I hate to say it, but Hermann looks very much like Dr.Watson from BBC series. I know that you haven't watched it. I don't know how I haven't seen the simmilarities before. May be it's ok, because other than in the begging , they are different and choose diffrent paths.

Dr.Watson, injured in action in Afganistan, comes back to London area. He doesn't have much money, lives in a small room, has to walk with cane as a result of injury. He goes to a thereapy for "post war syndrome(or whatever it's called, pardon my English). And has a difficult time adjusting to peaceful life. Of course, everything changes after he meets and moves in with Holmes. A lot of details look very much alike but in reality Hermann and Watsan are nothing like each other.

Hah, that's funny. Can always go back and change that, I'd be shocked if the opening and the details don't change a lot between now and the final draft.
Actually, Herman can have a roommate. Asian dude who shoots dice in Chinatown? I need a character who can provide a way in to an underground faro game at the end.

May be Hermann has a job, and coworker shoots dice in Chinatown or Astoria.

Any ideas for kinds of jobs? Security guard? Cashier? Grocery bagger? Librarian? A job would be good, I need some place for him to be during the day while he thinks about Lisa and how to seduce her.

If the secret has to be passed on by whoever holds it why doesn't the old lady want to pass it on to Herman?
