though it looks like a overbet for value to me --- esp. since he missed his turn bet), some hands he will be bluffing with still beat 57 (66,77,88,99).

To me, it looks like he wanted to check-shove the turn.. but since you checked it back, he overbet his completed draw for value, making it look like a bluff.

There's no earthly way of knowing
Which direction we are going.
There's no knowing where we're rowing
Or which way the river's flowing.
Is it raining?
Is it snowing?
Is a hurricane a blowing?

Not a speck of light is showing
so the danger must be growing.
Are the fires of hell a glowing?
Is the grisly reaper mowing?
Yes! The danger must be growing
For the rowers keep on rowing.
And they're certainly not showing
any signs that they are slowing!

Krantz,

Just think about what we're doing with the 43s hand: you're putting money in with little equity, out of position, vs. opponents who you have little fold equity against pre and post.

I know you're a veteran of many wars but do you really have to do it with 43s and not at least wait for say 98s or A3s?

Suggestions for Blogging Platform:

- Preview option so you can preview your post before publishing.

- Saving drafts? Right now if I type something up and its not finished I have to save it to a .txt file on my machine if I want to leave and work on it later.

- Allow players to add some text into the "About Me" side bar. This could include their stakes, 2p2 usernames, short bio.

- Social integration. Maybe allow users to enter their twitter username and have a feed in the side bar

- Sidebar links. Perhaps allow players to link to other blogs, resources that they use, online tools, etc...

Jay
1. I like it when two coaches are in the video.
Whether it be two coaches alone talking through a submitted e.g. coachtree series 1

or One student and two coaches as in the final episode of the last parallels video with baluga, whitelime and Insyder.

The reason why I think this works is that with two coaches they can discuss the merits of alternatives in a far more fluid and engaging fashion. Whereas if it is one student and the coach - what I think tends to happen is that because it is often not a dialogue either the coach or the viewer can be confused in or by the explanation as he runs through the variations.

Other good examples of series where this worked
Was your Pr1nnyraiding series 1 - you and wilt.
Dogishead/gmandatory.

Now I certainly see the merits in the traditional model as it gives us a good insight into what the coaching style of each player is.

But given for alot of subscribers getting coaching from yourself or whitelime etc is out of our price bracket - I think more of my suggested format is best for your top tier coaches. Despite the fact it might reduce the amount we see of you guys with the doubling up.

Finally I think it works better with no more than 3 because I found e.g. of Bonus 2m2m with flawless, youself whitelime and dani - as being just too cluttered despite the excellent content.
Another example is Coaching Series 2 bonus vid with baluga and all the coaches he introduced in that series in his around the horn style - had some merits but had too many voices and seemed to repeat itself sometimes.

Hope that helps.

Keep up the good work.

I like very structured, focused videos/series. Reviewing hands is great, but I like it best of all when it's tied to an overall theme or idea, rather than 'here are four interesting random spots I ran into yesterday.' Of course the latter is important too, and to some extent bread and butter content. But I like the series which are structured like a really great poker book. I think I learn the most that way.

From what I gather, DC was an innovator in several areas, and one of them was really emphasizing instructor's personalities. The instruction was put into an entertaining framework, with glimpses behind the scenes, including rivalries and challenges. Most of all, I think subscribers feel closer to the people making the videos. DC is warmer than the others.

I'll take some guesses about where the future arms race between training sites: I suspect the trend will continue towards entertainment, not in place of education but to make it go down easier. I think in three years we'll look back at old videos and say, "Jesus, that graphic with the funny baboon picture has been on the screen for a solid twelve minutes while the instructor is talking."

Part of the fun of the mentor/pupil series is the reality TV aspect-- there are personalities involved. Will the student be able to crush mid stakes after eight weeks of training? I'd definitely suggest adding a touch of 'real life' footage, to emphasize the characters and engage the viewer in on a more personal level. When possible, I'd have someone there to shoot the subjects, when that's not possible I'd just use computer cams, like video bloggers. Putting a face to the voice would add another layer of post production, but it's not hard to do, and I think it would be worth it. (I know lots of seasoned young camera men, fresh out of film school, who can make beautiful footage with no resources at all. You probably do too. Why not add some great looking b-roll here and there?) Like your own doc work-- if you could fold a little of the Busto to Robusto vibe in, I think it would add a lot.

You guys at DC know that poker is a game that is very seductive in terms of the lingo/look/mythology. There is a romance to it, which probably has a lot to do with why we all got hooked in the first place. I'd be looking to emphasize the drama, romance, and character, in ways that don't radically change what you do.

I love the site, btw.

more FWF, more Flawless, maybe get Sensei and Vanessa coaching some dudes in some sort of their own parallel series, say "Uncoachventional Wisdom" (6 max NL plz, though it would be a sick PLO series). More vids that bring the viewers into the action and tickle braaaaains. We learn more if we're not sitting idle with our hands in tubs of butter.... popcorn.

Also, I would like to see Emil in a series called Chuckles Day Out where he pwns people and signature laughs immediately after :D
