Ya, interestingly this hand was actually played against the current chip leader of the Octo-9, Jesse Sylia, so will
Almost certainly make ESPN since the cameras were all over it. In actuality I jammed it, mainly because if he's bluffing I couldn't imagine him rebuffing me if I clicked it back.. And if he's value raising, I obviously want to maximize my value. Additionally, if I reraise to, say 950k or 1M, I don't think there's much of a difference in his calling frequency in his mind because he had a pretty big stack (3M at the time) so I thought he was either gonna call or fold.

Fwiw I learned afterwards that he had a set of tens. Thoughts on his play?

I think it's a click back to 950-ish. The bluffs have to be over after you 3bet the river. Neither of you should have any bluffs left in your range, and both of you should know that. Bombing it would probably increase the chance that he makes a correct fold. He should be unlikely to call a click back raise also, but there's a slightly better chance he might misclick call or something imo :)

i personally might raise the river a little smaller and you might induce a bluff raise with him trying to rep AK (esp from a plo player).

i think since your river 4 bet range is so AK heavy (he surely knows this) you might as well give him really good pot odds to make a crying call. gl in day 6.

I think his range here is only 98, K9 and AK. Although I think re-raising then calling it off with 98 here would be very optimistic on his part, he might very well have eliminated AK and K9 from your perceived range, although people play so nitty deep into the ME that I think AK is very much in anybody's range.

I'd click it back to 1M-ish because there's a remote chance he calls with worse/spazzes out, but I guess the EV is almost the same as shoving since you will see AK here 95%+ of the time.

oh one key point about hand 4 is that we can't just go bigger because theres a point where we lose an insurmountable amount of value to the flushes in his range.

hand 1: I'm thinking checkraising here is good on the turn, you can fold to a 3bet also. Plan would be to bet fold rivers. If you do check call I think leading river is ok.

hand 2: check raise larger, I think he is calling a mostly inelastic range so you get more by making it bigger.

hand 3: I think I'd call, don't really want to have to raise fold here a turn raise I think would need to be followed up by a big river barrel in a lot of cases if you did decide to do that.

hand 4: buttons range looks somewhat capped. I think checking isn't good because there's a significant part of his range that's not flushes and I think if you check he gets to bet all of those and put you in a shitty spot. Unless you have a great read on how often he bluffs the river when you check you probably have to check fold.

I'd bet smallish to target his Jx hands and set the price vs small flushes. Would definitely be folding to a raise as I think his raising range is almost entirely flushes. Note that when many live players raise river it's super polarized, but in this case he has very little air that gets there so his river range for raising is super nutted.

Hand 1:

Calling turn then leading river does seem to work best against the weaker part of his range, since if a donk raised flop with a strong Ax, he might fold to the turn x/r but wont fold to the river donk but I don't like that line for a bunch of reasons:

a) I don't think he has a one pair hand that often, compared to sets and 2p, against which x/r turn is by far the most profitable play since he may just be unable to let go A3/A7/77/33, especially if you only go half pot-ish, or maybe less, on the river.

b) A diamond can come, meaning you can't value bet river and miss value from his strong made hands.

Hand 2, you played fine although I might lead flop anyways.

Hand 3, if you want to reduce variance due to the BI/softness of the field/etc., then call I guess, but I think the most +EV line (and what I would do) is to take the fast lane, raise turn and ship river since his small turn donk just screams weakness. I mean, how often is he calling down with less than a Q?

Hand 4 is tricky. I would probably bet 16k or maybe smaller, angrily fold to a shove and then tilt. I don't think checking is that great since he's checking back river alot on this scary of a card, hell some fish check back KJ here. Also betting more than 20k doesn't make much sense since he's just going to fold all one pair hands, and sets/2p I'd expect to raise at some point. Once you bet, definitely fold to any raise though.

Now that I think about, you could bet big-ish since you're mostly targeting the part of his range your coolering (AJ and KJ).

Seems like a spot where you value cut yourself a lot or he folds worse.

Besides AT, T7, I don't see much that you can beat that might call, while he has a huge amount of Kx hands that will just snap off, as well as slowplayed boats/things that turned into boats.

I would probably bet for thin value, planning to bet fold. You shouldn't have any perceived fold equity (he shouldn't think you would fold) so it should be an easy fold if he ships.

@molotok - i personally don't take offense to it. if someone wants to run it once or twice doesn't make a difference to me; it is there preference, although many players (typically recreational ones) get angry when you run it twice on one occasion and then once on another. personally though, i would prefer to only run it once against the fishies (unless it's a very big pot). if you have the chance to bust the fish at the table, you should typically take it, especially in the live arena where there are much fewer hands, and the opportunity to play for stacks against a fish doesn't present itself nearly as much.

@schweig/shuttle - definitely agree with both of your points. if you can gain a metagame advantage doing anything, it's worth it imo obv

I think I pretty much always run it twice in big pots, I think the variance reduction is worth more than the image related benefits to me as I tilt pretty easy all things considered. I fell like if you are deep rolled and don't tilt easy then maybe running it once is better if there a metagame benefit to be had from it, but like running it once increases your risk of ruin which sucks.

I really wouldn't know about this. There's nothing inherently wrong with this - it's your choice.

People react strangely to certain things though and you often have to be a pragmatist about it. If it creates an unfriendly atmosphere that is detrimental, then you probably shouldn't.

I will add that running it once is good if you will tilt a lot less than your opponent does from losing a big pot.

"It makes players reluctant to play a big pot against you without the nuts, because they know they only have one shot at scooping it." And also they will worry that you have no fear. If you run it twice you will seem slightly more variance averse and big plays can work more often.

Great post, John. Do you ever differ the amount you buy in for ? Like if you have a bad seat in relation to fish/good reg. Do you run it more than once? Do you try to play more hands because you don't get many of them per hour or fewer because it's full ring. Do you open-limp?
Do you ever shortstack?
Thank you

The action is no longer at Venetian, it moved to Aria. They have been getting1/3 and 2/5, with 5/10 running a few times a week along with the occasional 25/50 or 50/100 PLO game. I've seen as many as 4 PLO games running at the same time, its pretty impressive.

I would say he fixed one of the more annoying features in poker videos, the lack of organization. There is nothing more annoying than sitting through an hour long video and not knowing whether you're going to be able to take something out of it.

also, Quickpro teaches the mindset needed to beat games. It's not just a PLO video series.

When Hastings cc flop vs Galfond with the bare wrap and bet flush turn (I guess if he is going to cc such a weak hand he'll have to bluff some turns) and then the board paired on the river. Hastings couldn't rep a boat since he wouldn't cc flop/lead turn with any sets or 2p type hands, so I guess with a river bet he would only rep the nut flush going for thin value which Galfond could easily exploit, or Galfond could have a medium flush or boat himself, so Hastings gave up.

Haha, definitely have to dumb it down for the NL guys that don't play or watch very much PLO. Overall though I really enjoyed episode 1. It's amazing to see just how loose everyone is playing, and in the non-straddled pots everyone seems to be playing pretty passively. You can also tell that Hastings is more uncomfortable live than the other 5 players. What'd you think the most interesting hand was?

you are such a talented and good writer man!
with every line I got more motivated to make the next year the best one in my poker career and that I have all the skills it takes to move up and establish myself there.
It costs quite a bit of force to get myself out of the confort zone (which are the lower stakes) but I know that it'll be worth it to take a shot.
Also really great because I know you and Thyson a lil bit better and know that a) everything you write you experienced it and b) that there's even more behind.

Really waiting for the next blogg-entry because while reading I asked myself: I wonder what would be the best and most efficient way to spot my leaks and work on them.

Really impressed and inspired by you John!
Thank you so much for everything you teached me and shared with me so far!!!

In the first HH, when the action on the flop goes 1/3 C-Bet by you, Raise (effectively) AI, call AI then to you:
are you hoping for a set vs set vs flush situation or did you figure that with the money in the pot you can never really be that far behind?

Pretty good answers everybody, but I think Omahahaha has the best answer! Ship me your sn on Stars or FTP and I'll ship you the monies!

Ya, 3b'ing smaller works well against maniacs who 4b and always pot flops (3b size of 7-8bb instead of full pot means he can really only 4b to 25bb instead of 35bb, and generally when people 4b they pot any flop, so you're essentially getting the same implied odds but for a cheaper price).

3 betting smaller than P v.s. very tight players PF who never 4 bet light (e.g. usually only AAxx hands) and therefore have a very polarized range, v.s. players who play straight forwardly in a 3 bet pots and also v.s. anyone who is out of position :-)Because its easy to play correctly against these types of players Post flop, you can more easily avoid making big mistakes, often provided with excellent implied odds and they can provide excellent stealing opportunities as well. Generally all round +EV

good to see that you're running good,
I assume that 3betting small IP works best vs players that 4bet only with AA and are also playing poor postflop (basically potting any board in 4bet pots).

In the JJ55ds hand, would you fold the river if you would have been deeper with Villain so that he would have bet like a 3/4PS bet or so?

Hand 4 I think is the closest. At this point we know he's potting when he's "strong". Thing is his strength is like naked Axxx, but also higher fd's with pairs and gutters and stuff.

Are we betting a spade if checks to us on the river? If he doesn't have a spade I don't know if we get paid when we hit those outs and it could totally be rio for us when he barrels a spade.

On the other hand he is barrelling all A+ gutters, probably even all Axxx hands, and maybe even J+ gutters.

So on the turn when we pick up more outs it's kinda gross. I mean if we have to make one of our hands to win the pot and half of those outs are counterfeited some percentage of the time and other times he just c/f spades, turn might be a fold.

Hand 5 is close because we know when he pots it he's more inclined to continue, can't blame you for trying though.

I hear you on learning how play maniacs deep, or deep in general. It's just going to be hugely +ev. I mean who doesn't want to win an epic pot?

What do you think about the other guys at that table, or the adjustments a lot of people make in these situations, where they pretty much just nit it up and wait to let the maniac shovel them chips?

On #7, I continue to bet/get it in on the cards you said. Checking would be a nightmare because I don't want him to realize his equity, and there's too much money to give up on now so I'd just bet and get it in on the turn. If I didn't make my hand on the turn I probably would've bet bigger, but so it goes.

The second hand my reasoning was to get him to define his hand and to build a pot on later streets. And ya, what you said about getting a cheap turn is true as well.

On hand 7, what do you do if the turn is a blank? a queen? ten?

on hand 4, I like the small donk. What's your reasoning? Does it give you a cheap turn as he can't really raise with anything that's in his range except nut flush draw?

What's up ceegee? Thanks for checking out the blog, when're you heading out to LV? In regards to how much it costs to go out, it honestly just depends on where you go and who you're with. If you get a table, most clubs will waive your cover as long as you buy two bottles up front (depending on the alcohol you get, that's anywhere from 300-500 bucks per bottle). In the past I've had some very expensive nights, but since I moved here I've been fortunate enough to get hooked up pretty well, so many times I don't pay anything, but sometimes I'll pay like 100 or 200 bucks (depends who I'm with). Shoot me a PM and I'll see what I can do for you and your friends when you come out.

Cool. I think I originally didn't realize the AAK5 hand was 4b pre (I thought it was just 3b). Makes sense and I agree to get it in. As for the QT87 hand...I guess I learned something new! I would have expected you to be kind of in bad shape against a large range of hands but it turns out you're a slight favorite against pair+fd and only a slight dog to an overpair+fd. I guess unlucky he flopped bottom set in a 3b pot. Thanks for the clarification!

What's up LS?
Thanks for checking out the blog. Yep, your assumptions about the AKJ3 hand are right! I don't think I can b/f the AAK5 hand because it's a 4b pot, and there's a ton of combo draws that he can c/r with that I have enough equity against to stack off. QT87 hand is an easy b/c for similar reasons because it's a 3b pot, and he can be c/r with draws I have enough equity against to get it in. Please check out Haze next time you're here, it's sick!

that one KJ3A hand where you turn the flush I really like your line. I assume you're jamming the river because you think he will call with a worse flush given that he is likely to jam the turn with the nut flush?

What's your reasoning behind the jams with the A5KA and 8T7Q hands? Does not compute because I would expect you to bet/fold both of those. I must be doing it wrong :(

Anyway definitely going to have to check out Haze next time in Vegas now...

Yo Steve -

Thanks for the comments about the articles! In the hand, as always it depends on what he thinks of my 3b'ing range, but I don't think it can be toooo bad if I'm ever b/f'ing.. Since he's not dead that often, and if I did have AA** with no redraws it'd be a pretty tricky spot, and imo anytime you can put someone in a difficult spot with the top of their range (which besides flopping trips, AA** basically is) you're probably doing something right.

I've been making these calls a lot lately. It's like "are you serious? do you really have the exact hand you are repping right now? fuck it, I call!" not a good idea for sure. Also I was going to say something about those Shallow tables. Fish for sure love them and it's not like the Cap where the fish can only get in 40bbs, here they can run up a stack and then you can really take advantage of them. Also the decisions become incredibly straight forward. Some really cool hands here.

Hahah, wtf... It cut off my post early! There's actually a ton more hands I posted but for some reason they didn't get put up.. Oh well.

Hi Kaido, thanks for checking out the blog. I decided to 3b the flop mainly because I wasn't worried about him having a set (not many 22**, 55** or JJ** hands in a limping range, plus I have blockers), thought he could potentially make a bad fold with a hand like he had, or fold top two or something. And it's not like my hand is monstrous anyway, so I just want to get the money in on the flop and not make a mistake on the turn.

Haha, sup dude? I know... I caved and played a tourney. I went kinda deep; was a little disappointed I didn't go further than I did because I think I messed up my last match. There were 1024 people and I finished like 30 something I think for eight hundred something. The players were pretty bad though; I wish they ran more HU PLO tourneys like that!

1. Learn a bunch, put in a ton of effort towards improving your game.
2. Grind a bunch and pad the roll using my brand spankin’ new lines
3. Contract Cocky Spewy Syndrome (winners tilt) and give a ton of it back because, after all, spewing is way more fun than playing good right? Too bad it’s not as profitable.
4. Use my internal frustration and dissatisfaction with my effort as motivation for working on and improving until I’m playing A game again.
5. Repeat

Ya man, they have a Badminton League out here in Vegas that I'm going to get in to. It's super fun; doubles gets really intense too. It's funny because everyone thinks it's just a recreational game but there's this subculture of people who take it very seriously.. Like me! Hahahaha. Hope all is well man..
Hi Z and L-Straddle -

Thanks for checking out the blog! In regards to the hand y'all are talking about, my only issue with c/r'ing is that he really shouldn't and probably doesn't barrel that turn lightly given what my c/c'ing range is on boards like that. Given that my c/c'ing range on the flop is almost always a draw, that turn is pretty terrible for him if he has 2pr+, so I would expect him to check back his made hands that are looking to get to showdown more often than b/f'ing them. I can definitely see arguments for leading though too. The main goal is to always take the line that reps the widest range of hands, and imo leading would be pretty deceptive, but if he's really aggro then c/r'ing might be better.. Esp if he's ever going to b/f, since it would suck if he potted the turn and was committed with something that hurt our hand, like NFD or something.

What stakes were you guys playing in that "friendly" home game? If you're playing lower than 10/20 (which is the other guys' regular games) those are actually pretty cheap lessons if you think about it!

Hand 2 i like the c/r better than the lead also cuz you can knock out a lot of one way draws I think and the river will be a bit easier to play than if you just lead

going to the X games = sick brag

Thanks for checking out the blog! I did in fact get the 15 inch MacbookPro. I just bought vmware fusion tonight, because it seems that all the poker products I need don't run on a Mac, so my only option was to do this. Hopefully it isn't hard to get all set up. Sweet!

Hey rorschach -

I think his donk is fine against a wide variety of players, but anyone who's aware will understand that if he flopped 2pr+, most players (especially at the lower limits) will have a high likelihood to c/r rather than donk out with it, ,so I wasn't concerned about being crushed. Another example of this is when it's a single raised pot, and you get called out of the blinds by a 40-50bb stack, and he donks pot on a 882dd board or something. It's pretty easy to realize that much more often than not he won't do that with a big hand, but the majority of time in those situations I've seen them show up with a dry overpair or something that's looking to protect against the flush.

Here, I expected him to show up with random weak/medium draws a lot of the time. Also fwiw, his hand is terrible to 3b HU imo. His hand covers only about 10% of flops, and we had an aggressive dynamic up to that point, so he wouldn't have much FE postflop either. In most situations he'd just get owned, but so it goes.

Nice post John. I can definitely relate to some of the points you bring up.

I have pretty bad discipline and I'm sure that playing when bored/on tilt/etc is one of the reasons why I'm not doing too well right now. I've started to play shorter sessions and have just accepted that I'm not capable of playing my A-game for 3-4 hours straight. So far, it's allowed me to focus on the game during my entire sessions. Usually I get bored after 1h30-2h of 4-tabling and start browsing or doing random stuff whilst playing (one of the downsides of having 2 monitors I suppose).

In the "vul I guess" hand, do you think that his donk on the flop is a good play? It's HU so it's probably dependent on the dynamics of the match, but I was just wondering.

Hey Nikker -

Thanks for checking out the blog! In the "Tilt Call" hand, I bet smaller on the turn because of the awkward stack sizes. If I bet bigger, he will have barely any money left in proportion to the pot on the river, and he may be more likely to make a crying call if I push all in and his stack is only a small percentage of the pot, whereas if he has more money on the river he might be able to fold since it costs him more to call. It's a pretty common strategy of mine to leverage my whole stack on the turn with a smaller bet, because I'm basically using the threat of future bets to gain more fold equity. In addition, given my assessment of his flop calling range as SD's and K***, I can b/f smaller on the turn as well (if he does in fact have a straight), because he's either going to c/r me with a straight, or c/c with almost certainly K***, in which case I'm shipping most non - broadway rivers in an effort to move him off of his hand.

I honestly do believe the yummy hand is standard. Consider the player type and the bet size for a moment. Most weaker players click the half pot button when they don't have strong hands, and in my opinion, if he had a stronger range (pair + NFD, top two, set) he would probably be looking to bet pot, rather than only half potting it. Based on his buy in amount, and my observation of him being a weaker player, I figured as long as my FD is good (which it basically is always since it folded back to me), I have at least 40% equity in the hand, and with the dead money out there, even if he calls me it's going to be profitable, but I do think it's possible he folds 15-20% of the time. Either way, it's profitable in the long run, which is the important thing :).

Nice blog! ill begin reading it..
I agree in pretty much everything you say, a couple of comments though:

In the "Tilt Call", I agree in the second barrel but shouldnt your betsize be like 70-80ish instead of half pot, so he doesnt feel prized in with Kxxx?

And in the Yummy hand, is it standard? know you have snfd+kk but how much FE du you have on a 50bb stack who leads out multiway? probably just me.. im such a nit

Depends on what the actual card is again, but I'm still betting the majority of cards for a couple of different reasons. First, like I said, his range is so wide both pre flop and post flop that I think he can be calling me with any pair and any draw, and if this is true, the river will many times make him many garbage two pairs that will call a small value bet on the river.

With the pot at 144, I'd bet 45-55'ish I think, which seems kind of funky because it's so small, but remember the bigger you bet, the more you narrow the opponents calling range, and here I'm mostly trying to widen it, or not value own myself if he does show up with a flush or rivered straight because he's calling anyway. It's important to note that he pretty much never raises me with the top of his range here, which is good for us and really lets us control the hand, particularly OOP. It's also important to note that you could basically never play this way against a competent player, but he was really passive and predictable so even OOP you can really own him.

Also fwiw I can see checking being fine, but I think even though it's really thin, there's still value to be had on the river here. It'd certainly be close though.

John, sorry to hear you're riding the bad side of variance. I definitely agree with devoting more time to studying and improving.

I wanted to ask on the first hand where you bet 1/2 pot on the turn when the flush comes and get called, what's your general plan for the river if the board doesn't pair?

Nice post John! Sometimes it takes rambling to get to the truth, or something.
This:
"At night you can stand on the beach and very clearly see the city lights on the coast of Africa, which makes you get that eerie feeling like.. Wow… I’m so far away from home right now," this made me want to travel again more than anything I've read in long time, goose bumps.
I agree with a ton of things you talk about in this post, though I haven't met too many Euro girls so I'll have to take your word on that, for now.;)
I got the P90x like a year ago...*insert cricket noises here*...yep. I'm seriously intent on getting started on it though but I'll save that for my own blog.
Thanks for the blog links and hope you had a blast. Hit me up when your ready to do some coaching.

2four, what's up man? I'm working on getting a more permanent blog atm, but this is all I've got right now. I'm kind of a blog fish, and haven't really figured out how to post pictures yet, but I'll definitely try to figure it out once I get the pics from my camera uploaded so you can check out some of the shit I've been doing. It's been pretty dope so far.

Haha, about the topic of Euro girls > USA girls.. Ya man, I'm glad we can agree on something. I don't think we're the only ones either... Seems to be quite the trend from American dudes who meet girls over here... You kind of start to realize that American girls suck!

I can definitely hook you up with some coaching, this fall. Send me a PM when you're ready and we can start working things out. I'll need to send you some resources and a questionairre to fill out before we get started. Dope!

GL,
